Sonnet#18
Poem by William Shakespeare

Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?

Thou art more lovely and more temperate:

Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,

And summer’s lease hath all too short a date:

Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,

And often is his gold complexion dimmed;

And every fair from fair sometime declines,

By chance, or nature’s changing course, untrimmed:

But thy eternal summer shall not fade,

Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st;

Nor shall Death brag thou wander’st in his shade

When in eternal lines to time thou grow’st:

So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,

So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Through my analysis on the Sonnet#18, I can evaluate that this conforms the literary
functions and standards of a poem. And as it is one of the most famous poems of William
Shakespeare. He used words that are not as difficult to understand but quite meaningful as it is
used in a way that it expresses his feelings about the summer day. He also made it so that it all
lines ends with very common rhyme like the “dimmed” and “untrimmed”, the “day” and “may”
making it so wonderful to hear and read.

According to Nemerov, H. (2023), poetry is literature that uses words chosen and
arranged for their meaning, sound, and rhythm to elicit a focused imaginative awareness of
experience or a particular emotional response. Making the Sonnet#17 of William Shakespeare
truly one of the best-known poems out there.
