Chapter 9 Review

Concept 1: Plan Schedule Management

Plan schedule management involves a number of techniques that are important in

planning a project. In addition, such techniques are also useful in monitoring the progress of a

project and controlling the necessary resources to achieve the intended objectives. By definition,

project scheduling refers to setting the dates for the execution of various activities of the project.

The activities are important since they serve to build a project plan to ensure that the project runs

smoothly. Besides, the activities must be defined carefully and this serves as the first step in

project scheduling.

Concept 2: Key Scheduling Terminology

Project scheduling has a number of terminologies used to define specific concepts in

project management. Some of these terminologies include scope, work breakdown structure,

work package, path, etc. The term scope refers to the various components of a project. These

components may include the project’s products and the content of work associated with the

project. Other terms that are used in project scheduling include burst activity, merge activity and

forward/backward pass.

Concept 3: Developing a Network

Developing a network is a sequential process that requires logic. This process requires the

use of Activity-on-Node technique to develop an effective network diagram. It is also important

to consider the sequence in which the project’s activities occur for efficient scheduling. Network

diagramming can be done using one of the two primary: PERT (Program Evaluation and Review

Technique) and CPM (Critical Path Method).

Concept 4: Duration Estimation

Estimating the duration of a project is an important aspect of project scheduling where

project managers use probabilistic techniques during the estimation process. In addition, duration

estimation is also an important step involved during network building. Various factors affect the

accuracy of duration estimation. Some of these factors include experience, expert opinion, and

mathematical derivation.
