Spider How-To Writing
Lesson
Craft # one materials:
- 4four popsicle sticks per student
- white paint
-white yarn
- plastic spider rings
-glue

Craft # 1one directions


- Step one: glue four popsicle sticks in a star shaped
pattern
- step two: paint popsicle sticks white and allow time to
dry
- step three: Wind yarn around each popsicle stick, moving
from one popsicle stick to the one next to it and continue
around until you have made about five web strands.
- step four: attached a plastic spider ring to your web.

Explain to students that how-to writing provides steps and


directions regarding how to complete a task. Tell students
that you are going to create a craft together. Their job
is to try and remember the steps so they can write a
how-to piece based on their activity.

Craft # two materials:
- tootsie roll lollipop
-black pipe cleaners
- googly eyes
-glue

Craft # two directions


- Step one: grab a lollipop.
- step two: wrap four black pipe cleaners around the
lollipop stick.
- step three: bend all eight ends of the pipe cleaners so
that they resemble spider legs.
- step four: glue on googly eyes to the spider.

After students have completed the craft, provide them with


how-to writing paper and allow students to illustrate and
write directions for creating their spider craft. When
how-to is completed have students write their final copy
on the spider lined paper.
