CLO3: Analyze continuous-time and discrete-time signals and systems in the transform domains
including Laplace, Fourier, and Z transforms

Problem 1 [1 pt]
The impulse response of a DT-LTI system is given as

Find its transfer function H (z ) using the bilateral Z-Transform and analyze its convergence (i.e.,
determine the region of convergence).

Solution:

Using definition of the bilateral Z-Tx and noting that H (z ) is the Z-Tx of h [n ], we get

H ( z )= ∑ h [ n ] z−n=z 3 +2 z 2+ 3 z + 4+3 z−1 +2 z −2+ z −3
n=−∞

Which converges for all complex z except z=0 and z=∞.

Problem 2 [2 pts]
A discrete-time LTI system has transfer function
z
H [ z ]= 2
z + 7 z+10
Determine the impulse response of the system and also analyze its stability.

Solution:
H [ z]
We apply PFE to leading to
z
H [ z] 1 1 1 1 1 1
= 2 = = −
z z +7 z+ 10 ( z +2 ) ( z+ 5 ) 3 z +2 3 z+5
Multiplying out by z gives
1 z 1 z
H [ z ]= −
3 z +2 3 z +5
Using Z-Transform pairs
1 1
h [ n ] = (−2 ) u [n]− (−5 ) u[n]
n n

Stability test in frequency domain:
System Transfer Function H (z ) has two poles, both of which are outside the unit circle,
making it unstable.
Stability test in time domain:
The impulse response is not absolutely integrable. Therefore, the system is unstable.
