Synopsis of the play

Seeking immortality, Mojagbe ascends the throne by trickery. With the aid of his sorcerer, Isepe. He
blocks the mouth of death by killing his own mother. He whets the throat of death with the blood of his
first wife and appeases death with the six foetuses in his young bride's womb. With his powers, Mojagbe
becomes tyrannical and his chiefs, people and even spirits of the village begin to plot his removal.
Layewu the community's masquerade of death, is invoked by the four leaders of the village's witches
against Mojagbe. The masquerade opens its face to the king, a taboo - but he remains unshaken.

Genre of the play

The genre projected in this play by the playwright is tragedy. And tragedy (from the Greek: τραγῳδία,
tragōidia is a genre of drama based on human suffering and, mainly, the terrible or sorrowful events that
befall the main character.Traditionally, the intention of tragedy is to invoke an accompanying catharsis,
or a "pain [that] awakens pleasure,” for the audience.

Justifications of the play

2
1) The Eponymous/apt title: Title matters a lot when picking a play for a performance. This is because
the title is another means to draw the audience's attention. Especially when the title is apt. It has been
proven that so many people fell for the title first. And they judge a play by the title even before they see
the play. They tell if the play will be fascinating or not through the title of a play.

2) The plot of the play: The storyline matters a lot too. The play has a simple plot hence its simplicity for
good comprehension by readers and eventually, the audience too.

3)The areas of spectacles: The play gives room for spectacles since some theatre lovers are not moved
again with lines rendition alone, but by the action and some certain things that will beat their
imaginations and make them marvel....

4) The sociological relevance of the play: The play Mojagbe clearly speaks about the golden age. The
period when people are looking for excessive power and also the misuse of the power which is a major
problem that could be likened to Nigeria politics. And the play tries to tell us the repercussions of what
will happen to any leader whose intentions are to lead and not to serve. King Mojagbe can be likened to
Sani Abacha (gcfr) former president of Nigeria. Who was later brought down by a woman and also king
Mojagbe who was penetrated through Motun.

5) Crew members acceptability: We considered crew members acceptance because these are the
creative minds that will rub minds together to make the play comes alive. So since they all said they are
cool with it. This shows that they will be ready to work and we can achieve our goal. The play calls for
collaboration in its achievement as a performance on stage. The entire group members will have to
make deep researches on the setting of the play and every detail to ensuring the right interpretation on
stage.

6) The settings of the play: Setting in theatre is the geographical and periodical allocation of the actions.
Mojagbe by Ahmed Yerima is set in Nigeria(South West) in around 19th century. The action of the play is
set in Oyo, Ibadan. Consequently, the once united and revered Oyo Empire began to disintegrate in the
wake of Alaafin Maku‟s ascension to the throne of Alaafin. Maku succeeded Aole. The disintegration
begins to manifest when Afonja, the Aare Ona Kankanfo decides to have his own autonomy and refuses
allegiance to the Oyo kingdom. It is a turbulent and critical time. It is at this time that Oba Aderemi
Mojagbe of a neighbouring town to Oyo also decides to secede from the stranglehold of Oyo kingdom.

7) The play is written by popular playwright: Sometimes play is been picked because of the love you
have for that particular playwright. And also some theatre lovers who are our audience sometimes look
at the playwright that wrote a play before they could buy the tickets towards the production period.
And when they see that the name is strange they try to change their mind that they won't be present for
the play.

8) The play gives room for total theatre: Total Theatreencompasses the use of the African unique traits
in the making of a production. The total theatre approach embodies the use of dialogue, music, dance,
incantations, proverbs, chants, pantomimic dramatization, spectacles, and all other creative theatrical
elements in the actualization of the performance. The combination of these various elements hopes to
improve the audience's disposition as well as creating a beautiful backdrop of the performance as one
that entertains, educate and inform.
