Regional faultlines may

widen due to pandemic
BY PRAMIT BHATTACHARYA

W
hen covid-19 first struck India last year, the richer parts of the country bore the brunt of the viral attack. Unlike
in the ongoing wave, the rural areas of the country were spared the worst of the pandemic. Hence, mobility levels
and economic activity did not take as big a hit in overwhelmingly rural states such as Bihar and Odisha as they did
in urbanized Gujarat and Maharashtra. This is also reflected in the performance of key indicators across states over the past
year. Economic activity weakened in all states, but relatively poorer states took a less severe hit.
This year could be very different. The pandemic has spread far and wide, with ‘excess death’ numbers from poorer parts
of the country suggesting a much harder hit than what official covid tolls suggest. The only potent antidote to the disease,
vaccines have reached fewer people in the less prosperous parts of the country because of both supply inequities and vaccine
hesitancy.
Richer state economies were closing the gap with other states in terms of mobility and levels of economic activity before
the second wave struck. With a larger share of the population vaccinated, they would likely see faster recovery in the coming
months as mobility levels rise.
This would mean the gap between richer states, largely in the west and the south, and the poorer ones, largely in the east
and the north, is set to widen. The regional gap has been growing over the past two decades, and will likely widen in this fiscal.

Almost all large states saw a sharp decline in economic activity over the past fiscal

S
outh Africa’s antioxidant-rich
rooibos or bush tea has been
assigned the status of pro-
tected designation of origin. Like
champagne, roquefort and Kalam-
ata olives, rooibos tea has been
added to a European Union list of
protected agricultural products and
foodstuffs. The protected designa-
tion of origin (PDO) status, assigned
to the tea or “red bush” late last
month, means only leaves culti-
vated in South Africa’s southeast
Cederberg region can be sold as
“rooibos” in EU countries and sev-
eral others outside the bloc.The
PDO status—meant to protect the
name and authenticity of unique
geographically-linked products—
will allow producers to limit com-
petition from a growing range of
non-genuine rooibos teas that have
appeared amid rising demand for
the caffeine free, antioxidant-rich
brew. “It gives us the ability to mar-
ket rooibos much more aggres-
sively,” South African Rooibos
Council director Nicie Vorster said.
South Africa produces an average
of 15,000 tonnes of Rooibos per
year, according to the council,
mainly in the Cederberg’s rocky
mountain range.
The reddish, needle-shaped
leaves are brewed into a sweet
earthy drink widely popular among
locals. Rooibos leaves are also
mixed with other teas for aromatic
infusions, fitted into coffee capsules
to make “red cappuccinos” and
used as a base for beauty products.
Touted for its health benefits, rooi-
bos has gained international popu-
larity over the past two decades.
