CHAPTER 1

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Mental Stability; an individual ‘s emotional, psychological, and social well-being. In

which has a great impact on how human ‘s think, feel, and act. It also helps determine

how they handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. “Hell, and madness; grace and

sanity: the true biblical basis for mental health”, Pauline Holmes, PhD. Humans

encounter environmental horrors that leaps to creating irreversible damage in an

individual ‘s thinking, mood and behavior. June 21, 2018, Philippines officially signed a

law (Republic Act no. 11036) that aspires to enhance integrated mental health services,

it’s promotion, protection to the mentally-ill and establishment for Philippine Mental

Health Council. Based on the results of an online survey conducted by Premier Value

Provider Inc. (PVP) from May 5 to May 16, a notable percentage of the respondents

reported experiencing critical levels of stress is 15%, 29% for anxiety, and for depression

is 29%. “Millennials and Gen Z ‘s were most affected,” the survey, published on May 21,

as indicated. There are a lot of factors that take place at this grossing rate; 1) the value of

strong family relationships especially between parents and child, (2) the significance of

modulating the youth’s involvement in peer groups, (3) the danger of anomalous and

risky lifestyles, (4) the importance of access to guidance counsellors and professionals,

and (5) the jeopardy of having suicidal peers .In abidance to the World Health

Organization (WHO), unhealthy mental condition is a silent killer and it’s about time to

set aside blockades, to get over the stigma and be informed about mental health not any

minute longer. Citing a 2017 World Health Organization report, Rep. Rida Robes of San

Jose del Monte, Bulacan said eight in every 100,000 Filipinos commit suicide. Of this

figure, six are males, while two are females, aged 15 to 29 years old. Robes said the study

8
allocated the increase in suicide cases to social media, changing lifestyle and lack of

family and community support, which led to a convergence of “risk factors” like social

disconnection and weakening of “helpful factors” such as genuine relationships and

healthy lifestyles. According to William J. Clinton, “Mental Illness is nothing to be

ashamed of, but stigma and bias shame us all.”

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

17-20% of adult Filipino go through psychiatric disorders while 10-15% of Filipino

children ages 5 to 15 suffer from mental health problems and mental health illnesses are

the third most common forms of morbidity for Filipinos in accordance with National

Statistics Office (NSO). As attested by National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI),

most of the people who live with mental health illnesses have at some point been blamed

and illegally discriminated for their condition, with no justice, this is the unwieldy power

that stigma holds. Due of the fact that this dilemma is still present the purpose of the

study is to asses, evaluate and describe the intellectuality of Grade 11 Students from

Montessori De San Ildefonso concerning to the said topic.

This study aims to evaluate the knowledge of Grade 11 Students in the neighborhood of

mental health illnesses.

The researchers aim to show:

 What comes to the Grade 11 Student ‘s minds when they hear the word

“Mental Health”?

 What is the importance mental health awareness?

 What activities can help aid the promotion of student’s mental health and

wellbeing?

 What are the effects of stigma and does it continue up to this generation?

9
SCOPE AND LIMITATION

This study shows the insights of Grade 11 Students to provide adequate information

concerning mental health and how being an intellectual and aware student affects their

lifestyle and the people surrounding them. This study involves the demographic profile

and private information of the students such as name, age, gender and section.

The researcher limited the study to… Grade 11 Students enrolled in the first semester of

school year 2020-2021 of Montessori De San Ildefonso. Each of the respondents was

given a questionnaire via google forms to answer. The respondents are selected using

Random Sampling to prevent biases.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study redounds to the society considering the awareness of students concerning

mental health in which plays a vital role at present time. Assessing the knowledge of

students helps the adults to come up with conventional approach and unerring solution.

Through this study, the researchers will know how aware is Grade 11 students regarding

an individual’s mental health and its effects. This study aims to help the following:

 Students- They are the ones who are predominantly involved in this study.

This study will be helpful to them to become mindful of the things they do not

know about mental health.

 Parents- This study can help the parents to handle and guide their children

when it comes to this matter.

 Teachers- They are the coordinators. This study will be beneficial to the

teachers because knowing the insights of their students regarding mental

10
health will be their lead to cultivate them. Through this research, teachers may

purposefully uncover how they can be a great help.

 Government- This study can help the government to take measures in

implementing activities and programs that correspond to mental health.

 Future researchers- The future researchers can make use of this for their

research or use this as a valid related literature that imparts useful facts only.

RESEARCH HYPOTHESES

This study aims to determine and evaluate the knowledge of the students in the

neighborhood of mental health problems thus there is no definite relationship of the

respondent’s sociodemographic profile to the awareness impact and intellectuality to

mental health illnesses. The responses you will see below are based on the views and

intuitions of the researcher concerning the questions above:

(1) The researchers hypothesize that they will define mental health as an individual’s

psychological state and emotional being.

(2) The researchers hypothesize that mental health awareness plays a vital role in an

individual’s live that impacts their thinking, behavior and socializing.

(3) The researchers hypothesize that physical exercise, meditation and good quality of

sleep contributes greatly to aiding an individual’s general well-being.

(4) The researchers hypothesize that stigma increases emotional and physical violence as

it can worsen an individual’s mental state as well as it makes them reluctant for help.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

11
(Fitzpatrick, 2008), aaccording to the Canadian sociologist Erving Goffman, the term

‘stigma’ describes the ‘situation of the individual who is disqualified from full social

acceptance. He recognized that shifts have occurred in the kinds of disgrace that arouse

concern. The ascendancy of a culture of victimhood has encouraged people to embrace

labels, that would once have been considered stigmatizing, as badges of status and

entitlement.

"Legal Issues in Psychology" at the 1977 Annual Convention of the American

Psychological Association and at a symposium on "Social Science Information and the

Legal Process" at the 1978 Annual Convention of the Public Society. This was first

developed in the Greeks by a German Psychiatrist Emil Kräpelin (1856-1926). He

published a comprehensive system of psychological disorders that focused on a series of

symptoms indicative of a physiological underlying cause. John B. Watson (1878-1958)

rejected introperspective methods and sought to restrict psychology to experimental

laboratory methods. B.F. Skinner, sought to give ethical grounding to behaviorism,

relating it to mental health. It is known that it is difficult for young people to access

mainstream mental health services, particularly due to the stigma that remains associated

with mental health issues. An evaluation of mental wellbeing provides you a full picture

of your emotional condition. It also explores how well you can think, reason, and recall.

It is crucial to have emotional and mental health because it is a vital part of your life and

affects your feelings, behaviors and emotions. Being emotionally stable can promote

efficiency in activities. It mainly focused with the mental health of youth or the students

and it also tackled that behavior is also related to mental health which is greatly

connected to this research. With this analysis, the researchers decided to adapt the said

topic.

12
In this study, the conceptual frame had been conceptualized to deal respondent's socio

demographic profile as to see whether if it is a factor affecting their awareness in mental

health.
