TEXT :
One of my friends named Akka once wanted to celebrate her birthday by visiting an
orphanage, instead of having a party in a restaurant. The previous evening, we went to
find out how we can help, may be we could pay for a session of their lunch or something
we thought. We found that the children were cared for very well.
I remember what the caretaker said : No, we don't have a money issue. If you all can
come and find some ways to spend time with the children that day, that'll be a greater
help for us. The children will also have the experience of meeting new people and having
fun.
We planned out the next day and, quickly notified some of our friends and their parents.
We organised some games with the children, conducted a quiz. Some of us had music
talents so we had a short music session and encouraged the children to come out with
their hums and songs. We also got a few of them to dance a little bit for a few popular
Bollywood numbers. We had paid for sponsoring the lunch too. We had food with them,
we had carried a few extras like icecream, sweets and foreign chocolates. Some of our
friends let them fiddle with the cameras, and you'll be surprised with the kind of angles,
poses and shots the kids came up with. (A little sports would have been a great thing, but
we hadn't thought of it at that time).
After the group photograph in the end, there was a moment of calm when everyone was
about to clean up and leave.
A kid asked my friend :" Akka, when are you coming back next ? "
The pining for love and care was there in the eyes. It was heart-rending.
My friend lifted the kid, patted her and offered to go for five Sundays to teach some
photography. She did that.
It was a good lesson about how, for the little ones, even the little gestures can go a long
way. And it's not always about the money and comforts.
