UNIT II TOPIC 3: TOOL OFFSETTING

REQUIRED PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:


- Creating, Encoding, Deleting, and Searching Program
- Manual Cutting using the Handle, Rapid, and Cutting Mode
- Tool Installation onto the Machine Turret
- Jaw Adjustment of the Hydraulic Chuck
OBJECTIVES:
- Ensure that the machined part's dimensions match the design specifications within the specified
tolerances.
- Ensure consistency in the machining process by maintaining uniform tool o sets and minimizing
variations between successive machined parts.
- Set tool o sets to prevent tool breakage by avoiding collisions or excessive forces during machining.
OVERVIEW:
Tool O setting
The purpose of performing tool o setting is to synch the tool coordinates with the perceived work
o set of the material to be cut and ensure that the cutting tool cuts through the workpiece precisely based on
the coordinates in the encoded part program.
This process will be done as many as the number of tools you have identified and used on your part
program.
ACTIVITY:
A. OFFSETTING THE Z-AXIS COORDINATE FOR TOOL #1:
Step 1: Set turret index to Tool #1
> Perform a facing operation manually using the
“HANDLE” or “CUTTING” Mode.
*While the tool touches and is positioned right in
front of the face of the workpiece,

Step 2: Do the following operations:


> “OFF/SET” Function button.

> Press twice the RIGHT MENU KEY [>] then


select the “W. SHIFT” option in the CRT
display.

> Using the arrow keys, go to “Z” under the


“MEASUREMENT” option.

> Type “0” to indicate that the current


position of the cutting tool will be your Z0.
> Press “INPUT” on the CRT display.

*Notice how the Z value under “Shift Value”


changes and updates its coordinate. You
have now successfully synched the Z o set
of your tool no. 1.
