Nitrofurantoin

aka Macrobid
Spectrum : Broad spectrum

Mechanism of Action:
Reduced by baterial flavoproteins to reactive intermediates.
These intermediates inactive or alter batcterial ribosomal proteins and other macromolecules
cause the inhibition of vital biochemical processes and the synthesis of bacterial DNA, RNA,
Cell wall and proteins

Indication
Urinary tract infectious disease
Prophylaxis of urinary tract infectious disease

Contraindication
Hypersensitivity to Nitrofurantoin
Anuria
Significant renal impairment
Pregnant patients during labour and delivery
infants under the one month of age

Dosing

in UTI
50-100mg orally 4 times daily for 1 week
Prophylaxis of a UTI
50-100mg orally nightly

side effect
common: Nausea , Vomiting , Flatulence , change in colour of urine
Serious: Lung Disease , Liver problems , Numbness or tingling
