The word "Greece" has its origin in the
Latin term "Graecia," which was used
by the Romans to refer to the land
inhabited by the Greeks. The Latin
term, in turn, is believed to be derived
from the Greek word "Graikoi," which
was the name the Greeks used to
identify themselves.

is Hellas or Hellada, and its official
name in the European Union is the
Hellenic Republic, (Helliniki
Dimokratia).
