Academic Trials and Coping Mechanisms of Senior

High School Students

CHAPTER 1

The Problem and Its Setting

Introduction

During the month of August, year 2020,

Undersecretary Leonor Magtolis Briones of Department of

Education, generally known as DepEd secretary, addressed

the public that the classes will continue. Since

students cannot be able to go school, there shall be an

alternative learning system, the modular and online

learning. Online learning or online class are classes

conducted over the internet so Wi-Fi and Mobile Data are

needed. Modular Learning on the other side is learning

that uses modules and self-learning based on the most

essential learning competencies provided by the

Department of Education.

Even though students adopted the new normal for

learning, academic trials are unavoidable. There are

circumstances that is beyond reach of students like the

students lack of internet connection, devices,

geographical location, financial problem, etc. and

while there are the problems beyond reach of student,

there is also the environmental, mental, and emotional

1
Academic Trials and Coping Mechanisms of Senior

complications such as anxiety, stress, depression,

expectations, low self-esteem, relationship

difficulties, and many more. Personal problems can also

interfere to the growth of students and their academic

performances. There are times that a student gets a

continuous working sheet with a short due date of

passing the materials or files that it made the students

confused where to starts and stressed out. Based on an

article paper in Inquirer.net titled “Fewer Students in

Online Class Seen” written by the columnist Adonis, Meg

(2020) millions of students continue to endure the

difficulties of the new learning systems, latest data

from the Department of Education (DepEd) showed that

only 25 million students were enrolled for school year

2020-2021, leaving nearly 3 million out of school.

The researcher’s purpose in doing this study is

to determine the academic trials and coping mechanisms

of senior high school students in Barangay Cavite,

Guimba, Nueva Ecija in response to the new normal of

learning. Further, the student researchers conduct this

research to fully understand the academic struggles of

the students in Barangay Cavite and how they cope with

the demands of the new normal in studying.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

Academic trials are the challenges that

students will interface in order to succeed. Cope up

mechanisms, however, are the strategies or tactics being

used to deal with stress and other negative things in

life. The purpose of this study is to present the

academic trails and coping mechanisms of Senior

Highschool students during the time of Covid-19

pandemic. Researchers have found some supporting

documents. Many recent studies by experts have focused

on the academic trials of the students while some

focused on the coping mechanism that the students showed

to deal with stress brought by the new normal of

learning.

A research study by Chandra (2021) explains that

scholarship requirements like maintaining high grades

and perfect attendance, family-related pressures like

broken family problems or family expectations, student’s

competition in an environment, and financial

complications are some of the reasons for a student to

interact or experience stress. Students are vulnerable

to academic trials, as time goes by, their emotional and

mental health will be tangled due to the feeling of

exhaustion and stress or depression. Academic trials,

low self-esteem, and a poor concertation is a type of

3
Academic Trials and Coping Mechanisms of Senior
High School Students
high-level stress that has a high impact from students

that surely affect their academic performances.

Academic stress creates negative impacts on a student’s

well-being, decision making, career, overthinking,

comorbid conditions and sleeping difficulties. While

some students are experiencing stress from academic

trials, some are developing cope up mechanisms to deal

with the stress brought by academic trials. Some are

trying new activities and hobbies like music, painting,

scripting, cooking, etc. Additionally, some are having

family time or helping their family to cope with the

difficulties in their academics.

Another study on the topic by Guevarra and Cimanes,

(2017) maintains that most of students do not have or do

not know time management. Answering tons school works

and academic activities while providing time for family

and loved ones can put a pressure and stressful

environment to a student. Another source of trial in a

student in academic is the expectation of the student's

peers. It is a stereotype that having high scores and

good grades is a “must” to impress the parents, putting

the students in a suffocating spot, succeeding to please

others expectation. Not only on physical aspect,

Academic trials can also affect the students mental, and

emotional aspect by emerging anxiety, stress, and

4
Academic Trials and Coping Mechanisms of Senior
High School Students
depression into students. On the bright side however,

by keeping things into perspective, having fun in life

nor in hobbies, and enjoying indulgences are few of the

cope up mechanism to make a student’s life balanced and

neutral.

Previous research by Ancheta and Ancheta,

(2020) showed that the new normal to learn during the

pandemic created a big fuss in the country of

Philippines. An obvious gap is sighted to those who can

continue learning in the new normal and those who

cannot. It is the matter of distance, communication, and

financial status. The fact that not everyone can afford

the basis for the new normal in academic is truly

unacceptable to the youngsters that seeks for knowledge

and guidance. However, the inequality triggered as the

school system exhibit the Department of Education's

mantra or quotation "no child left behind" while some of

the children in this country wants to enroll and study

but cannot due to the economic crisis, poverty and

financial complications. Distance learning created

trials to students and also for the teachers, where

response means adapting the new normal.

One early work by Mazo, (2015) proves that

adapting new environment can cause difficulties to

students, as well as academic pressure and socializing

5
Academic Trials and Coping Mechanisms of Senior
High School Students
with new peers. For a student that is accustomed in

face-to-face classes and socializing with other fellow

students, it is hard to fit in to times like this.

Communication is one of the keys to succeed, but how can

someone communicate to somebody without barely knowing

the person. It is one of the academic trials in

distance learning that the students are facing. For

instance, is the seldom communication between the

student and the teacher in this time of pandemic.

Previous research showed by Mahapatra and

Sharma, (2020) reveals the psychological effects of

academic trials in students. Students of secondary and

tertiary education deals with ongoing stressors as the

education system demands to continue reaching students

using distance learning or online class. By the time it

started, the amount of people that gets infected by the

COVID-19 virus have arisen, affecting the physical,

mental, and emotional health of pupils that adds to the

academic trial that the students are facing. The

suffocating academic trials are too much for some

students leading them to drop out, future unemployment,

and increased their psychiatric disorders such as

depression, anxiety and substance use disorders.

A recent study by De Guzman et al., (2020)

concluded that overthinking and lack of support from the

6
Academic Trials and Coping Mechanisms of Senior
High School Students
government are the academic trials of students in online

and blended learning. Due dates and deadlines of school

works brings the tension and anxiousness to the students

affecting the student’s academic performances and the

outcome of their work. Government's lack of support or

basically injustice is also a stressor for the students.

Witnessing the favoritism of the government in a

particular place can brings anger and stress to the

household that will sure affect the mindset of the

students.

Seminal contributions have been made by Pastor et

al., (2020) state that several students find coping

mechanisms in this isolation that helps them overcome

the stressful scenario of modular and online learning.

Coping mechanisms are the students striving hope that

helped them to be stable and balance the negative

effects of the quarantine and pile of learning

materials. Some may find the family time as their

comfort, chatting with friends using the social media

platforms, and playing online games. Reading biblical

texts and articles is one of the most effective copes up

mechanism that fights the negativity, helps the

individual in emotional, mental, and spiritual manner.

Previous studies by Rotas and Cahapay, (2020)

showed that due to many responsibilities that the

7
Academic Trials and Coping Mechanisms of Senior
High School Students
students are handling, stressful scenarios are

unavoidable for students in remote learning. This type

of educational system in time of pandemic may feature

that learning is complicated but students keep on moving

forward and continues survive the academic trials.

Cope up mechanisms are the antidote and the protection

of the physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Based on the survey, connection to loved ones like

family, friends, or close relatives can relieve stress,

as well as self-motivation and diverting attention to

other things like hobbies and passions.

The latest study by Freire et al., (2020)

reveals that academic and non-academic demands have an

effect on student’s wellbeing and academic performances.

Adaptation of students to new context, insufficient time

for academic task, and the pressure in preparation and

answering exams are included in academic demands or

academic trials while non-academic demands are the

change of environment, socialization, and financial

problems. Both may be different but the two demands

have a big impact on a student's academic performance

and growth. On coping strategies however, approach and

evasive strategy are the two general broad type of

coping mechanism. Approach strategies aims to directly

changing the problem and negative emotions by cognitive

8
Academic Trials and Coping Mechanisms of Senior
High School Students
and behavioral mechanisms that includes strategies like

planning, taking specific action, instrumental and

emotional support, positive reappraisal, and acceptance.

Evasive strategy also uses cognitive and behavioral

mechanism such as denial, distractions, and wishful

thinking. Both strategies can be helpful to students

overcoming the academic trials of online classes. In

Addition, self-efficacy or belief of a person to oneself

ability to accomplish and achieve a particular goal is

considered an effective way to students to cope up with

academic trials, also, self-motivation can have great

effects on a student’s self-esteem and academic

performance.

Sampling Procedure

This study was done online and only at Barangay

Cavite, Guimba, Nueva Ecija, among the Senior High

School students of school year 2020-2021 who’s

experiencing academic trials and coping mechanisms to

survive academically. Using the quota sampling

procedure, the researchers were able to pick out the

thirty (30) Senior High School students of Barangay,

Cavite, Guimba, Nueva Ecija who’s experiencing academic

trials and coping mechanisms in order to give response

to the new normal for learning.

Research Instruments

16
Academic Trials and Coping Mechanisms of Senior
High School Students
The researchers conceptualize an online survey

questionnaire in google forms as an instrument to gather

data from Senior High School students. The survey was

composed of thirty (30) questions that are based on the

statement of the problem. The survey forms were divided

into two sections. The first section was the collection

of the demographical information of the Senior High

School students from Barangay Cavite, Guimba, Nueva

ecija. The other section consists questions that is

related to the academic trials and coping mechanism of

students, and the importance of responding to the new

normal of learning. Using the Likert scale, the Senior

High School students respond with the following options:

Strongly Agree (5), Agree (4), Undecided (3), Disagree

(2), Strongly Disagree (1); or Always (5), Often (4),

Sometimes (3), Rarely (2), Never (1).

Method of Data Collection

It shows that the respondents had enough cellular

devices to submit file and activities online.

A related study by Mahapatra and Sharma, (2020)

reveals the effects of academic trials to students

psychologically. As the E-learning started students

became prone to mental and emotional illness like

anxiety, stress, and depression affecting their academic

performance. Students may feel and exhaustion due to

A research study by Chandra, (2021) proved that

discovering new enjoyable activities is a great way to

cope with stress and anxiety brought by the academic

trials. Hobbies like gardening, cooking, painting, or

listening to music may bring comfort or lift up a

person's mood because our brains to produce chemicals

like dopamine and serotonin, which evokes feelings of

joy, whereas relaxes the mind and the body.

with the weighted mean of 4.53, states that the

Senior High School students responded to the new normal

of learning because, the respondents are aware that

their family wanted them to finish this school year.

Statement number 2 on the other side states responding

to academic trials to be a role model to other students

has the lowest weighted mean of 3.56.

A study showed by Guevarra and Cimanes, (2017)

states that students are aware of their parent’s

expectation and standards when it comes to academics.

Pleasing the peer's expectation on getting a passing

score and grade every time in school may affect the

student’s mental health and give starts the emergence

of stress, unhealthy over thinking, and anxiety that

may lead to depression. Forcing students to be on top

of class is a toxic stereotype that needs to be remove

or change.

CHAPTER IV

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

In this chapter, the summary of the study,

conclusion and recommendation are presented.

Summary

This research investigated and revolves around

the academic trials and coping mechanisms of Senior

High School students in Barangay Cavite, Guimba, Nueva

Ecija in response to the new normal of learning. Semi-

qualitative design was used by the researchers in this

study. Quota sampling method was used for the

selection. Whether in public or private, a population

31
Academic Trials and Coping Mechanisms of Senior
High School Students
of 30 Senior High School respondents in Barangay Cavite

was picked out to gather information for this study.

Using the Likert Scale, the researchers made an online

survey in google forms and distributed the link to the

30 selected respondents. The collected data of the

respondents were analyzed with the use of descriptive

statistics of frequency count, percentage and weighted

mean.

Conclusion

Based on the findings derived from this study, the

following conclusions were drawn:

1. Both male and female Senior High School students in

Barangay Cavite, Guimba, Nueva with the age of 16-17

years old experienced academic trials and coping

mechanisms since the new normal of learning started.

2. Over thinking, anxiety, stress and depression are

the conventional academic trails experienced by the

32
Academic Trials and Coping Mechanisms of Senior
High School Students
Senior High School students in Barangay Cavite,

Guimba, Nueva Ecija.

3. Listening to music is the most used coping

mechanism by the Senior High School students relieve

or to keep up from the effects of online learning.

4. The reason why the Senior High School students

responded to the new normal of learning is because,

the students are aware of their parents wanted them

to finish the school year 2020-2021.

Recommendation

The following are the recommendations

1. Human brain is also an organ, it can have

illnesses. The researchers recommend to everybody to

take care of their mental, emotional, and physical

health.

33
Academic Trials and Coping Mechanisms of Senior
High School Students
2. The researchers recommend to the teachers and the

students to keep it neutral. There are times to rest

and there are times to work hard

3. The researchers recommend to the students to work

smart not hard.

4. The researchers recommend to the parents to stop the

stereotype of forcing and scolding a child to study

hard and achieve academic rewards. Every child has

different level of intelligence. Don’t raise a child

just to have a retirement plan.

5. The researchers recommend to the students that enjoy

life and grow as an individual but don’t neglect

learning new things from school.
