Experiment No. 1
Common Chemistry Laboratory Equipment

I. Introduction:
Effective learning and teaching of chemistry concepts involves handling, seeing and
manipulating real materials and objects. These science processes can only be done through
laboratory experiments that will provide greater opportunities for learning and help
encourage a deeper understanding of concepts. These offer students the opportunity of
learning science through hands on experiences.
Proper knowledge on how to use the chemical and laboratory equipment, and
procedures properly are necessary before engaging in any laboratory experiments. Without
having the accurate information or knowledge, it can be too tough as well as risky to go with
the experiments. Use of lab equipment can have dangerous side effects if not handled properly.
II. Objectives:
1. To identify the names and uses of common laboratory equipment used in
chemistry laboratory
2. To explain some important guidelines and procedures in performing laboratory
activities inside the chemistry laboratory

III. Procedure:
Explore the laboratory equipment, its uses, and some policies and guidelines in
chemistry laboratory by viewing the video by Rebelen Cabello using this link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ni5UOGp0hk&feature=youtu.be

After viewing, answer the following guide questions:

1. Why should the spatula used for spooning solid chemicals from a reagent bottle
be clean and dry?
The spatula used for spooning solid chemicals are always maintained clean and dry
to avoid contaminating both the portion taken and the remaining chemical left in
the reagent bottles. Using a dirty spatula may result to the impurity of the
chemicals in the containers or an undesired chemical reaction.
2. Why must flat-topped stoppers be laid with their flat sides on the table?
Laying the flat- topped stopper on its side may pose an accident and an
undesirable mixture of chemicals scattered on the table. It is usually laid with its
flat side to avoid it from rolling off the table and contaminating it.

3. What is the use of the glass rod in transferring liquid reagents?

When transferring liquid reagents, glass rods are used to prevent the liquids from
spilling. Putting a glass rod up against the beaker's pouring edge causes the liquid to
run down the rod and into the receiving container as compared to spilling over the
lip.

4. In heating liquids in a test tube, why should the tube not be pointed to anyone
while it is being heated?

When heating liquids in the test tube, pointing it to anyone is avoided because there
is a high chance that the rapid heating may result in the boiling liquid to spit out from
the tube; thus, injuring a person or spilling it in the eye of someone. This is the
reason why we are instructed to incline the test tube within an angle of 450 when
heating it on a Bunsen burner.

5. When heating liquids in a test tube, why is the test tube moved back and forth
across the flame?
The test tube is moved back and forth across the flame during heating liquids to
ensure consistent heating. When the rapid boiling of heat is only concentrated on
the bottom of the tube, it may cause the liquid to explode or shatter the testing tube.

6. What precaution should be followed in preparing dilute acid solution?

First and foremost, we should always wear proper safety gear such as lab coats,
rubber gloves, and goggles before starting the experimentation. When preparing a
dilute acid solution, the acid should be poured into the water rather than the other
way around to avoid the acid from spattering.
7. Give at least five of the following:
a. Draw five common laboratory equipment used in chemistry lab and list its
uses
1. Test tube -Used to handle chemical. Convenient container for heating
small amounts of liquids or solids.
2. Graduated Cylinder - Measures the volume of liquid
3. Erlenmeyer flask (also known as conical flask and titration flask)
-Contain liquids and for mixing, heating, cooling, incubation, filtration
storage, and other liquid-handling processes.
4. Beaker - Container to hold liquid or solid samples
5. Watch glass - A surface to evaporate a liquid or heat solids
- Hold solids while being weighed
- Cover for a beaker

b. Safety rules or precautions inside the chemistry laboratory

1. Dress appropriately in the laboratory.

2. Wear protective goggles or glasses at all times in the
laboratory.
3. Keep your working areas organized and clean as you work.
4. Avoid all direct contact with chemicals.
5. Dispose waste properly.

8. Explain the importance of knowing laboratory safety rules, guidelines, and

waste management.

Recognizing the laboratory safety rules and guidelines is significant because it

could help you avoid unnecessary accidents that may gradually hurt someone or
destroy the facility in use. Considering that the laboratory is filled with different
kinds of chemicals, a person’s safety should be the top priority as they are at risk
especially when they are handling harmful substances. In addition, waste
management should be put into practice because it prevents the chemicals from
being contaminated and ensures a hazard safety environment for the people
using the laboratory.
