EASTERN VISAYAS

• It is composed of three main islands, Leyte, Samar, and Biliran.

• It consists of six provinces it consists of six provinces, one


independent city and one highly urbanized city namely, Biliran,
Eastern Samar, Leyte, Northern Samar, Western Samar, Southern
Leyte, Ormoc City, and Tacloban. The Highly Urbanized City of
Tacloban is the Eastern Visayas Regional Center (EVRC)

Eastern Visayas lies in the east-central section of the
Philippines archipelago. It is bounded on the east
and north by the Philippine Sea with the San
Bernardino Strait separating Samar island from
southeastern Luzon; On the west by the Camotes and
Visayan seas; and on the South by the Bohol Sea
with the Surigao Strait separating Leyte island from
northwestern Mindanao.

Climate
• There are two types of climate prevailing in the region under the Corona
System of classification: TYPE II and TYPE IV

• TYPE II CLIMATE - is characterized by having no dry season but a


pronounced maximum rainfall from November to January.

• TYPE IV CLIMATE - has an even distribution of rainfall the year round a


short period of dry season that can be observed starting February up to May.

Language
• The main languages spoken are CEBUANO and WARAY-
WARAY.
• A third language known as INABAKNON is spoken on the
island of Capul in Northern Samar.
• Some claim the existence of another speech variety known as
SAGUL spoken on the island of Biliran.

Tourist Attractions
San Juanico Bridge

• Connects Samar and Leyte and is considered as the longest bridge in


the Philippines.

Santo Nino Shrine and Heritage

• One of the 29 presidential rest houses, was also built by the late
President Marcos.

The Leyte Landing Memorial

• Is located in Palo, Leyte. It was built to commemorate and give


tribute to General Douglas McArthur for fulfilling his promise of
returning to the Philippines after the Japanese occupied the country.

Festivals
• PINTADOS DE LEYTE - is a celebration of the Leytenos of their way of
life before Spain conquered the country. The festival reflects their religion,
epics, indigenous music, and other traditions.

• LINGGANAY FESTIVAL - was based on the legend of the town’s golden


bell that was thrown into the deepest part of the river to prevent Moro
pirates from getting their hands on the bell.

• Other festivals celebrated in the region include the Sinulog Ha Malitbog,


Karayapan Festival, Sanggutan Festival, Pahoy-Pahoy Festival, Manoglaya
Festival, and the Bagulan Festival.

Tinikling, a famous dance in the Philippines, originated from
Leyte. The dance was based on the movement of the tinkling
birds as they dodged the traps set by farmers and walked
between grasses and branches.

The music of the Waray is mostly ballads. Examples of these


are the Dandansoy and the Iroy nga Tuna.

• BINAGOL -this unique dessert is made from grated coconut, sweetened

Provinces
Biliran
Is bounded on the north by the Samar Sea; on the
east by Western Samar; on the west by Visayan Sea;
and the south by Carigar Bay. It occupies a land area
of 555. 42. sq. km.

Biliran has 8 municipalities. The total number of


barangays in the province of 132.

Languages
• The inhabitants of Biliran primarily of Biliran primarily speak
CEBUANO and WARAY.

• Cebuano is spoken by 57.79% of the population while Waray is spoken


by 48.80%.

• The majority of the residents also speak and understand Tagalog and
English.

Eastern Samar
Covers a total area of 4,660.47 square kilometers (1,799.42 sq mi)
occupying the eastern Section of Samar Island in the Eastern Visayas
region. The province is bordered to the north by Northern Samar and to
the west by Samar. To the east lies the Philippine Sea, part of the vast
Pacific Ocean, while to the south lies the Leyte Gulf. Because it faces the
Philippine Sea of the Pacific Ocean, Eastern Samar suffers heavily from
powerful typhoons.

Eastern Samar has 22 municipalities and 1 city. The total number of


barangays in the province is 597.

Northern Samar
• It is 733 Kilometers away from Manila by land. Of which about 52%
percent is covered by forest and 42% is classified as alienable and
disposable.

• The terrain is very rugged with low-flying river valleys and hills crossing
one another

• The province falls under the intermediate type climate, which has no
distinct dry and wet seasons.

Tourist Attractions of Northern Samar
• Capul Lighthouse Location
Capul Island, is one hour by boat from Allen, Northern Samar,247 km.
from Tacloban City. Description: The lighthouse was constructed by the US
Army Corps and engineers. This is situated at the northernmost point of the
island and serves as the guidepost for traveling vessels. The big guns once
mounted there were intended to support the ashpan plans. It was the
Japanese Imperial Navbars grand design and last desperate assault to
destroy the American Landings at Leyte Gulf.

Batag Lighthouse
Location: Brgy.Marubay,Laoang, 51 kms.from Catarman; accessible by
motorboat from Rawis. Description: Magnificent natural rock formation
made more beautiful by the Maydolong landscape aficionados

• Church of the Immaculate Conception
Location: Guiuan, Eastern Samar Description: A 16th-century church with its
entire structure still preserved including old relics of “Santos”, hand-carved
altars, and doors.

Guitagican Beach
Location: Barangay Santa Maria in the town of Borongan. Description: A 2-
kilometer long beautiful white beach ideal for surfing and swimming.

Divinuvo Island
Location:A 3-sq.kilometer island in Brgy.Lalawigan, Borongan Description:It
has a crystal-clear water,white beach, swaying palm trees, multi-colored
fishes and corals beneath;best suited for scuba diving and swimming.

Delicacies of Northern Samar
Northern Samar is home to many sweet delicacies, including the Suman
Latik
which is served for breakfast, snacks, and special occasions. It’s a delicacy
from Northern Samar made of peanuts, rice crispies, and calamay. A light
and delightful snack. Hard to put down once you start munching on.

the de Guzman Family, a native of Cavite province.

Samar
is an island in the visayas, within central Philippines and the third largest island in
the country. The island is divided into three provinces: samar
province, northen samar and eastern samar. Samar is an easternmost island in
visayas. The island is separated from leyte by the Juanico strait, whichat its
narrowest point is only 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) across. This strait is crossed by the
San Juanico bridge. Samar lies southeast of the bicol Peninsula on Luzon, the
country’s largest island; the San bernardino strait separated the two. To the south
of samar is the leyte gulf, the site of the battle of leyte gulf, one of the most
decisive naval battles during the second world war. The gulf opens out into the
philippines Sea, found to the east of samar and is part of the Pacific Ocean.

• LANGUAGES:
• Residents of Samar are mostly Waray, the sixth largest cultural-linguistic
group in the country. 90.2 percent of the household population peaks the
Waray-Waray language, while 9.8 percent also speak Cebuano 8.1 percent
Boholano 0.07 percent Tagalog, and 0.5 percent other languages

• CLIMATE:
• Type 1 Climate, which occurs mainly in the western part of Luzon and
Visayas, including Metro Manila, has two pronounced seasons: dry, from
November to April, and wet from May to October

Leyte
Is especially prone to typhoons because of its geography facing toward the
Pacific Ocean.

The people of Leyte are divided into two main groups primarily by language.
In the west and south are Cebuanos while in the north is the Waray-Waray.

Traditional art forms of the province are pottery of Tanauan and Leyte
basketry weaving of Carigara.
Based on statistics Leyte is the largest producer or exportation of Abaca in
the Philippines

Southern Leyte
Southern Leyte was a sub-province of Leyte until it was made into an
independent province.

Southern Leyte Includes Limasawa where the first mass of the Roman Catholic
was Held and considered the birthplace of Roman Catholicism in the Philippines

It has 18 Municipalities 1 city and 500 Barangays

Southern Leyte’s Topography is characterized by relatively flat lands along
the coastal areas which gives way to rugged and mountainous lands.

Southern Leyte is also one of the top exporters of agricultural products in


the Philippines. It forms an important part of the Island transportation
system of the country with ferries transporting people and goods between
Lioan and Surigao Del Norte in Mindanao.
