FURTHER REFLECTIONS ON THE NUMBER PLANE SOLUTIONS

TASK 1 Using a graph

Reflect A(4, 3) across the line x = 3. A(2, 3)

Reflect B(0, –2) across the line y = x. B(−2, 0)

Reflect C(4, 1) across the line y = −x. C(−1, −4)

Reflect D(–3, –4) across the x-axis and then across the y-axis. D(3, 4)

TASK 2 Without a graph

a Reflect A(11, –5) in the line y = x. b Reflect B(–20, 7) in the line y = −x.

If you reflect in the line y = x the coordinates If you reflect in the line y = x the coordinates
swap places. swap places and change sign.

A(−5, 11) B(−7, 20)

c Reflect C(17, 0) in the line y = x. d Reflect D(–9, –25) in the x-axis then in the y-
axis.
C(0,17)
If you reflect in the x-axis, the y-coordinate
changes sign. If you reflect in the y-axis, the
x-coordinate changes sign.

D(9,25)
e Reflect E(5, –2) in the line y = x then in the f Reflect F(−3, 5) in the line y = −x then in the
line y = −x. line y = x.

E(−5, 2) F(3, −5)

Questions e and f result in the same change to the coordinates so changing the order of two reflections
does not change the overall transformation.
