This document outlines a 5-minute speaking activity called Think-Pair-Share that the teacher wants to use in future lessons. The activity will have students: 1) Think individually about whether small or large towns are better places to live; 2) Pair up to discuss their ideas; and 3) Share their thoughts with the class. The goal is to make students more comfortable speaking, encourage social interaction and participation, support different ability levels, and improve speaking and listening skills. The teacher will observe students during the activity and provide feedback to improve use of questions, answers, explanations, and vocabulary.

At my future lessons, I want to use Think-Pair-Share activity, a collaborative learning strategy. At the end of this activity, the students will be able: - to ask/answer questions on the topic “Small towns are better places to live than big ones”; - to use relevant vocabulary while describing the advantages and disadvantages of small and big towns; - to present his/her ideas with classmates in 2-3 minutes. The aim of this activity is to give the students the opportunity to feel more comfortable sharing their thoughts; to motivate learners by providing social interaction and the opportunity to be active; to supports students at different levels; to improve students' speaking and listening skills. The steps of the activity: 1. Think: The teacher poses a statement “Small towns are better places to live than big ones” and instructs students to think about their ideas or responses for about 1 minute. 2. Pair: The teacher pairs students randomly and gives pairs approximately 2-3 minutes to discuss their ideas or responses. 3. Share: Students stop talking and return their attention to the teacher and whole group. Then the pairs are given the opportunity to briefly share their ideas with the rest of class. The teacher can circulate and listen to the way students ask each other questions and answer them. The teachers can take notes in order to correct the common mistakes he/she noticed while walking around the room or while students. While observing thinking through students’ explanations and dialog the teacher may also make sure all students are participating in discussions. The teacher may also ask the students to comment on each other’s responses and argue and support their claims with evidence using relevant vocabulary. This will also help the teacher to compare class discussion before and after the use of think-pair- share.
