Objectives of the Lesson

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:


1. know the definition of community dynamics and community action; 2. explain the importance of
studying community dynamics and community action; and3. create a social map and identify
where they belong on their community.

Values Integration

This session will help the students identify their current place in their community andtheywill also be
able to see that there are changes that are happening in their society.

Vocabulary

Community – it is a group of people living in the same place or having a particular


characteristicincommon.
Community action – it refers to forms of collective mobilisation where individuals or groupscometogether
to identify their own needs and determine their own forms of action to meet thoseneedsCommunity
dynamics – are the changes in community structure and composition over time.

COMMUNITY

∙ Community is the combination of two Latin words i.e. ‘com’ means together and‘munis’means
serve i.e. serve together is called community.
∙ A community is commonly considered as a social unit (a group of people) whohavesomething in
common, such as norms, values, or identity. Often-but not always- communitiesshare a sense of
place that is situated in a given geographical area(e.g. acountry, village,town or neighbourhood).

∙ Although communities are usually small relative to personal social ties(micro-level),‘community’ may
also refer to large group affiliations(or macro-level), suchas nationalcommunities, international
communities and virtual communities.
∙ In simple terms a community is a population rotted in one place where the daily lives of eachmember
involves contact with and dependent on other members.

COMMUNITY DYNAMICS

∙ Community Dynamics is the process of change and development in communities of all

livingorganisms-including plants, microorganisms, and small and large creatures of everysort. ∙


Community-Dynamics is the process of change and development within communities.

COMMUNITY ACTION
∙ Community action is any activity that increases the understanding, engagement andempowerment of

communities in the design and delivery of local services. ∙ Community action includes a broad range of
activities and is sometimes describedas ‘social action' or ‘community engagement'. These activities can
vary in their objective, therolethecommunity plays, the types of activities involved, their scale and their
integrationwithinthecouncil. What they have in common is that they all involve greater engagement of
local citizens in the planning, design and delivery of local services.

Significance of Community Action


Community action is about putting communities at the heart of their own local services.Involving
communities in the design and delivery of services can help to achieveanumberofobjectives,
including:
∙ Building community and social capacity – helping the community to share knowledge, skillsand ideas.

∙ Community resilience – helping the community to support itself.

∙ Prevention – a focus on early access to services or support, engagement indesign, cross-sector


collaboration and partnerships.
∙ Maintaining and creating wealth – for example helping people into employmentordeveloping
community enterprises.

Activity

“Social Mapping”
Social mapping is a visual method of showing the relative location of households andthedistribution of
different people (such as male, female, adult, child, landed, landless, literate, andilliterate) together with
the social structure, groups and organizations of an area.

This is an example of social mapping.


Directions: On a short bond paper, prepare a social map featuring the different networksofpeople
and resources that exist in your community. And answer the questions that follow.
