ARRIVAL INSTRUCTIONS
Please arrive at Adolfo Suarez Barajas International Airport in Madrid no later than 12pm on the official arrival date of
your Madrid program, January 15, 2024.
You should proceed directly to your housing placement via taxi from the airport. IES Abroad Madrid staff will meet you
at your housing placement to help you check in.

Via Taxi
After collecting your luggage, follow the signs to the taxi queue. The taxi ride will cost you approximately €30, at your
own expense. There is no extra charge for luggage. All taxis will accept credit cards; make sure that you tell them upon
entering the taxi if you will be paying with credit card. It is recommended to bring some cash (€100) in case the card
reader does not work. It is not customary to tip as you do in the US, though you may round up slightly if satisfied with
the service.
Via Bus
Look or ask for the Airport Express 24 hours bus service (Exprés Aeropuerto). It stops outside all the airport terminals and costs
approximately €5. Take the bus to Atocha. From there take a taxi or the Metro to your housing assignment. The taxi ride should cost
approximately €15.

Via Metro
The metro station is located within the airport. Take the pink line 8 all the way to Nuevos Ministerios, where it ends, and then switch
to the metro line that will take you to your housing assignment. To determine which metro line to take to your housing assignment,
please check the metro website as the Line 6 metro is closed from Nuevos Ministerios to Sainz de Baranda due to renovations. A
metro ticket is around €5 including the airport supplement and free pocket metro maps are available at most stations. Be aware
that most metro stops do not have elevators or escalators. You should be prepared to carry all of your belongings up and down
stairs and through metro turnstiles.

Via train/Cercanías
There is also a train (Cercanías) station in the airport, at Terminal 4 (if you arrive at Terminal 1-2 you should take a bus to get to
Terminal 4), with trains running every 30 minutes to Chamartín, Nuevos Ministerios or Atocha. Get off at Nuevos Ministerios and
then Metro or taxi to your housing assignment.

EARLY ARRIVALS
You may not move into your IES Abroad housing early. If you arrive before the official arrival date, you are responsible
for your accommodations until you move into your IES Abroad housing on the first day of the program.
If you plan to arrive early or stay beyond the program end date, we recommend that you purchase additional health
insurance coverage through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI), your IES Abroad health insurance
provider during the duration of your program. See the IES Abroad Student Handbook for more information.
If you plan to arrive before the official arrival date, please contact your IES Abroad Advisor to discuss the impacts this
may have on your student visa.

Students should call the IES Emergency line +34.636.531.748 on the arrival day to inform Center staff that you have
arrived and so they can assist you with the check in at your residence hall or apartment.

LATE ARRIVALS
Late arrivals are not permitted unless warranted by a documented medical or family emergency and approved by IES
Abroad.
If your flights are delayed or canceled before you arrive in your host country, use the information provided in the Print
Me document (emailed a week before your program begins) to contact us. Our staff will communicate the details of
your delayed arrival to the on-site Center staff.
Upon arrival to Madrid, call the IES Abroad Madrid Emergency Number for further instructions. You will need to take a
taxi (at your own expense, approximately €30-35 directly to your housing assignment.

ORIENTATION
You will be provided with a final schedule upon arrival. Orientation will begin at 3:15pm on arrival day. During
orientation, IES Abroad Madrid staff will discuss important safety and security measures and provide you with
information on housing, field trips, and academic guidelines.
The student handbook contains important information that you can always refer to during your time abroad. Refer to
the Student Orientation Handbook to view your full orientation schedule. Additionally, there will be a tour to
familiarize you with the area around your housing placement and the transportation system. They will also show you
where to purchase a cell phone or SIM card and answer any questions you have about the city. You will be provided
with a final orientation schedule upon arrival.
Furthermore, you will be presented with your enrollment options including registration procedures for partner
university courses and internships and IES Abroad elective courses. The orientation course includes intensive Spanish
instruction and a short, organized field trip.
