Lab # 11

Title: Circulation

Aim:

Apparatus & Materials: Individual, skipping rope, stopwatch

Method:

1. Obtain an individual and let her locate her cardiac pulse.

2. Allow her to keep count of her pulse for one minute, with the assistance of a stopwatch.
3. Record the number of pulses.
4. Repeat four more times and record all results.
5. Individual then walks on the spot for 30 seconds.
6. After 30 seconds, allow individual to keep count of the number of pulses for one minute.
7. Record the number of pulses.
8. Repeat four more times and record all results.
9. Individual then skips on the spot using a skipping rope for 30 seconds.
10. After 30 seconds, allow individual to keep count of the number of pulses for one minute.
11. Record the number of pulses.
12. Repeat four more times and record all results.
13. Individual is then asked to count the number of pulses for one minute while she is at rest.
14. Record the number of pulses.
15. Repeat four more times and record all results.
16. Create a Table to show all results and the plot a graph showing the number of pulses per
minute during the series of physical activities.
Results:

Discussion:

 What is a Pulse?
 Why did the pulse rate increase or decrease with different activities? Explain fully for
each activity
 Using the graph compare the number of pulses per minute for the different activities by
identifying the highest and lowest.
 How can the experiment be improved for more accurate results?

Precautions: State any precautions taken for this lab

Sources of Error / Limitations: Explain any mistakes made during the experiment or
uncontrollable factors that could have affected the results (e.g. student could not skip for 30
seconds) or any variables that were not controlled that could have affected results (e.g. B.M.I,
genetic factors, predisposition to cardiovascular disease could affect pulse rate).

Reflection:

Conclusion: State what effect exercise had on the pulse rate of the student. Identify the category
of exercise which had more of an effect.
