Northern Mindanao Region


• Northern Mindanao is an administrative region in the Philippines,
designated as Region X and occupies a total land area of 14,193
square kilometers. It comprises five provinces:
• Bukidnon, Camiguin, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental,
and Lanao del Norte, and two cities classified as highly urbanized, all
occupying the north-central part of Mindanao island, and the island-
province of Camiguin. The regional center is Cagayan de Oro. Lanao
del Norte was transferred to Northern Mindanao from Region
XII (then called Central Mindanao)
• Geography
Northern Mindanao has a total land area of 2,049,602 hectares
(5,064,680 acres).[5] More than 60% of Northern Mindanao's total land
area are classified as forest land. Its seas abound with fish and other
marine products.

• Climate
Rainfall in Northern Mindanao is evenly distributed throughout the
year. Its abundant vegetation, natural springs and high elevation
contribute to the region's cool, mild and invigorating climate.
Northern Mindanao is the 8th most populous region in the Philippines and 2nd in Mindanao (after Davao Region)
according to the 2015 Philippine Statistics Authority Census. The major urban area of Region X is Metro Cagayan de
Oro which includes Cagayan de Oro and some municipalities and cities of Misamis Oriental and Bukidnon.

The vast majority of the region's inhabitants descended from migrants from Cebu and Bohol. Some other inhabitants
are of Waray, Hiligaynon, Zamboangueño, Maranao and Tausug descent, while the autochthonous Bukidnons and
Manobos populate the inner highlands.

The predominant religion is Christianity, with Roman Catholicism forming 72% of the population and Protestants
forming a significant minority of 14%. The second predominant religion is Islam, forming 8% of the population.
• The region is composed of five provinces: Bukidnon, the island
province of Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental and
Misamis Oriental. It has two highly urbanized cities, Cagayan de Oro
and Iligan, that are administered independently from any province.
The provinces are further subdivided into seven component cities and
84 municipalities, with a total of 2,022 barangays. The regional center
is Cagayan de Oro.
How to get there
• The region has several points of entry. Major airports can be found in
Ozamis City and Cagayan de Oro. Also, with the exception of
bukidnon, all the provinces have seaports where passenger ships
regularly dock from different parts of the country.
• is a landlocked area whose name is derived from the local name for
highlander or a mountain dweller Bukidnon. It houses the country
second-highest point and it has a total land area of 829,378 hectares.

• Mount Dulang-dulang which rises to an elevation of 2938 meters


above sea level. Also worth mentioning is that the province also has
the Kitanglad Mountain Range which includes Mount Kalatungan,
with an elevation of 2860 meters, Mount Kitanglad with its 2899-
meter height, Mount Maagnaw with its 2742-meter elevation and
Mount Tuminungan with a recorded elevation of 2400 meters.
How to get there
• From Cagayan de Oro, Ceres Liner and Bachelor Express buses ply the
99-kilometers route to Malaybalay every hour.
• The Lumbia Airport which is found in Cagayan de Oro is the nearest
airport in Bukidnon. Domestics flights from coming manila, Cebu, and
Davao is being catered in this airport. From Cayagan de Oro you can
take a bus all the way to Bukidnon. You can also hire a van to reach
the place.
Bukidnon Tourist Attractions
Kampo Juan
This adventure park is known for its environmental advocacy. It made use of the areas no longer suited for
agriculture due to impossible terrain. Organic foods are offered here. The place is most famous for its anicycle
or bike on wire.

Sumalsag Cave
Sumalsag Cave is accessible in Brgy. Dalirig, Manolo Fortich. This cave may not be full of crystallized walls, the
river passing through it makes it really challenging. It has portions with very narrow paths wherein one may
crawl or walk like a duck.
Camiguin
capital: Mambajao
• Camiguin is an island province in the Philippines located in the Bohol Sea,
about 10 kilometres off the northern coast of Mindanao. It is
geographically part of Region X, the Northern Mindanao Region of the
country and formerly a part of Misamis Oriental province.

• Camiguin Island is a pearl-shaped island with an area of approximately 238


km2 (92 sq mi).[4] The island measures about 23 kilometres (14 mi) at its
longest and 14.5 kilometres (9.0 mi) at its widest breadth.[11] The island is
mountainous with the highest elevation reaching over 5,000 ft (1,500 m). It
is encircled by a national road with a length of about 64 kilometres (40 mi).
As of the August 1, 2007 census, the province has a 5th class income
classification with a population of 81,293.[12]
How to get there
• From Cagayan de Oro, one can opt to take a three-hour ferry ride
straight to Camiguin or travel by land to Balingoan and take a ferry
from there to the island.
• Camiguin has its own airport in Mambajao. Cebu Pacific offers
regular flights to the province. For travelers coming from Manila, its
either you make your way to Cagayan de Oro or Butuan City. There
are flights coming from Clark in Angeles City to Cagayan de Oro where
you can connect by bus and ferry, or by plane to Cagayan de Oro and
Camiguin like we did.
Tourist Attractions
• The Naked Temptress of Camiguin. The stunning White Island or
Medan Island is 10 minutes away from the northern coast of
Camiguin. There are boat rentals available for only PHP 450 in
Yumbing area near the check point. Some resorts also offer their own
day tours to visit this pristine, powdery paradise. You have to pay 50
PHP extra for the entrance. It’s popular to visit in the sunrise. Our
choice was visiting at lunch time and we were alone in the island for a
couple of hours. You can rent umbrellas in White Island for 150 PHP.
You can stay until 5 pm when White Island close until next day in the
sunrise.
GIANT CLAM SANCTUARY
• If you are a person who love to dive and see the wonders of the sea,
this is the best place for you! You’ll be able to experience diving
to see giant clams and their colorful seaworld. The entrance fee is
150 PHP.

MANTIGUE ISLAND
The Island of Mantigue is mesmerizing when you get off of the boat. The Island is beyond beauty
with its crystal clear waters, where you can also have a close encounter with corals and
fish even while riding a boat. There’s a wide variety of fish species that lives in the crystal clear
water surrounding the Island.
For visiting Mantigue you have to ride a boat from San Roque close to Benoni Ferry terminal that
will cost you 600 PHP maximum 6 people and it will take 15 minutes to get to Mantigue Island.
There is an enviromental fee 10 PHP and 50 PHP entrance fee for snorkeling. You can also rent
snorkeling gear in case you aren’t bringing your own.
HIBOK HIBOK ARDENT HOTSPRING

Nights in Camiguin can sometimes be cold and one way to chase it off is by having a quick dip in a warm
running water. This place is usually the best place to meet locals and other tourists. It’s only 3
kilometers far from the highway on the way to Yumbing and the entrance fee is 50 PHP. It’s a perfect
place for relaxing and we recommend as last stop during the day as we did.

STO. NIÑO COLD SPRING

In Camiguin, not only hot springs are available but cold springs too! Sto. Niño Cold Spring is a place
where you can swim for hours and enjoy the cool running water. The entrance fee costs 50 PHP.

SUNKEN CEMETERY

This place also made Camiguin famous. The sunken cemetery is represented by a huge cross of what
had been an old chapel. There, tourists can dive and explore what’s beneath it. The boat costs 150 PHP.
Misamis Occidental

• Area and Location

Misamis Occidental is located near the narrow strip of land linking


Northwestern Mindanao, to the North-central part of the island.
Covering a total area of 2,055.22 square kilometres (793.52 sq mi)[8],
the province is bounded on the northeast by the Mindanao Sea, east
by the Iligan Bay, southeast by the Panguil Bay, and the west by the
Zamboanga del Norte and Sur. Except along the coastal area, hilly and
rolling land characterized the provincial terrain. Towards the western
border, the terrain is particularly rugged.
Geographic Profile
• Because the province is virtually surrounded by bodies of water,
fishing is not surprisingly one of its main industries. Except along flat
coastal areas, the the terrain is generally hilly and rolling, becoming
rugged towards the west.
How to Get There
• Planes and ships leave Cebu for Ozamis on a regular basis. There is
also a boat that plies the route between Iligan and Ozamis daily,
Buses from Dipolog en route to Pagadian pass by the three cities of
Misamis Occidental as well.

Misamis Oriental

• Area and Location
The province is located along the northern coast of the island of
Mindanao. It is bounded by Macalajar Bay on the north, by Iligan Bay
on the west, by the provinces of Bukidnpn and Lanao del Norte on the
south and southwest, and by Agusan del Norte on the east.
Geographic Profile
Misamis Oriental has numerous bodies of water, including the Macajar
and Gingoog bays and by and the Cagayan de Oro River that flows from
rugged interior mountains. The climate is generally wet the whole year
round, but there is a period of maximum rainfall from November to
January.
How to Get There
• There are daily flights from Manila to Cagayan de Oro. And ships also
regularly ply the route to Misamis Oriental. Planes and ships bound
for the province are also available in Cebu, but operate less frequently

Canopy Walk Valencia

Using ropes harnesses, visitors can climb 70 meters up to the forest


canopy which can be explored by crossing a network of rope bridges.
Kagayha-an Festival

• This annual celebration is held on the feast day of the city’s patron,
Saint Augustine. It features a three-hour parade of civic-military
groups wearing colorful costumes.

This park has numerous attractions, including natural limestone
formations, aforest park, various wildlife including colorful fishes and
corals, and a number of caves one of which is the Splitnose bat cave.

• The place offers a panoramic view of Cagayan de Oro City. A day’s trek
away from the office is the 200-year-old balete tree landmark near
the Mahoganao Reservoir.
Lanao del Norte

Lanao del Norte is bounded on the north by Iligan Bay and Misamis Oriental,
on the east by Bukidnon, on the west by Panguil Bay and Zamboanga del Sur,
and on the south by Lanao del Sur and Illana Bay.

Lanao del Norte is a rugged province that ranges from the coastal shorelines
in the north to the high plateaus and mountains in the south. ... Lanao del
Norte covers a total area of 3,346.57 square kilometres (1,292.12 sq mi)
occupying the southwestern section of the Northern Mindanao region in
Mindanao.
How to Get There
Planes fly regularly from Manila to Cagayan de Oro City. From there
once can take a taxi to Iligan. Also, ships sail for Iligan via Dipolog
regularly.

Cathedral Falls

This beautiful waterfall got its name from the cathedral-like rock
formation over which it flowers.
Area and Location
Davao Region is the most populous region in Mindanao and the 7th
most populous in the country, with a total of 4,893,318 inhabitants in
2015. Davao City, its regional capital, is also the largest city in
Mindanao, with an area of 2,444 km2, the largest in the country and
one of the largest in the world, and has 1,632,991 inhabitants in 2015,
making it the fourth most populous city in the country and the most
populous city proper in the entire Visayas-Mindanao region. Davao
Metropolitan Area, the primary economic and urban build-up area in
the region, is also the most populous in the island and the third most
populous in the country, with about 2,274,913 inhabitants in that year.
Geographiic Profile
• Even before the Philippine independence in 1946, the entire region
was already a single province called Davao Province, with Davao
City serving as its capital. The province was one of the largest
provinces in the Philippines during that time, spanning more than
20,000 square kilometres (7,700 sq mi). It lasted from 1920 until
1967, when the province was split into three provinces in May
1967: Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur and Davao Oriental.[19] After the
division, Davao City was officially named its regional center.
People
• The major dialects spoken by the people of this region are Cebuano
and Hiligaynon, but B’laan, Waray, Maguindanao, Tagalog, Bagobo,
Manobo, and Mandaya are also spoken. As of 2007, the population in
the region was 4,156,653.
Political Profile
• Region XI, then known as Southern Mindanao, originally covered 6
provinces (Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao
Oriental, South Cotabato and Sarangani), and the cities
of Davao, Digos, Panabo, Tagum, Samal, General
Santos and Koronadal.[20] Surigao del Sur was moved to the newly
created region Caraga on February 23, 1995.
• On September 2001, Executive Order No. 36 was enacted which
reorganized the regions in Mindanao. Region XI, then known
as Southern Mindanao, was renamed Davao Region, and the
provinces of South Cotabato and Sarangani, and the cities of General
Santos and Koronadal were moved to Region XII.[20][21]
How to Get There
• There are two major airports in the region: the Davao International
Airport in Davao City and the airport in General Santos City. Most
airline companies fly passengers directly to the region from Manila.
Major shipping lines also service routes to the region, and one can
reach the region by land as well in the Pan-Philippine Highway.
Davao Oriental
capital: Mati
Area and Location

Davao Oriental is located at the southeastern portion of Mindanao


Island. It is bound by Agusan del Su and Surigao del Sur on the north;
by the Pacific Ocean, Davao del Sur, and Davao del Norte on the west;
and by the Philippine Sea on the south.
Geographic Profile
The eastern coast of Davao Oriental is dominated by the Pacific
Cordilleras. The rest of the province is composed of an uneven
distrtibution of plateaus, swamps, and lowlands. The rainy seasdon
here is short, with the maximum rainfall occurring in the months of
November and January.

Dahican Beach Mati City
If your beach can’t surpass or even just equal its alluring
deep blue sea and powdery white sand shore, you better
not try convincing us. Promise, this seven-kilometer
stretch facing the Pacific Ocean can be anyone’s perfect
beach getaway. It is known for its inviting powerful waves
which made it a surfing and skim-boarding hub in Davao
Region. The crescent-shaped coastline is also a sanctuary
for sea turtles. Dahican is also perfect to be viewed from
above via an ultra-light plane by the Mindanao Saga Flying
Club.
Aliwagwag Falls Cateel
• It is not just another curtain falls. It is more than that. This famous
falls is made up of more than 100 cascading waterfalls making it as
the country’s highest waterfalls. It is made up of rock formations
varying in shapes and sizes. The falls is located just 30-40 minutes
away from Cateel proper.
This towering piece of nature is not just for casual travelers but also
for thrill-seekers as the Aliwagwag Falls Eco Park offers 680-meter zip
line with a height of 55 meters from the ground and a monkey bridge.
I tried crossing its monkey bridge (for only P50) and it’s a hell of an
experience. Facing your fears, indeed, is always worth it.
Cape San Agustin Governor Generoso

• If your beach can’t surpass or even just equal its alluring deep blue
sea and powdery white sand shore, you better not try convincing us.
Promise, this seven-kilometer stretch facing the Pacific Ocean can be
anyone’s perfect beach getaway. It is known for its inviting powerful
waves which made it a surfing and skim-boarding hub in Davao
Region. The crescent-shaped coastline is also a sanctuary for sea
turtles. Dahican is also perfect to be viewed from above via an ultra-
light plane by the Mindanao Saga Flying Club.
San Victor Island Bagangga
• If you wish to have an island escapade, this island, should be in
everyone’s list of choices. It is just a quick five-minute boat ride from
Barangay San Victor in Bagangga. It is now a perfect island
destination, an example of resiliency as it was devastated by Typhoon
Pablo back in 2012.
Staying overnight is also perfect in the island as tents, aircon and non-
aircon rooms are available. The sounds of the waves can be your
lullabies at night. However, the island owner has yet to open its
restaurant but it offers cooking services for a minimal fee, you just
need to tell the island staff upon booking.
Pusan Point Caraga
• It’s a must visit. Who wouldn’t want to be in a place where the first
rays of the rising sun strike? Pusan Point is a 40-foot high rock
promontory which faces the Pacific Ocean. The Pusan Point Discovery
Center and Eco-Park’s attraction is a Jubilee Cross planted on the
rough edges of the point where the Pacific surf hits in giants,
especially during the monsoon season. Other features include
meditation, an amphitheater that can seat some 100 people, a 200-
square-meter swimming pool, a sundial and a two-story building that
houses the Science Discovery Center showcasing a planetarium and
other science-themed interactive sections.
Mt. Hamiguitan San Isidro


It’s the province gem of nature. This 6,000-hectare home of 1,403
species of fauna and flora owned the highly-coveted Unesco World
Heritage Site in 2014 and lately, as an ASEAN Heritage Park.

Its famous attraction is the 225-hectare pygmy forest, a field of bonsai


trees estimated to be century-old. Last year, it inaugurated the Eco-
Park and Interpretation Site wherein one to experience the Mt.
Hamiguitan.
Davao del Norte
capital: Tagum City
Area and Location
Davao del Norte is bounded on the north by Agusan del Sur, on the east
by Davao Oriental, on the west by Bukidnon, and on the south by
Davao del Sur and the Davao Gulf. The province has a total area of
8,129.75 square kilometers, making it the seventh largest province in
the country.
Geographic Profile
• Tagum has a total land area of 19,580 hectares (48,400 acres), which is
predominantly agricultural, and produces various kinds of crops
like coconut, rice, Cavendish banana, fruit trees like durian, lanzones and
other agricultural crops for non-commercial use.
• The city is strategically located at the northern portion of Southern
Mindanao and lies in the intersection of three major road network systems
namely: the Phil-Japan Friendship Highway, the Davao-Mati-Agusan road
and the soon to be completed Davao-Bukidnon road that connects the city
to other major destinations in the region and in the rest of Mindanao. With
this, the city serves as a vital economic crossroad not only for the province,
but for the entire Davao Region as well, linking Davao City to the northern
city of Butuan (in Agusan del Norte), to Mati (in Davao Oriental) and
the Surigao provinces.
How to Get There
• The city is located 55 kilometers north of Davao City, the main
economic and administrative center of Region XI. It takes about 1
hour and 30 minutes travel to Davao City. The city lies between 7°26′
N latitude and 125°48' E Longitude. It is bounded by the
Municipalities of Asuncion, New Corella, and Mawab on the
north, Maco on the east, and B.E. Dujali on the west. Carmen lies on
its southwestern borders, while it faces the Davao Gulf directly to the
south.

DAVAO PENAL COLONY

This penal colony has numerous attractions: a botanical garden, a lake


(Lake Imelda), a zoo, a forest where one can hunt small game,
numerous plantations (citrus, ramie, rubber and banana), and even the
Ingenious wood carvings by the prisoners.

Haguimit Falls
This waterfall is situated 2.8kms from the poblacion. The water drops
some 15 feet into a river.
Island Garden City of Samal
Samal Island
A paradise island of white-sand beaches, bountiful marine life, lush
vegetation, natural caves, and fresh water springs.

Talikud and Ligid Islands


An execellent spot for diving and snorkeling, as well for watching
whales, dolphins, and even dugongs.
Davao del Sur
capital: Digos
Area and Location
Davao del Sur is bounded by Davao City on the north; by the provinces
of Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and South Cotabato on the west; by the
Celebes Sea on the south; and by the Davao Gulf on the east.

Geographic Profile
The land is composed of rolling hills, white-sand beaches, fertile
valleys, and ridges.
How to Get There
You can reach Davao Del Sur by plane and by land. Flights from Manila
to Davao International Airport last for approximately two hours. From
the airport, you can go straight to the terminal and ride a bus to Digos,
the capital of Davao del Sur. Van rentals and airport transfers are also
available. Just contact your chosen hotel or resort to inquire about
airport transfers in advance.

Mt. Apo National Park
Towering 10,311 feet above sea level, Mt. Apo is the country’s highest
peak and is considered by many as the international mecca for
mountain climbing. It will take four days to climb to the top of this
imposing mountain, which is blessed with numerous springs,
waterfalls, and rivers as well as a wide variety of flora and fauna.

Mt. Carmel
This place was used for experimental farming projects and is the site of
a rubber plantation.
Piapi Hill
Piapi, Padada
A good place for camoing and sight seeing. From its summit, one can
have a good view overlooking Padada and Malalag Bay.

Seven Hills at Digos


Bagumbayan, Kiblawan
One can view the municipalty of Digos and its adjoining barangays from
the top of any of these hills.

This cascading waterfalls is located just below the feet of Mt. Apo.

Sibulan River is emerging as a new adventure destination in the Davao
region. Many of the locals come here to take a aprt in a new sport
called river tubings, wherein one rides an interior tube of a truck wheel
down the rough waters of the river.
Sarangani
capital: Alabel
Area and Location
Sarangani has a land area of 4,012.33 square kilometers. It is bound by
Sultan Kudarat on the west, South Cotabato on the north, Dvao del Sur
on the east, and the Celebes Sea on the south.

Geographic Profile
Flatlands, rolling hills, and mountains characterize Saeangani’s terrain.
The flatlands are found mostly in the coastal areas. All of the towns of
the province, except Malungon, are located in the coastal plains.
How to Get There
Access to Sarangani is via General Santos City. Planes From Manila and
other provinces land at the airport here while ships dock at the Makar,
Whar. From General Santos, the towns of Alabel, Maitum, Kiamba, and
Maasim are only a ride away via Koronadal through the General Santos-
Cotabato Road.

Pinol, Maitum
Prehistoric archaeological treasures such as anthropomorphic pottery
from 500 BC have been found in these caves.

Gumasa Resort Glan


This southern paradise situated on a hilly coastal barangay is said to be
the “Boracay of the South” because of its powdery white-sand beaches
lined with coconut trees.

This beautiful island boasts of blue lagoons and glistening white-sand
beaches set amidst the backrop of a tropical rainforest.
Siguel Maasim
There are numerous beach resorts in this ares, abound with mineral
rocks, marbles, and shells.

Tapat Maasim
The waters surrounding this area teem with schools of tropical fishes
and other marine life forms, making it ideal for scuba diving.

Tampat Shrine Maasim


This majestic shrine of the subordinate ruling sultanates of
Maguindanao contain ancient tombs that date back to the time of the
first settlers of Mindanao.
Davao City
Area and Location
Davao City is the province of Davao del Sur. It is bounded on the east by the
Davao Gulf, on the north by Davao Del Norte, and on the south and west by
Davao del Sur. The city is considered one of the largest in the world in terms
of land area, having a total of 1,121.25 square kilometers.

Geographic Profile
The terrain is characterized by rolling hills sloping down to fertile valleys.
Mountain ranges straddle the rest of the countryside. The climate here is
very ideal; in fact, the area is hardly ever visited by typhoons.
How to Get There
• By Air
• Philippine Airlines, Air Asia Philippines and Cebu Pacific fly to Davao from
Manila, Clark, Cebu, Bacolod, Iloilo, Zamboanga, Cagayan de Oro,
Dumaguete, Tacloban, Tagbilaran, Caticlan, Puerto Princesa and Siargao.
Meanwhile, Silk Air and Cebu Pacific connect the city to Singapore while Air
Asia links it to Kuala Lumpur.
• By Bus/Boat
• By bus, Philtranco and PP Bus Lines have daily trips from Pasay or Cubao to
Davao for an approximately 48 hours travel time. There are also regular bus
and van trips from Cagayan de Oro, Butuan, Mati, Surigao, Tagum, Surigao
City, Mangagoy, Davao, tang and various cities and towns in Mindanao.

weapons, and musical instruments as well as paintings, sculptures and
ceramics.

Colorful dagmay fabrics made from abaca fiber are woven here by
Mandaya women.

The Philippine Eagle Foundation


Malagos, Calinan
The place serves as a sanctuary and breeding center of eagles,
especially the Philippine Eagle or monkey-eating eagle, as well as other
birds and animals.
Lon Wa Buddhist Temple
Cabaguio Avenue
This Buddhist temple is considered the biggest temple in the whole of
Mindanao. Its houses a golden Buddha with a thousand hands that sits
stop a slab of Italian marble.

Magsaysay Park

This 2.8 hectare park has an amphitheater, a skating rink, restaurants
and bars, orchid and ornamental plant shops, a children’s play center, a
chapel, bike rentals, and souvenir shops.
Compostela Valley

Area and Location
Compostela Valley is bounded on the north by Agusan del Sur, on the
west by Davao del Norte, on the east and southeast by Davao Oriental,
and on the west and southwest by the Davao Gulf. It has a total land
are of 4,667.03 square kilometers.

Geographic Profile
