3 Study skills: Using a dictionary

Tip
A dictionary can give you a lot of useful information about a word. For example:
● how to spell the word
● how to pronounce the word
● the function of the word: noun, adjective, verb, adverb, preposition, etc.
● the different forms of the word: plural, past tense, third person, -ing form
● the different meanings and functions of the word.

● The words in a dictionary are in alphabetical order. The words at the top of the dictionary page are called
guidewords. They tell you which words you will find on the page.

Tip
The title of the text can tell you a lot about the subject of the text.

● The pictures or photos can also tell you about the subject of the text.

● The first sentence in a paragraph often tells you what the paragraph is about.
‘You can drive the Skycar or fly it like a plane …’
● There are different ways to read a text. We don’t always read a text in the same way.
● Scanning is reading to find particular information in a text, for example: dates, names, times, places.
To scan, look quickly through the text but don’t read every word.
… He was born in 1984 in Liverpool. When he was ten, he moved to London …

● Skimming is reading quickly to get a general idea of the text or the most important points. To skim,
look quickly along the lines of the text and read the important words or sentences.

… Last weekend I went walking in the mountains with some friends. It was a cold, sunny day and we
could see for miles. We climbed for four hours to the top of the mountain. There was a lot of snow
and ice and in some places it was quite dangerous …
● Intensive reading means reading the text in detail. We usually read short texts like messages,
instructions and recipes intensively, because they contain a lot of important information in not
many words.
