Safety Information
To the User of This Manual
The user of this manual is directed to read and carefully review the instructions, warnings and cautions contained herein prior to beginning installation or service
activities. While you may have previously installed or serviced equipment similar to that described in this manual, changes in design, manufacture or procedure may have
occurred which significantly affect the present installation or service.

Installation and Environment

Except for installations requiring certification by the manufacturer per federal standards, see that a radiation protection survey is made by a qualified expert in
accordance with NCRP 102, section 7, as revised or replaced in the future. Perform a survey after every change in equipment, workload, or operating conditions which
might significantly increase the probability of persons receiving more than the maximum permissible dose equivalent.

Diagnostic Imaging Systems - Mechanical-electrical Warning

All of the moveable assemblies and parts of this equipment should be operated with care and routinely inspected in accordance with the manufacturer’s
recommendations contained in the equipment manuals.
Only properly trained and qualified personnel should be permitted access to any internal parts. Live electrical terminals are deadly; be sure line disconnects are opened
and other appropriate precautions are taken before opening access doors, removing enclosure panels, or attaching accessories.
Do not under any circumstances, remove the flexible high tension cables from the x-ray tube housing or high tension generator and/ or the access covers from the
generator until the main and auxiliary power supplies have been disconnected. Failure to comply with the above may result in serious or fatal bodily injuries to the
operator or those in the area.

Electrical-grounding Instructions
The equipment must be grounded to an earth ground by a separate conductor. The neutral side of the line is not to be considered the earth ground. On equipment
provided with a line cord, the equipment must be connected to properly grounded, three-pin receptacle. Do not use a three-to-two pin adapter.

Diagnostic Imaging Systems - Radiation Warning

X-ray and Gamma-rays are dangerous to both operator and others in the vicinity unless established safe exposure procedures are strictly observed.
The useful and scattered beams can produce serious or fatal bodily injuries to any persons in the surrounding area if used by an unskilled operator. Adequate precautions
must always be taken to avoid exposure to the useful beam, as well as to leakage radiation from within the source housing or to scattered radiation resulting from the
passage of radiation through matter.
Those authorized to operate, participate in or supervise the operation of the equipment must be thoroughly familiar and comply completely with the current established
safe exposure factors and procedures described in publications, such as: Subchapter J of Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations, "Diagnostic X-ray Systems and
Their Major Components", and the national council on radiation protection (NCRP) no. 102, "Medical X-ray And Gamma-ray Protection For Energies Up To 10
Mevequipment Design and Use", as revised or replaced in the future.
Those responsible for planning of x-ray and gamma-ray equipment installations must be thoroughly familiar and comply completely with NCRP no. 49, “Structural
Shielding Design and Evaluation For Medical Of X-rays and Gamma-rays of E nergies Up to 10 Mev”, as revised and replaced in the future. Failure to observe these
warnings may cause serious or fatal bodily injuries to the operator or those in the area.

GEMINI GXL Installation Technical Manual
Introduction

Introduction
This manual contains the procedure for properly installing the components of the GEMINI System in both Fixed,
Mobile and Fixed Mobile Sites. The GEMINI System is a hybrid PET/CT System, capable of performing sequential
PET and CT studies on a patient. The integral patient table can keep the patient relatively motion free, and
images obtained in this manner may later be viewed as multi-modality images with both anatomical and functional
information overlaid. A drive and alignment system referred to as the Gantry Separation Unit, or GSU, allows the
PET portion of GEMINI to move rearward enabling unobstructed CT imaging and improved patient comfort.

It is recommended that you read through the entire manual once before performing any work to familiarize
yourself with the procedures as they are described.

General Information
Prior to moving any system components or beginning any service work, it is important that you are aware of the
specific installation requirements of your facility. Each Fixed Site installation must be performed in accordance with
the Site Planning Guide, and conditional items will vary from one site to another. The installation for Mobile
Sites (Fixed location or trailer) will have a few variances which are described in this manual. Review the
following and determine which of the conditions may apply to your specific installation. This will help you follow the
procedure presented in this manual, and ensure that you can perform the installation in a timely and efficient
manner.
• Discuss any special instructions or requests made by the Facility Administrators with the local Philips Service
Specialist.
• Identify and retrieve any additional equipment that will be required prior to beginning the installation procedure.
• Determine the minimum vertical clearance of the ceilings and door ways. You may have to remove the top
cover set from the gantries before moving them in order to gain additional clearance.
• Evaluate how much working space you will have in the room where the GEMINI system is to be installed. This is
very important and will affect the installation procedure order of operations. For example: in some rooms, if the
patient table is installed before the CT gantry is brought into the room, there may not be enough clearance
around the table for the CT gantry to be positioned. As a result, some installations may need to have all
equipment placed in them first.
• Survey the room floor for levelness. This is critical for proper operation of the GEMINI system. Floor levelness
shall not exceed 1/2” (13 mm) when measured between any two peripheral points within the area of installation.
It is the customer’s responsibility to correct the floor if the results of the floor measurements do not meet these
specifications.
• Ensure that the floor will carry the system loads. Extra soft floor coverings may cause the settling of the system,
resulting in a change to the gantry alignments.
• Due to the weight of the GEMINI gantries it is recommended that they be positioned in the room before leveling
the GSU and patient couch. This will prevent errors caused by floor deflection from affecting the installation.

Radiation Safety
Radioactive Sources
The GEMINI system requires seven radioactive calibration sources:
• Six Na-22 quality control and calibration sources. These sources supersede the Germanium line source
(SOURCE-GE-0.5) shipped with earlier scanners. Sodium has a longer half-life than Germanium, and
should therefore only require replacement every 2 years.
• One Na-22 quality control and calibration source.
For domestic shipments, the sources are drop-shipped from the source vendor: Isotope Products Laboratories
(IPL). For export, the sources must be purchased separately from IPL’s local distributor. Ordering information is
provided at the time of sale.

Applicable Regulations
Radiation safety considerations in the design of the GEMINI are driven by US Nuclear Regulatory Commission
(NRC) rules. The NRC specifies that the maximum annual dose of radiation permitted for workers in the United
States is 5000 mrem per year (NRC Title 10 Part 20 (1-1-95)). This corresponds to an average dose of
approximately 2.5 mrem/hour. For gamma radiation, 1 mrem=1 mR=1 mrad=10 USv.
The National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurement (NCRP) recommends the adoption of “ALARA: As
Low As Reasonably Achievable” as the operating policy of radiation safety programs. The NCRP specifies that the
maximum acceptable level of emitted radiation from a medical device with its source in a stowed (non-scanning)
condition is 200 mrad/hr at 5 cm and 2 mrad/hr at 1 m (NCRP Report no. 102 “Medical Equipment Design,
Performance and Use”).

Radiation Considerations
The isotopes used in the GEMINI emit a higher radiation than the isotopes used in a single photon imaging; 511
keV vs. 140 keV for Tc-99m. This means that special care must be taken in the layout of the PET suite.
The GEMINI exam room should be close to the radiopharmaceutical dispensing area and a patient waiting area.
The patient waiting area is a room where the patient can wait during the uptake period, i.e. after the activity has
been injected. These three areas should be a reasonable distance from offices and Nuclear Medicine scanning
rooms.
Customers should consult a Radiation Safety Person (RSP) to determine proper safety requirements.
Patient Dose
In a PET study, the patient is exposed to radiation:
• Internal exposure from the injected dose of a radiopharmaceutical
In keeping with the principle of ALARA, minimizing the dose administered to the patient was an important
consideration in the design of the GEMINI system. This has been accomplished by reducing the injected dose.

Unpacking and Transporting System Components

Unpacking and Transporting System Components

The physical offloading, unpacking, and transport of the system from receiving area to scan room is the
responsibility of a third-party company contracted to perform these specific duties. However, the lead FSE should
be present to supervise these activities and ensure that the system components are handled properly. For your
reference, some useful information is included below.
• Determine whether or not the top covers will have to be removed from the PET gantry. Both gantries of the
GEMINI system require a minimum 48” (1220 mm) door opening to pass straight through the doorway. Overall
system height is 81.5” (2060 mm) with the covers on and the CT baseplate lifted 1 3/4” (45 mm) off the floor.
Passage under a standard 80” (2030 mm) door requires that the top covers be removed. Refer to the GEMINI
Field Replaceable Parts Technical Manual (P/N 4535 671 38821) for further information on cover set
removal and replacement. Should it be necessary to remove the top covers, a step ladder may be needed.
• Depending on the site specific installation details and instructions, it may be required that masonite or similar
material in the path of the gantry be laid out to protect the facility floors from damage. Refer to the GEMINI GXL
Site Planning Guide for further information.
• Crating panels, plastic wrapping, cardboard, and foam should be removed from the equipment and set aside or
discarded. This is also the responsibility of the third-party contractor.

Personnel Required Time Required

2 Field Service Engineers 6 Hours (3 Lead and 3 Assistant)

Overview
Mylar and ethafoam floor templates are provided to designate the GSU and patient table locations within the room.
In addition to providing positioning information, the templates provide an area in which the Micorox compound can
be poured into once the GSU and Patient Table have been leveled. Refer to the GEMINI Site Planning Guide for
more information and then complete the following procedure to prepare the for more information and then complete
the following procedure to prepare the floor templates. It is important to note that some room sizes will require all of
the equipment (both gantries, patient table, etc.) to be in the room before laying out and preparing the floor
template. Before securing the templates to the floor, verify that will be sufficient clearance to bring the equipment
into the room without obstruction.
Bare concrete is always preferable to any type of floor covering, as soft floor coverings such as linoleum tile can
take weeks to settle under the weight of the gantries. This will make it very difficult to level and align the system. If
you are installing over a soft floor covering, it is recommended that you return and re-align the system after 30
days.

Ethafoam
Strips

CAUTION Failure to properly cover the ethafoam with petroleum jelly where indicated will cause the foam to
bond to the leveling compound. The foam will be extremely difficult to remove and will be visually
unappealing.
In the image shown, the horizontal arrows indicate the inside edges of the foam, and the vertical arrows indicate
the top of the foam. The petroleum jelly will prevent the leveling compound from sticking to the foam wherever it is
applied. This allows the foam to be removed once the leveling compound has cured.
NOTE A small amount of petroleum jelly applied to each of the foam seams will help reduce the potential
for leaks.
2 Cut-out the leveling screw holes from the patient table floor template.
This will prevent the leveling screws from tearing the mylar.
3 Tape the edges of the leveling screw cut-outs to the floor.
This will prevent the epoxy from leaking past the template and onto the floor.

Gantry Separation Unit Leveling

Personnel Required Time Required

1 Field Service Engineers 2 Hours

Overview
In the following steps, you will position the GSU relative to the floor template and then level it prior to installation.
However, to ensure accuracy, the site floor must pre-loaded with the weight of the CT and PET gantries placed
roughly in their installed position before any adjustments are made to the leveling screws. When leveling the
GSU, the Patient Table must be set to the same height as the GSU. Due to floor irregularities, the GSU may have
to be placed higher or lower to achieve the proper alignment with the Patient Table.

Leveling the Gantry Separation Unit

PROCEDURE

1 Roll the GSU unit into the work area.

a Remove any packing and/or shipping material from the separation unit.
b Position the GSU alongside the GSU floor template.
2 Inspect the GSU baseplate.
a Verify that adhesive backed mylar has been installed GSU
on the bottom of the GSU.
b Verify that the mylar has been cut out of the viewing
holes.
Spot Faced Non-Spot
c Trim away the mylar from the viewing holes if necessary. Anchor Hole Faced Viewing
The viewing holes are the holes along the sides of the GSU (Mylar Not Cut Hole (Mylar Cut
baseplate that do not have the spot face. (The spot faced holes Out Here) Out Here)
are the anchor holes.) The leveling compound must be able to
rise to the top of the leveling holes.

CAUTION Ensure that both the GSU baseplate and Micorox compound are at room temperature before pouring.
Failure to do so may compromise the leveling procedure. Additionally, the GSU could become warped as
a result of the excessive temperature differential.
3 Coat the leveling screw threads with petroleum jelly prior to installing the GSU.
a Remove the three leveling screws from the GSU if not already done.
b Apply petroleum jelly to the entire length of the screw threads. Re-install the leveling screws into the GSU,
but do not allow them to extend below the bottom of the GSU.
This will ensure that the screws can be removed once the leveling compound has cured.

6 Lower the GSU onto the floor template. GSU In Position

a Lower the three leveling screws so that the
weight of the GSU is supported by the screws and
not the transporter wheels.
b Remove the shipping support braces.
c Remove the transporter wheels.
d Raise the leveling screws evenly to lower the
GSU until it rests completely on the inner foam
strips.

CAUTION Ensure that the GSU compresses both of the foam strips located in the center of the floor template. If
the separation unit does not make contact with and compress the center strips, a leak will occur when
the leveling epoxy is poured.
7 Position the PET gantry over the GSU.
a Raise the PET gantry casters to the maximum height.
b Position the PET gantry over the GSU at a point approximating the middle range of the GSU travel.
(See Figure 10 for more detail.)
Prior to leveling the GSU it is recommended that both the PET and CT gantries are located in their installed
positions relative to the GSU and the Patient Table. This is critical as the site floor must be preloaded to
maximum deflection prior to leveling the system components.

CAUTION Failure to locate the PET and CT gantries in their installed positions relative to the GSU and the Patient
Table may result in an installation that does not allow the Patient Table to be properly calibrated.
8 Position the CT gantry between the GSU and the Patient Table.
• Roll the CT gantry into position between the GSU and the Patient Table. (See Figure 10 for more detail.)

CAUTION Ensure that the gantries are as close to their installed positions as possible before performing any
leveling adjustments. If the site floor is not preloaded with the weight of the gantries before the
GSU and Patient Table are leveled, the system alignment will not be accurate.

Figure 10: PET & CT Gantries Placed Into Position: Floor Preloaded

9 Level the GSU in the X-axis.

Precision Level
a Place the precision level across the X-axis, or width, of the PET
mounting plate.
b Note and mark the location of the level so that future
measurements may be made from the exact same location.
The goal is to level the GSU to the same height as the Patient Table
while keeping it as low to the ground as possible. The leveling
X-Axis
compound requires a 1/4” minimum pour thickness, and the
compressed thickness of the center foam strips ensures that this is
met. A gap between the bottom of the GSU and foam strips will result
in a leak when pouring the leveling compound. Therefore, the leveling
must be accomplished without the presence of a gap.
c Tighten the corresponding leveling screw(s) in one-quarter turn
increments until the plate is level across the width of the PET
mounting plate.

Center Marks
NOTE Any adjustment of the leveling screw(s) that results in no movement of the precision level bubble indicates that the
leveling screws are not in contact with the floor.
NOTE
The axis is considered level when the bubble reads ±2 divisions from centered on the scale. Note that the scale has
the center position accentuated, and the bubble can be off two divisions in either direction.

b Repeat step 10, if necessary.

The level must be placed in the same location as it was previously measured for a consistent reading. It is
possible that the Y-axis leveling may have altered your initial adjustments.

NOTE If it is necessary to make multiple adjustments with the leveling screws, be aware of the height of the
separation unit in relation to the floor template foam. If you raise the separation unit too high in the attempt to
level it, you may create a gap between the bottom of the unit and the foam which will allow the leveling
compound to leak out.

Overview
In the following steps, you will position the Patient Table and then level it prior to installation. The Patient Table
and the GSU must be set to the same plane. The Patient Table Alignment Fixture will be used to help accomplish
this.
The Patient Table Alignment Fixture offers no automatic left /right positioning reference. Any left/right centering
must use the centerline scribed onto the floor for reference. Use the access holes in the fixture for viewing the
centerline. The fixture ensures proper critical spacing between the gantry and the table and also allows the

Pouring the Micorox Compound-GSU

Overview
The following steps outline the procedure for mixing and pouring the Micorox compound. The Micorox is a self-
leveling two-component epoxy compound used to fill the volume between the floor and the leveled GSU. You will
be required to work against the cure time of the Micorox compound and as such, must make certain you are ready
to use it and will be able to work continuously without interruption. Exercise caution when mixing and pouring the
compound to prevent splashing, as damage to the floor, walls, and cabinets may occur. Wear disposable gloves at
all times and follow the manufacturer's specific instructions for cleaning and skin contact should that occur. Once
the Micorox compound has fully cured, the GSU can be anchored to the site floor.

20 Mix the two components of the floor pour epoxy, one pail at a time.

Mixing the Epoxy Base and Hardener

NOTE The epoxy base and hardener must be at room temperature prior to use.
a Place one 15 lb. (6.8 kg) pail of epoxy base on a piece of heavy cardboard or similar protection.
b Install the mixing paddle in the drill chuck.
Each side of the GSU will require approximately one pail of the Micorox compound. However, for ease of pouring,
it is recommended that only one pail be mixed at a time.

CAUTION Do not mix the epoxy while the pail is sitting directly on the floor. When the two components of
the epoxy are mixed, an exothermic reaction occurs which will heat the metal pail and may
damage the floor of the facility. Place a piece of cardboard or similar material under the pail to
protect the floor.
c Put on a pair of latex gloves and remove the lids from one pail of epoxy base and one container of
hardener.

e Insert the mixing paddle and blend for a minimum of 10 minutes.

21 Set the mixer aside.

a Remove the mixer from the pail slowly and place it on a piece of cardboard or paper.
b Do not allow any of the epoxy to drip onto the separation unit or the surrounding floor outside of the
template.
• If any spillage does occur, immediately clean it up with rags or paper towels.

CAUTION Exercise caution so that the epoxy does not drip on the floor. If dripping or spilling does occur,
ensure that you clean it up immediately. Failure to do so may cause permanent damage to the
flooring.

22 Begin pouring the mixed Micorox into one side of the GSU floor
template.
a Start at either end and slowly pour the epoxy into the floor
template at one of the pour zones. Check for leaks while GSU Pour Zones
pouring; these can be plugged using a small amount of
petroleum jelly.
b Monitor the viewing holes along the side of the GSU. As the area
in which you are pouring begins to fill, move to the center of the
template, and then finally to the other end of the template.
c Alternate between the two end and center pour zones until the
Micorox is approximately 1/8" (3 mm) from the top edge of the
viewing holes. Do not overfill.
d While pouring one side, instruct another FSE to begin preparing
and mixing another pail of the epoxy.

CAUTION Exercise caution so that the epoxy does not drip on the floor. If dripping or spilling does occur,
ensure that you clean it up immediately. Failure to do so may cause permanent damage to the
flooring.
The GSU floor template has three troughs that protrude from each side. These troughs are called pour zones.
These pour zones will be removed once the Micorox has cured later in the procedure. It will be necessary to
move the PET gantry slightly to access the center pour zones.

PET Gantry Mounting

Overview
The proper mounting of the PET gantry to the GSU is the first step of a procedure that will result in the alignment
of the PET and CT gantries. The frame of the PET gantry has a certain amount of deflection under the weight of
the detector and shims must be used to compensate for this. The PET gantry must be installed so that it is
perpendicular to the linear bearings of the GSU.

Positioning the PET Gantry
PROCEDURE

1 Roll the PET gantry into position over the separation unit mounting plate.
• Move the PET gantry so that the two 1/2” (13 mm) diameter holes at the
bottom of the gantry base are positioned over the two pins in the GSU
mounting plate.

NOTE The PET gantry cannot be raised high enough to clear the GSU drive motor
assembly. Therefore, the PET gantry must be rolled into position over the GSU from the front as shown.

b Insert the shims between the bottom of the PET gantry and the top of the mounting plate; equal sets on
both the left and right sides of the gantry. The PET gantry must also be level from side to side, to ensure it
is level in both directions.
c Ensure that the shims are installed under the PET gantry as far as they will go.
d Lower the PET Gantry, using the Left and Right Leveling Bolts simultaneously, until all weight is off of the
Leveling Bolts and on the shims.
Use the plastic calipers to measure the proper amount of shims. Two equal sets of shims are required, one for
the left and right sides of the gantry.
Install enough shims to take up the space between the PET Gantry and the GSU mounting plate.
9 Re-check the PET gantry for level relative to the GSU.
a Tighten the eight 1/2-13 x 1 1/4” hex head screws under the GSU mounting plate.
b Verify that the PET gantry remains level relative to the GSU after the eight 1/2-13 x 1 1/4” hex head screws
have been tightened. If it remains level, proceed to the next step, c. If it does not, you will have to go back to
Step 8 and add or subtract the appropriate amount of shims.
c Remove the two PET Gantry Leveling Bolts.
NOTE Only check the gantry for level when the eight mounting screws located under the GSU mounting plate have been installed
and tightened securely. This ensures that the shims are completely compressed.

Gantry Mechanical Alignment

Personnel Required Time Required

2 Field Service Engineers 2 Hours

Overview
The PET and CT gantries must be mechanically aligned before installation can be completed. To check and verify
this alignment, a laser and mirror are used to indicate the position and angles of the gantries.
To ensure maximum safety and alignment accuracy, be sure to read through the entire procedure before
completing the steps as instructed.
Additionally, the laser and mirror must be checked for accuracy using the calibration procedures as described in
Testing/Calibrating the Laser and Mirror prior to use.

GEMINI GXL Installation Technical Manual Gantry Mechanical Alignment

Testing/Calibrating the Laser and Mirror

You can determine if the laser and mirror assemblies require calibration by observing the shape drawn by the
beam as the assemblies are rotated. If any shape other than a circle is drawn, then there is likely a problem with
debris allowing the assemblies to rock, or there is debris between the components and the mounting surfaces.
Therefore, it is important that the assemblies be placed on a clean and sturdy surface to prevent rocking.

Calibrating the Laser

For the most accurate results, find a place where the ceiling is 10 feet or higher from the laser source. The farther
the distance the more accurate the adjustment will be.
1 Place the laser assembly on the floor, a table, or countertop.
Ensure that the surface is clean and free of debris.
It is important that the surface is level enough to prevent the assembly from rocking back and forth. Dirt and or
debris under the assembly may cause it to rock and affect the pattern drawn by the beam.
NOTE It is common to place these components on a table or countertop during calibration. If someone were to lean on
the table or countertop during calibrations they may compromise the calibration process and the adjustments will
need to be repeated.

2 Remove the three mounting screws, noting the

installation height of the screws before removal. Also
note the associated hardware.
Once the three mounting screws have been removed,
the laser mounting plate is free to swivel on the
gimbal.

WARNING DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY INTO THE LASER WHEN IT IS POWERED ON. FAILURE TO COMPLY MAY RESULT IN
SERIOUS EYE INJURY AND VISION IMPAIRMENT.
3 Turn the laser on. Observe the beam projected onto the ceiling.
NOTE The laser is a battery powered device and will quickly deplete the batteries if left on. To prevent the laser from
becoming non-functional, always turn the laser off when not using it.
4 Verify that the projected beam displays a round dot on the ceiling.
• Carefully spin the laser around on the mounting plate and observe the dot on the ceiling.
Adjust the three screws until the beam projected on the ceiling remains in a fixed position despite the rotation
of the laser assembly as described in Step 5.
5 To adjust the laser:
a Locate the adjusting hardware.

4535 671 38811 Rev. B Philips Medical Systems Confidential and Proprietary Information 107
GEMINI GXL Installation Technical Manual Gantry Mechanical Alignment

NOTE The adjusting screws have a relatively small amount of travel. Should you bottom out any adjusting screws the
results will be unpredictable. This could include, but is not limited to, adjusting a screw without having an effect
on the beam position.
b As you rotate the laser assembly it will draw a circle on the ceiling. Once you determine where the beam is
stop rotating the laser and tighten the screw farthest away from where the beam is positioned.
As you continue to tighten the correct screws the circle diameter will get smaller and smaller until it is zero.
6 Reinstall the laser onto the assembly using the original hardware.
Install the hardware so that each screw is approximately the same height as it was before it was removed.
NOTE If mirror calibration is required, do not reinstall the laser assembly at this time, as the laser is used to
calibrate the mirror.

Calibrating the Mirror

PROCEDURE

1 Unscrew the mirror cap and then remove the cap and lense.

4535 671 38811 Rev. B Philips Medical Systems Confidential and Proprietary Information 108
GEMINI GXL Installation Technical Manual Gantry Mechanical Alignment

CAUTION Do not touch the mirror surface. Fingerprints, dirt, or grease will prevent the laser from reflecting
properly.
2 Place the mirror assembly on the floor or a table.
• Ensure that the surface is clean and free of debris.
It is important that the surface is level enough to prevent the assembly from rocking back and forth. Dirt and or
debris under the assembly may cause it to rock and affect the pattern drawn by the beam.
NOTE It is common to place these components on a table or countertop during calibration. If someone were
to lean on the table or countertop during calibrations they may compromise the calibration process and the
adjustments will need to be repeated.
3 Position the laser above the mirror so that the beam (once turned on) will be directed towards the center of the
mirror.
A stack of books or similar device works well. The laser should be oriented so that the beam (once turned on) is
as close to the center of the mirror as possible.
4 Ensure that the distance between the mirror and wall is a minimum of 8’ (2.4 m). Move the laser and mirror if
necessary to achieve this distance.
The accuracy of this adjustment increases with the distance of the mirror to the wall. There should be no less
than 8’ (2.4 m), but greater than 8’ (2.4 m) is preferred.
5 Remove the three mounting screws from the mirror, noting the installation height of the screws before removal.
Also note the associated hardware.
Once the three screws have been removed, the mirror to will be free to rotate on the gimbal.

7 Rotate the mirror carefully while
noting the position of the beam on

When properly calibrated, this beam will
remain in a fixed location despite the
rotary motion. Recalibration is
necessary if the beam moves in a
circular fashion on the wall while the
mirror is being rotated.

Center Axis Alignment

PROCEDURE

1 Replace the lens in the mirror assembly.

The center hole in the lens is the Laser target.
2 Adjust the height of the CT Gantry until the laser is
within 1 mm (.04”) vertically of the “puck” center hole.
Adjust the four CT Gantry Shipping Wheels, adjusted
equally to maintain parallelism, to attain the correct laser
height.
3 Adjust the left to right level of the CT Gantry until the
laser is within 1 mm (.04”) horizontally of the “puck”
center hole.

NOTE Lowering the right side of the CT Gantry will move the CT Gantry Center Point to the right. Raising the right side of the
CT Gantry will move the Center Point to the left. The opposite is true for the left side.

Adjust the CT Gantry Shipping Wheels in left or right pairs to attain the correct horizontal laser placement.
When raising or lowering one side of the CT Gantry, the Center Point will also be raised or lowered. An overall
height adjustment may be necessary after any angular adjustments have been made.
4 Tighten the five Gantry Jack Screws, located in the CT Gantry base plate, until they make contact with the
floor.
Do not over-tighten the Jack Screws as this can affect the Gantry level.

Alternate CT Leveling Procedure

PROCEDURE

1 Move the PET gantry to the open position.

2 Lower the CT gantry to the lowest position.
Use the CT gantry wheel adjusters to lower the gantry to the lowest possible position.
3 Turn the laser on.
4 Place a bubble level on the laser mirror mounting plate.
5 Raise the CT gantry while trying to maintain level.
Use the CT gantry wheel adjusters to raise the gantry, ensuring that the bubble level reads level. As the gantry
moves upwards, the laser dot will begin to move closer to the hole in the center of the mirror "puck".
6 Stop raising the CT gantry as soon as the laser dot is visible on the same horizontal plane as the hole in the
mirror "puck".
The laser dot should be on the same level as the hole in the center of the mirror "puck", but will likely be either
to the left or right of center.
7 Adjust the sides of the CT gantry as follows:
a To move the laser dot to the left, adjust both right side wheels.
b To move the laser dot to the right, adjust both left side wheels.
Depending on the position of the laser dot, you will have to adjust either both left side or both right side gantry
wheels. Once you have selected which side, adjust the wheels until the laser dot is aligned horizontally with
the hole in the center of the mirror "puck".
8 Adjust the CT gantry to vertically center the laser dot with the hole in the mirror "puck".
• Raise either BOTH front or BOTH rear wheels until the laser dot is centered with the hole in the center of
the mirror "puck".

Final Patient Table Alignment

Final Patient Table Alignment

Overview
Before the Patient Table grout is poured and the table anchored, the alignment of the Patient Table in relation to
the gantries must be checked. This procedure instructs how to check the Patient Table alignment.
1 Extend the Patient Table into the
PET gantry bore.

2 Establish the centerline of the Patient Table Upper Pallet.

3 Obtain a measurement from two opposite, fixed points of the PET gantry bore.
4 Ensure that the centerline of the Patient Table Upper Pallet is exactly half-way between the fixed
points mentioned in step 3.

NOTE If the Patient Table is not centered in the PET gantry bore, center the Patient Table and refer to the Patient Table
Mechanical Alignment and Leveling section for details on aligning the Patient Table.

Fixed Site Pouring the Micorox Compound – Patient Table

Overview
The following steps outline the procedure for mixing and pouring the Micorox compound. The Micorox is a
selfleveling two-component epoxy compound used to fill the volume between the floor and the leveled Patient
Table. You will be required to work against the cure time of the Micorox compound and as such, must make certain
you are ready to use it and will be able to work continuously without interruption. Exercise caution when mixing and
pouring the compound to prevent splashing, as damage to the floor, walls, and cabinets may occur. Wear
disposable gloves at all times and follow the manufacturer's specific instructions for cleaning and skin contact
should that occur. Once the Micorox compound has fully cured, the Patient Table can be anchored to the site floor.

Personnel Required Time Required

1 Hour to perform procedure

1 Field Service Engineer 8 Hours minimum for Micorox to cure
PROCEDURE

1 Prepare the following tools and material are ready for the mixing and pouring of the Micorox compound:
• Electric drill motor with 1/2” chuck
• (2)25 lb. (6.8 kg) cans of Micorox epoxy base
• (2) 1 qt. (0.95L) cans of Micorox hardener
• Disposable gloves
• Mixing paddle
• Plastic, paper, or cardboard sheets
• Tape

GEMINI GXL Installation Technical Manual Pouring the Micorox Compound – Patient Table
2 Protect the floor around the Patient Table. a Tape paper, cardboard, or plastic sheet to the floor around the
outside of the Patient Table.
Use as little tape as possible, to avoid leaving tape or adhesive behind on the floor of the facility.
3 Mix the two components of the floor pour epoxy, one pail at a time.
Each end of the Patient Table template will require approximately
one pail of the Micorox compound. However, for ease of pouring, it
is recommended that only one pail be mixed at a time.

NOTE The epoxy base and hardener must be at room temperature prior to use.
a Place one 25 lb. (6.8 kg) pail of epoxy base on a piece of heavy cardboard or similar floor protection.
b Install the mixing paddle in the drill chuck.

CAUTION Do not mix the epoxy while the pail is sitting directly on the floor. When the two components of
the epoxy are mixed, an exothermic reaction occurs which will heat the metal pail and may
damage the floor of the facility. Place a piece of cardboard or similar under the pail to protect the
floor.
c Put on a pair of latex gloves and remove the lids from one 25 lb.
pail of epoxy base and one 1 qt. container of hardener.
d Pour the entire contents of the hardener into the epoxy base.

e Insert the mixing paddle and blend for a minimum of 10
minutes.

4 Set the mixer aside.

a Remove the mixer from the pail slowly and place it on a piece of cardboard or paper.
b Do not allow any of the epoxy to drip onto the separation unit or the surrounding floor outside of the
template.
• If any spillage does occur, quickly clean it up with rags or paper towels.

CAUTION Exercise caution so that the epoxy does not drip on the floor. If dripping or spilling does occur, ensure
that you clean it up quickly. Failure to do so may cause permanent damage to the flooring.

5 Begin pouring the mixed Micorox into one end of the Patient Table
floor template.
The Patient Table template has two troughs that protrude from each
side. These troughs are called pouring zones. These pour zones Patient Table
Pour Zones
will be removed once the Micorox has cured later in the procedure.
a Start at either end and slowly pour the epoxy into the floor
template at one of the pour zones. Check for leaks while pouring;
these can be plugged using a small amount of petroleum jelly.
b Monitor the viewing holes in the Patient Table base plate. As the
area in which you are pouring begins to fill, move to the pour
zone on the other side of the table end. Alternate between the
two pour zones and continue filling until the Micorox is
approximately 1/8" (3 mm) from the top of the viewing holes. Do
not overfill.
c Instruct another FSE to begin preparing and mixing another pail of the epoxy if more than one-half of a can
was used in the previous pour.
d Repeat step b for the remaining end of the Patient Table floor template.
e Allow the Micorox in both sides of the Patient Table to remain undisturbed for twenty to thirty minutes.
Re-check the Micorox level and add more if required.

CAUTION Exercise caution so that the epoxy does not drip on the floor. if dripping or spilling does occur, ensure that you
clean it up quickly. Failure to do so may cause
permanent damage to the flooring.
6 Insert the pour zone barrier strips. Pour Zone
Barrier Strip
a Coat both sides of the barrier strips with petroleum jelly.
b Insert two barrier strips into each corner of the floor template
as shown.
Pour Zone

4535 671 38811 Rev. B Philips Medical Systems Confidential and Proprietary Information 215
GEMINI GXL Installation Technical Manual Pouring the Micorox Compound – Patient Table
The barrier strips allow the four pour zones to be removed from the sides of the Patient Table.
7 Allow the leveling epoxy to fully cure overnight.
• Clear the room of all loose hardware and tools, and
properly dispose of the material containers before
leaving the facility.

NOTE You may notice that the GSU or table changes levelness slightly after the Micorox has been poured.
This is normal and is not significant.
Plan to resume the installation the following day. The Micorox requires eight hours to fully cure.

CAUTION Ensure that all partially used cans of Micorox are kept well ventilated and away from
combustibles. The exothermic reaction produces significant fumes and heat. Partially used cans
should be placed on a concrete floor or similar until the compound has fully cured. Failure to
comply may result in damage to the site floors and/or equipment.
