SN Marks

Food chain is a sequence

of organisms where nutrients and energy is transferred from one organism to the other. Each
step or level of the food chain forms a trophic level. A food chain only follows just one path as
animals find food. A hawk eats a snake, which has eaten a frog, which has eaten a grasshopper,
which has eaten grass. A food web on the other hand shows the many different paths plants
and animals are connected. As an example, hawk might also eat a mouse, a squirrel, a frog or
some other animal. The snake may eat a beetle, a caterpillar, or some other animal. And so on
for all the other animals in the food chain. A food web is several food chains connected
together.

Ozone layer depletion is the thinning of the ozone layer present in the
upper atmosphere. This happens when the chlorine and bromine atoms in the atmosphere
come in contact with ozone and destroy the ozone molecules. One chlorine can destroy
100,000 molecules of ozone. Because of the depletion of the ozone layer, humans are being
exposed to the harmful ultraviolet radiations of the sun. This results in serious health issues
among humans, such as skin diseases, cancer, sunburns, cataract, quick ageing and an weak
immune system.

Organisms can be grouped as producers, consumers

and decomposers according to the manner in which they obtain their sustenance from the
environment. All green plants and certain bacteria which can produce food by photosynthesis

As human beings, we occupy the top level in any food chain,

this means that the maximum concentration of the chemicals used in agriculture get
accumulated in our bodies. This accumulation of non-biodegradable chemicals (like pesticides)
in the living organisms (like plants, animals, including man) in a food chain is known as biological

The ten percent law states that only 10 percent of the energy
entering a particular trophic level of organisms is available for transfer to the next higher
trophic level. Green plants captures solar energy incident on the Earth through the biochemical
process of photosynthesis. When plants are eaten up by herbivores, the chemical energy
stored in the plants is transferred to these animals. These animals (herbivores) utilize some of
this energy for metabolic activities, some energy is “released as heat and the remaining energy
is stored. The process of energy transferred is similarly repeated with carnivores and so on.

The introduction of disposable cups was hailed as a step

forward for reasons of hygiene. No one at that time had perhaps thought about the impact
caused by the disposal of millions of these cups on a daily basis. Some time back, kulhads, that
is, disposable cups made of clay, were suggested as an alternative. But a little thought showed
that making these kulhads on a large scale would result in the loss of the fertile top-soil. Now
disposable paper-cups are being used. Using items made of biodegradable materials because

The ecosystem is the basic structural and functional unit of environment . The term 3
ecosystem was first proposed by Tansley in 1935. Traditionally, an ecosystem is defined as any
unit that includes all the living organisms (the community) in a given area interacting with the
physical environment so that a flow of energy leads to clearly defined trophic structure, biotic
diversity and material cycling between the abiotic and biotic components within
(Ramakrishnan, 2001). The ecological study of ecosystems or “Ecosystem ecology” is
considered as the most important aspect of ecology.
