Examples of Network Operating Systems

Windows 2000 Server was released on February 17, 2000 to replace Windows NT
4.0 and Windows 2000 offers many system-wide improvements over its predecessor. It
provides application development services as well as connectivity, file and storage
management enhancements, in addition to reliability, scalability, security, systems
management and Web integration improvements.

Windows Server 2003 is a server operating system produced by Microsoft and released on
April 24, 2003, about 18 months after the launch of the Windows XP operating system. It is
the successor to Windows 2000 Server and the predecessor to Windows Server 2008.

Windows Server 2008 is the third version of the Windows Server operating system
produced by Microsoft, based on Windows NT 6.0. It was released to manufacturing on
February 4, 2008, and reached general availability on February 27, 2008, about 13 months
after the launch of the Windows Vista operating system.

Windows Server 2008 R2 is the fourth version of the Windows Server operating system
produced by Microsoft and released as part of the Windows NT family of operating
systems. It was released to OEM hardware partners on July 22, 2009 and became generally
available on October 22, that year.

Windows Server 2012 is the fifth version of the Windows Server operating system by
Microsoft, as part of the Windows NT family of operating systems. It is the server version
of Windows based on Windows 8 and succeeds Windows 7-based Windows Server 2008
R2, released two years prior.

Windows Server 2012 R2 is the sixth version of the Windows Server operating system by
Microsoft, as part of the Windows NT family of operating systems. It was unveiled on June
3, 2013 at TechEd North America, and released on October 18, 2013.

Windows Server 2016 is the seventh release of the Windows Server operating
system developed by Microsoft as part of the Windows NT family of operating systems. It
was developed concurrently with Windows 10 and is the successor to Windows Server
2012 R2. The first early preview version (Technical Preview) became available on October
1, 2014 together with the first technical preview of System Center.[6] Windows Server 2016
was released on September 26, 2016 at Microsoft's Ignite conference [1] and broadly released
for retail sale on October 12, 2016.

Windows Server 2019 is the latest version of the Windows Server operating
system by Microsoft, as part of the Windows NT family of operating systems, developed
concurrently with Windows 10. It succeeded Windows Server 2016, announced on March
20, 2018 and being officially released to the public on October 2, 2018.

Unix is a family of multitasking, multiuser computer operating systems that derive from the
original AT&T Unix, development starting in the 1970s at the Bell Labs research center by
Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie, and others.

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an
operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991, by Linus Torvalds. Linux is

typically packaged in a Linux distribution.

macOS is a series of proprietary graphical operating systems developed and marketed by


Apple Inc. since 2001. It is the primary operating system for Apple's Mac computers.
Within the market of desktop, laptop and home computers, and by web usage, it is the
second most widely used desktop OS, after Microsoft Windows.

NetWare is a discontinued computer network operating system developed by Novell, Inc.


It initially used cooperative multitasking to run various services on a personal computer,
using the IPX network protocol.

The Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) was an operating system based on Research
Unix, developed and distributed by the Computer Systems Research Group at the
University of California, Berkeley.
