Problem Set on laws of motion

1. A force of 20 N gives an object an acceleration of 5 m/s2. What force would be

needed to give the same object an acceleration of 1 m/s2? (2.5 pts)
2. A bicycle and its rider together have a mass of 80 kg. If the bicycle’s speed is 6 m/s,
how much force is needed to bring it to a stop in 4 seconds? (2.5 pts)
3. How large a force F is needed in the figure below to pull out the 6 kg block with an
acceleration of 1.50 m/s2? Neglect the friction in the contact surfaces (5 pts)

4. Three blocks with masses of 6 kg, 9 kg, and 10 kg are connected as shown below.
Neglecting the effect of friction find (a) the acceleration of the system and (b) the
tension in the cord on the left and in the cord on the right. (10 pts)

Discussion (5pts each)

1. Can anything ever have a downward acceleration greater than the gravitational
acceleration? If not, Why? If so, how can it be done?
2. When you “weigh” an object on one pan of an equal arm balance by putting standard
masses on the other pan until the beam is horizontal, are you actually determining
the object’s weight or its mass?
3. When a body is accelerated, a force is invariably acting on it. Does this mean that,
when a force is applied to a body, it is invariably accelerated?
