CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE
INTRODUCTION

Rationale

With the new school year of 2023-2024 starting, we ought to be expected to

study hard and get good grades for us to achieve something. Maybe it is getting the

honors award, or graduating. No matter what it is, we work for our goals. These awards,

however, are not easy to achieve and require endless work. With this in mind, stress is

a common outcome for students who want to achieve these awards. Students around

the world reported that their education could be related to their high-stress levels.

Pascoe et.al (2020).

Holy Name University is a school in Tagbilaran City that has students who are

high achievers. This school is one of the schools that is well-known for its great

education, being one of the top schools in Bohol. With this in mind, there are bound to

be students who are stressed and pressured to fulfill their high expectations. Academic

stress is caused primarily by schoolwork overload and the pressure to get high grades.

Academic stress has been identified as the primary cause of these alarming figures.

Lee & Larson (2000) explain this stress as an interaction between environmental

stressors, student’s appraisal, and reactions to the same. It has now become a grave

reality that is termed a “career stopper” (Kadapatti & Vijayalaxmi, 2012). It, therefore,

becomes a significant cause of concern as it is symptomatic of rising mental health

concerns in India (Nakamura & Ch, 2011). According to Shilubane et.al (2014), students

often felt guilty about their failures and decided to commit suicide because of it.

Moreover, stress could lead to depression and could potentially influence suicidal ideas.

With the aforementioned…….. The sreseqrchers major goal was to determine whether

or not students experience academic stress. This study was also undertaken to

determine if there are gender and stream variations in academic stress reported by

participants. Gender and stream differences were also observed in the different aspects

or causes of stress as judged by the Academic Stress Scale. It was hypothesized that

there are significant gender disparities and stream differences in academic stress. It

was also expected that the sources of stress would vary greatly depending on gender

and stream. The main purpose of the study is for students to acquire knowledge about

stress and its effects on our daily lives.
