LAB REPORT#01

SAFETY GUIDELINES AND INTRODUCTION TO MANUFACTURING PROCESSES LAB

OBJECTIVES:
The main objectives of this laboratory report are listed below:
1. Introduction and know-how about manufacturing processes lab.
2. To understand the overall layout of the manufacturing processes lab including different
work-shops.
3. To go through the safety guidelines of manufacturing processes lab.
INTRODUCTION:
Manufacturing is a value-add process, allowing businesses to sell finished products at a premium
over the value of raw materials used. By refining and processing this raw material into something
more useful, individuals and businesses were adding value. This added value carried with it a
higher price, making manufacturing a profitable endeavor. People began to specialize in the
skills needed to manufacture goods, while others provided funds to businesses to purchase tools
and materials.
The layout of the manufacturing processes lab can be defined and interpreted as the number of
engineering workshops involved in the study. They are listed below:
1. Pattern Shop.
2. Advanced Machine Shop.
3. Foundry Shop.
4. Welding Shop.
A short interpretation of these mentioned shops in association to manufacturing processes lab is
given below:
1. PATTERN SHOP:
A workshop where geometric patterns are made. It is because everything in the foundry
shop has to start with a “pattern”.  A pattern or tooling is a full-size model of the part you
are trying to cast, patterns can be made from various materials such as mahogany, metal
or plastic.  It is very important to have suitable patterns, for the quality of the casting is
influenced by the quality of the pattern.

2. ADVANCED MACHINE SHOP:

A workshop where the mechanical machines like lathe machine, slotting machine,
milling machines, shaper machines and drilling machines etc. to enhance the finishing
and machining of the patterned or foundry jobs.
3. FOUNDRY SHOP:
A workshop where the metal casting is prepared by melting and pouring the molten metal
into molds. Some of the commonly used tools in foundry shop for molding process are
shovel, trowel, riddle, rammer, draw spike, swab, vent wire and slick tool.

4. WELDING SHOP:
A workshop where two pieces of metal can be joined together. The process of welding
doesn't merely bond the two pieces together as in brazing and soldering, but, through the
use of extreme heat and sometimes the addition of other metals or gases, causes the
metallic structures of the two pieces to join together and become one in a strong regard.
There are a number of different welding methods, including spot welding, arc welding,
and gas welding.
GENERAL LAB SAFETY RULES & GUIDELINES:
The general lab safety rules and guidelines in the workshops associated with manufacturing labs
are listed below:

 Know locations of laboratory safety showers, eyewash stations, and fire extinguishers.
The safety equipment may be located in the hallway near the laboratory entrance.
 Know emergency exit routes.
 Avoid skin and eye contact with all chemicals.
 Minimize all chemical exposures.
 No horseplay will be tolerated.
 Assume that all chemicals of unknown toxicity are highly toxic.
 Post warning signs when unusual hazards, hazardous materials, hazardous equipment, or
other special conditions are present.
 Avoid distracting or startling persons working in the laboratory.
 Use equipment only for its designated purpose.
 Combine reagents in their appropriate order, such as adding acid to water.
 Avoid adding solids to hot liquids.
 All laboratory personnel should place emphasis on safety and chemical hygiene at all
times.
 Never leave containers of chemicals open.
 All containers must have appropriate labels. Unlabeled chemicals should never be used.
 Do not taste or intentionally sniff chemicals.
 Never consume and/or store food or beverages or apply cosmetics in areas where
hazardous chemicals are used or stored.
CONCLUSION:

It is concluded that since the basic concern of this lab is the practical observation of
manufacturing processes course specially the importance of four listed workshops and their
concern functions in manufacturing.
