PLAY LEVEL

Play level divided into:

sensorimotor, symbolic, imaginative, social play (dr.Luh)

Cognitive (play with object) and social (mba mita)

I. Sensorimotor play
Sensorimotor play refers to the activity a child does when she learns to use her
muscles through repetitive movements.
o Infants spend many of their waking hours in sensorimotor play. You see them
explore objects by turning them, pressing, poking, and prodding.
o Toddlers demonstrate their sensorimotor skills when they dump toys or practice
jumping.
o Preschoolers engage in this form of play when stirring sand, patting playdough, or
pouring water

II. Social Play

III. SOCIODRAMTIC PLAY
Sociodramatic play is the term used to describe how these two types of play (play with object
and play with people) come together. Sociodramatic is recognized as the highest level of
dramatic play (Christie, 1982) because it requires the combination of social and dramatic play
skills. Sara Smilansky (1968) describes 6 elements of play which must be present in order for
play to be considered sociodramatic. The elements are listed below.
1. Imitative role play
2. Make-believe in regard to objects
3. Make-believe in regard to actions and situations
4. Interaction
5. Verbal communication
6. Persistence
