INTERIORITY MOMENT

Prayer to the Holy Spirit (St. Augustine)

Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy.
Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy.
Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy.
Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy.
Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy.
Amen.

With one mind and one heart.

Intent upon God.

St. Augustine…Pray for us.

Salient Features
in the Life
of St. Augustine

Genie U. Pedrosa
Program Head, REED Dept.
• Augustine received a Christian education.
His mother had him signed with a cross and
enrolled among the catechumens. One when he
was very ill, he asked for baptism. But all
danger being soon passed, he deferred
receiving the sacrament, thus yielding to a
deplorable custom of the times. For nine years,
he was a member of Manichaeism.

• His twofold conversion (intellect and will)

was influenced by the following:
• Reading of Cicero’s Hortensius
• His meeting with St. Ambrose
• His reading of the Bible (particularly Rom.
13:13-14)

The famous conversion of
St. Augustine in the Garden
of Milan: He heard a voice
telling him: “tolle
lege…tolle lege…(take and
read).

Genie U. Pedrosa
Program Head, REED Dept.
St. Augustine took in his hand the
Sacred Scripture and uncovered the
text which led him to conversion.
“Let us conduct ourselves properly as
in the day, not in orgies and
drunkenness, not in promiscuity and
licentiousness, not in rivalry and
jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus
Christ, and make no provision for the
desires of the flesh.” Rom. 13:13-14

• After months of prayer and
reflection, Augustine, Adeodatus
and Alypius were baptized by St.
Ambrose in the Cathedral of Milan
on Easter Vigil, April 24/25 387.

• “Late have I loved You, beauty

so old and so new, late have I
loved You.”
-St. Augustine, Confessions

Once converted, Augustine and his
mother decided to return home to
Tagaste (Thagaste), but Monica would
never complete the trip. She fell ill
and died in Ostia, a city just outside of
Rome.
While Augustine and Monica were at Ostia, they talked one day about eternal life, and
together they experienced a vision of that joy.

Thinker and
Prolific Writer

Three Great Books:

• City of God – his masterpiece

in Philosophy and History
• Confessions – his
autobiographical work which
includes his threefold
confessions of his sins, faith and
praises of God
• De Trinitate – discusses the
Trinity in the context of the logos

Genie U. Pedrosa

He was a courageous defender of faith and spiritual
leader. He defended the Church against paganism and
heresies:
•Manichaeism – founded by Mane which
teaches that man’s spirit is
from God and his body is from evil
•Pelagianism – founded by Pelagius which
teaches that man’s freewill to do good is
enough to achieve salvation without God’s
grace
•Donatism – founded by Donatus, believed
that the validity of the sacraments depends
on the worthiness of the minister

INTERIORITY MOMENT

Prayer by Saint Augustine

I beg of You, my God, let me know You and

love You so that I may be happy in You. And
though I cannot do this fully in this life, yet let
me improve from day to day till I may do so to
the full. Let me know You more and more in
this life, that I may know You perfectly in
heaven.
Let me know You more and more here, so
that I may love you perfectly there, so that
my joy may be great in itself here, and
complete in heaven with You.
Genie U. Pedrosa
Program Head, REED Dept.
O Truthful God, let me receive the
happiness of heaven which You promise
so that my joy may be full. In the
meantime, let my mind think of it, let my
tongue talk of it, let my heart long for it,
let my mouth speak of it, let my soul
hunger after it, let my flesh thirst after it,
let my whole being desire it, until such
time as I may enter through death into
the joy of my Lord, there to continue
forever, world without end. Amen.

With one mind and one heart…intent

upon God.
