Evolution Of Media

-By Chhavi Khanduja

Media is an integral part of all our lives. Besides providing information it has also become a source for
great entertainment over the years. But when did it emerge? How did all of this happen ? Let’s go
through that.

The beginning of human communication dates back

to the ancient cave paintings , drawn maps, and
writing. Papyrus and Role are some of the earliest
forms of writing. Papyrus appeared in Egypt whereas
Role originated in China in the year 123 A.C.
Diamond sutra was the 1st book printed in the
wooden blocks , it was printed in China in 6C.E.

Gutenberg was the first European to use the first printing press in 1493.
Gutenberg’s press and others of its era in Europe owed much to the
medieval paper press, which was in turn modelled after the ancient wine-
and-olive press of the Mediterranean era. Gutenberg used his press to print
an edition of the Bible in 1455. With mass printing available newspaper
could be made in the 1640 in England, London Gazette was the first
commercial newspaper in 1666.

After the newspaper , phonograph was invented , patented by

Thomas Edison in 1877. With invention of phonograph people could
finally store and transmit audio. Then came the era of photographs
or cameras. George Eastman who founded the Eastman Kodak
Company in 1892 made cameras more available in public in 1888. In
1894 with the invention of Radio – a wireless and paperless
transmission could take place. Nikola Tesla was most likely the 1st
company to do it.
The first movie show to take place was in the first movie
theatre in New York in the year of 1896. With that , videos
could be stored and transmitted. The first full length film of
12 minutes was the “ Great Train Robbery ”made in 1903.
This paved the way for television which came first black and
white invented by Phlio Farnsworth in 1928 and then
coloured in 1936.

Thus began the era of computers , first of all business computers

were invented in 1964 which were huge. Then in 1971 Sony made
the first VCR publically. In 1976 Apple I and Apple II were
released. Computers have then advanced rapidly . They have
come from massive machines to small laptops with more power.
