Anybody/Anyone, Nobody/No
one, Everybody/Everyone
Level B
Займенники somebody/someone (хтось) вживаються у стверджуваль-
них реченнях.
There is somebody/someone in the room.
У питальних реченнях замість somebody/someone вживаються слова
anybody/anyone.
Did you meet anybody/anyone at the café?
У заперечних реченнях можливе вживання двох варіантів: not any-
body/anyone або nobody/no one.
She didn’t ask anybody/anyone for help.
She asked nobody/no one for help.
Займенники somebody/someone вживаються в питальних реченнях,
що висловлюють пропозицію чи прохання.
Would you like somebody to help you? (пропозиція)
Will somebody open the door? (прохання)
Займенники anybody/anyone вживаються у стверджувальних речен-
нях у значенні «будь-хто», «хто завгодно».
It is an easy task. Anybody/Аnyone can do it.
Займенники everybody/everyone мають значення «всі, кожен» і вжи-
ваються у стверджувальних, заперечних та питальних реченнях. З цими
займенниками дієслова завжди вживаються в однині.
Everybody/Еveryone knows about it.

Займенник something (щось) уживається у стверджувальних реченнях.
I can see something in the distance.
У питальних реченнях замість something уживається anything.
Did you buy anything tasty for dinner?
У заперечних реченнях можливе вживання двох варіантів: not any-
thing або nothing.
He didn’t say anything. He said nothing.
Займенник something вживається в питальних реченнях, що вислов-
люють пропозицію чи прохання.
Would you like to buy something? (пропозиція)
Can I have something to drink? (прохання)
Займенник anything уживається у стверджувальних реченнях у зна-
ченні «будь-що», «що завгодно».
You can paint anything you like.
Займенник everything має значення «все» і вживається у стверджу-
вальних, заперечних та питальних реченнях. З цим займенником діє-
слова завжди вживаються в однині.
Everything is quiet here.
Have you bought everything that I wrote in the list?

Expressing Ability
Level A
Модальні дієслова can, must, may, could, might, shall, will, should
не змінюються за особами й числами та самостійно (без допоміжних
дієслів) утворюють заперечні й питальні форми. Після цих модальних
дієслів інфінітив уживається без частки to.
Can you play the violin? — No, I can’t. But I can play the guitar.
Для вираження здатності, вміння щось робити (ability) вживаються
модальні дієслова can, could, be able to.
Can уживається для вираження здатності чи вміння щось робити
в теперішньому часі.
I can ride a bike.
Could, was (were) able to вживаються для вираження здатності чи
вміння щось робити в минулому часі. Ми вживаємо could, коли йдеться
про вміння щось робити в минулому взагалі (у значенні «міг», «умів»),
а was (were) able to — коли йдеться про здатність щось робити в
минулому як доконану дію (у значенні «зміг», «спромігся»).
Nick could play chess when he was nine.
He was able to swim in spite of the pain in the leg.
Дієслово can не має форми майбутнього часу, тому замість нього
вживається will be able to, коли йдеться про вміння чи здатність
щось робити у майбутньому.
She will be able to run the race tomorrow.
