Duration: Two sessions, 25 minutes each
Standards:
CC.1.2.3.F Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in grade-level text,
distinguishing literal from non-literal meaning as well as shades of meaning among related
words.
Materials:
● “Quick as a Cricket”
● Anchor chart paper
● Similes Game
Procedures:
12:20 - 12:25
Read “Quick as a Cricket”
12:25 - 12:30
Discussion: Is the boy actually a cricket? Is he actually a lion? Why would the book compare
him to a cricket or a lion?
12:30 - 12:35
Make an anchor chart:
Simile - When you compare two things using the words “like” or “as”
Examples - create examples together as a class
12:35 - 12:45
Tell students that the left side of the room is for similes and that the right side is for sentences
that are not similes. Project this powerpoint. Some sentences contain similes, while others do not.
Pause after every sentence and have students choose the left or right side of the room. For the
last few, have students put a checkmark or x on their whiteboards.
Day 2:
Objectives: Students will be able to create similes.
Standards:

Materials:
● 24 pieces of blank paper
● Example book
Procedures:
12:20 - 25
Ask students what they learned about similes yesterday. Have them dump their thoughts on their
whiteboards. Star the board of 2 students who had good information. Those students will share.
Refer to the anchor chart if necessary.
12:25 - 12:30
Share example simile book. Show students how to fold their paper. Tell students the expectations
of this project; they will have 3 similes about themselves and 3 pictures.
12:30 - 12:45
Have students work on their books. Go around the room and scaffold as needed.
