WHAT IS ABANTE BABAE?
The Abante Babae Movement
in the Philippines is a women's rights
advocacy group that works to
promote gender equality, women's
empowerment, and the advancement
of women's rights in various aspects
of Philippine society.
PRE-HISTORIC
ERA
In the pre-Hispanic era of the Philippines, women
held diverse and influential roles in society, including
leadership, healing, and commerce.

An example of this is the Babaylan, primarily a


female healer, who was highly regarded for her
healing skills and knowledge.

Pre-colonial societies placed a strong emphasis on


women's respect, instilling in men an early
appreciation of their worth and honor.

Philippine Revolution: while not exclusive to women,
many Filipino women actively participated in the
revolutionary movement KATIPUNAN against Spanish
colonial rule

Beaterio Movement: this movement established convents and
beaterios that provided education and shelter to women,

Role of Religious Orders: promoting women's education, healthcare,
and social welfare, advancing the rights and status of women in
Philippine society.
