HISTORY

 The name Camiguin is derived from the native word Kamagong, a

species of ebony tree that thrives near Lake Mainit in the province
of Surigao del Norte, the region from which the earlier inhabitants of the
islands, the Manobos, came. Kamigin, the local language of Camiguin,
is the northernmost variant of the Manobo languages.

 The island of Camiguin is believed to first have been inhabited by

the Manobo people of Surigao del Norte, as evidenced by the distinctly
connected language between the two groups.
 On July 4, 1946, the Philippines gained
independence from the US. Camiguin was then part
of Misamis Oriental. In 1958, it became a sub-
province. It was made into a separate province on
June 18, 1966, and formally inaugurated in 1968
GEOGRAPHY
 The province consists primarily of Camiguin Island, as well as a few
other surrounding minor islets including:
 White Island, about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) west of the town
of Mambajao
 Mantigue Island, about 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) south of Mambajao.
 Camiguin Island is a pearl-shaped island with an area of
approximately 238 km2 (92 sq mi).
ADMINISTRATIVE DIVISION
Camiguin comprises five municipalities, which are further subdivided into a total of 58 barangays.
LOCAL
GOVERNMENT
DEMOGRAPHICS
 The population of Camiguin in the 2015 census was 88,478 people, with a
density of 370 inhabitants per square kilometre or 960 inhabitants per square
mile.
 The people of Camiguin are called Camiguingnon or Camiguinon
ECONOMY
 The economy is based upon fishing and farming, with copra providing
the greatest income contribution. Lanzones has since then became the
main agricultural product of the island province. Other agricultural
products are abaca, rice, mangoes and other fruit trees. The growing
tourism industry has improved the economy of the province. Small
cottage industries have increased in number to accommodate the influx of
visitors.
CULTURAL FESTIVAL
LANZONES FESTIVAL
 Each year in the third week of October, a festival is held to
celebrate the Lanzones (locally called bwahan/buahan), a
small grape-sized tropical fruit grown all over the island.
Lanzones grown in Camiguin is considered to be the
sweetest. The unique flavor is due to the richness of the
volcanic soil. The week-long Lanzones Festival is one of
numerous colorful events in the Philippines.
TRANSPORTATION
 Both Cebu Pacific and Philippine
Airlines serve daily flights from Mactan Cebu
International Airport or from Ninoy Aquino
International Airport (NAIA) to Camiguin
Airport and vice versa.
 A Super Shuttle Roro transports passengers
daily from Camiguin's Port of Balbagon
to Bohol's Port of Jagna and vice versa.

• Visitors may fly to Laguindingan Airport in Cagayan de Oro

City in Misamis Oriental province, the gateway to Northern
Mindanao.
• From the airport, a shuttle ride ferries visitors to the Agora
Bus Terminal in Cagayan de Oro.
• Eastbound buses take visitors to the port of Balingoan,
Misamis Oriental in about two hours. The ferries to Benoni
port take just over an hour (depending on weather
conditions) and have more scheduled trips as it takes
passengers closer to Mambajao. The time between trips
varies during the day and runs from 4:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Katibawasan Falls is located at the foot of Mt.
Timpoong and rises some 250 feet in height,
equivalent to a 25-storey building.
The Ardent Hot Springs are one of real highlites on Camiguin
Island! They are located only 10 minutes or 4 km by motor bike
from the tourist beaches in Agoho and Yumbing, in the
mountainside of the famous Hibok - Hibok Volcano, which
supplies the hot and crystal clear water.
Sto. Nino Cold Spring is essentially a swimming hole in the middle of
the jungle. This manmade structure is fortified with cement floors, walls,
and steps- just like a pool. But the water comes from a natural source
deep in the ground. It’s the best of both worlds with no chemicals to
harm your skin.
Tuasan Falls is located in Catarman on Camiguin Island.
From the main tourist area of Mambajao, it’s approximately a 30-minute
drive to reach Tuasan Falls Camiguin.
Burias Shoals is a natural reef paradise like you’ve never
seen before. Instead of one flat bed of coral on the bottom of
the ocean floor, this reef is sprawled across slopes and steep
walls where large communities of colorful fish swim all day.
The black, yellow, red, and white coral varieties create a
colorful wonderland everywhere you turn. Look closely and
you’ll see camouflaged wildlife like snappers, clownfish,

• BURIAS SHOALS tiger fish, puffer fish, eels, crabs, and more.
Hikers come from all over in attempts to climb Mt.
Hibok Hibok, also known as Catarman Volcano. This
active volcano is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire and
has a history of eruptions that once wiped out a whole
community.
To reach the summit, you’ll hike 3-5 hours and be
rewarded with amazing views of Camiguin, as well as
neighboring islands such as Bohol and Siquijor. There
are also 6 hot springs on the mountain with hot and
cold pools to relax your tired muscles.
Mt. Vulcan
A less intense but equally interesting hike to
choose is on Mt. Vulcan. This ultra religious
country loves anything to do with Catholicism
and therefore the hike here is called Stations of
the Cross and introduces you to 14 Roman
Catholic Stations of the Cross. Basically, these
are 14 events that happened when Jesus was
crucified that you will see during your hike
randomly placed in the forest. It’s quite
interesting.
BURA SODA WATER SWIMMING POOL

You’ve never experienced anything like

swimming in a pool of bubbling, fizzing
soda water like you’ll find here in
Camiguin.
You can thank the volcanic springs of
Bura whose natural activity creates this
sparkling water to create pure pools in
which to swim, dive, and horse around
GIANT CLAM NURSERY

Kaliba Beach is home to a Giant Clam Conservation and

Ocean Nursery where 2,600 clams are thriving. There are
9 different species of clams on this earth, 7 of which you
can find here.
Get in the water where you’ll find rows of clams lined up
like little underwater soldiers as far as you can see. With
the assistance of a guide, you can pick up a giant clam to
have a closer look. It’s a really educational day and an odd
once-in-a-lifetime experience you won’t forget.
3 kilometers away from the island of
Camiguin, is Mantigue Island where you
can explore the sandy paths through the
jungle or walk down bamboo bridges
while keeping an eye out for birds,
monkeys and lizards as you go. This
island is quite unspoiled as it’s protected
by the government.

MANTIGUE ISLAND
The eruption of Mt. Vulcan Daan in the 1870’s drove
this cemetery filled with the remains of local
underwater. Today, their tombs and skeletons still rest in
this spot, marked by a large cross on top of the water.
In the afternoon, the water is shallow and makes for the
best time to go snorkeling. As you snorkel, you’ll see
tombs and crosses covered in moss and feel the eerie
ghostly feeling knowing your swimming over skeletons.
There are a few schools of fish that have made this area
their home and love to feed on the mossy tombs.
CAMIGUIN
AVIATION
Get a bird’s eye view of the island by
hopping in a little Cessna plane at
Camiguin Aviation. The professional
pilots will take you on the ride of your
life all around the island where you’ll
Hollywood-film style views.
You’ll get up close and personal with the
mouth of the volcano, aerial views of
offshore islands, and unchartered jungles.
