Rectangular Coordinates is much more accurate SOLUTION:

method of plo ng which is an en rely mathema cal
solu on to the problem of plo ng. a. Obtain the quadrant bearings of the line base
on the given table and drawing
The coordinates of
A (0.0, 0.0), those of Line:
B are (+34.6, +20.0), AB =N 30° E ;being in Q4
while those of C are
(-10.0,15.0). The x BC =180°-110°
BC =S 70° E ;being in Q4
coordinate is always
given first before CD =225°-180°
the y coordinate. CD =S 45° W ;being in Q3

DE =360°-295°
DE =N 65° W ;being in Q
Line AB can are given by N 60° E and 40.0m
respec vely. It can be plo ed using the protractor and
scale, but accuracy is not guaranteed. But calcula ng
the x and y coordinates of the line will be more accurate
because all people see the same dimensions.

In the figure the x coordinate of the line AB is:

𝐴𝐵 = 𝐴𝐵 sin 60°

𝑨𝑩𝑿 = 𝟑𝟒. 𝟔𝟒𝒎

And the y coordinate of the line AB is

𝐴𝐵 = 𝐴𝐵 cos 60°

𝑨𝑩𝒀 = 𝟐𝟎𝒎

CALCULATION OF COORDINATES b. Form a right triangle in each line to get the x

and y coordinate
METHOD 1. USING QUADRANT BEARINGS 𝐿𝐼𝑁𝐸 = 𝐿𝐼𝑁𝐸 sin 𝜃
𝐿𝐼𝑁𝐸 = 𝐿𝐼𝑁𝐸 cos 𝜃
1. The following data refers to an open compass
traverse ABCDE. The rectangular coordinates PARTIAL COORDINATES
LINE
of each sta on are required: DEPARTURE LATITUDE

BC X2 65.78 Y2 -23.94
BEARING
LINE LENGTH CD X3 -57.98 Y3 -57.98

DE X4 -28.28 Y4 13.19
AB 50 m 30°
BC 70 110°
CD 82 225°

DE 31.20 295°

𝐿𝐴𝑇 = −25.4

c. Compute for the Total Coordinates of the SOLUTION:

Lines
a. Compute for the Par al departures using the
LINE TOTAL DEP concept of the whole bearing circle.
AB X1 25.0 b. Compute for the Total departure
BC X1+X2 25.0+65.78 c. The algebraic sum of the departures and
la tudes should be equal to the last sta ons of
CD X1+X2+X3 25.0+65.78-57.98
DE X1+X2+X3+X4 25.0+65.78-57.98 the total departure and la tudes of the lines.

METHOD 2. USING WHOLE CIRCLE BEARINGS

BEARING
LINE LENGTH
(from +y axis)
AB 50 m 30°
BC 70 110°
CD 82 225°
DE 31.20 295°

Considering the Bearing from +y axis and Azimuth

from North the rela onship between its quadrant
bearing is

sin 𝐴𝑧𝑖𝑚𝑢𝑡ℎ = sin 𝑄𝑢𝑎𝑑𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝐵𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔

cos 𝐴𝑧𝑖𝑚𝑢𝑡ℎ = cos 𝑄𝑢𝑎𝑑𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝐵𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑛𝑔

The sign conven on of the following will s ll be based

of the loca on of the line in the quadrant system.
