SOLUTION

CLO2: Calculate parameters related to continuous-time and discrete-time signals and systems in
the time domain.

Problem 1 [0.5+1 Points]

Consider the two discrete-time (DT) functions shown below

(a) Write 𝑥[𝑛] as a sum of scaled and shifted impulses.

(b) Find the plot the convolution 𝑥[𝑛] * 𝑔[𝑛]

Solution:

(a)
𝑥[𝑛] = 3δ[𝑛 − 3] + 2(δ[𝑛 − 2] + δ[𝑛 − 4]) + δ[𝑛 − 1] + δ[𝑛 − 5]

(b)

Problem 2 [0.5+0.5+0.5 Points]
Consider the DT LTI system with input 𝑥[𝑛] and output 𝑦[𝑛]
1
𝑦[𝑛] = 𝑥[𝑛] + 2
𝑦[𝑛 − 1]

Assume that the impulse response of the system satisfies ℎ[𝑘] = 0, 𝑘 < 0.

(a) Find the Impulse Response values ℎ[0], ℎ[1], and ℎ[2]

(b) Find a general simplified formulation of ℎ[𝑛]

(c) Use ℎ[𝑛] to check whether the system is causal and/or BIBO stable.

Provide proper justifications.

Solution:

Let the input be an impulse 𝑥[𝑛] = δ[𝑛], then the output is impulse response 𝑦[𝑛] = ℎ[𝑛], leading
to
1
ℎ[𝑛] = δ[𝑛] + 2
ℎ[𝑛 − 1]

(a) From the above, we get

1
ℎ[0] = δ[0] + 2
ℎ[− 1] = δ[0] = 1

1 1 1
ℎ[1] = δ[1] + 2
ℎ[0] = 0 + 2
= 2

1 1 1 1
ℎ[2] = δ[2] + 2
ℎ[1] = 0 + 2
× 2
= 2
2

(b) Extending the solution of (a) and using the unit step function, we may write ℎ[𝑛] as
1
ℎ[𝑛] = 𝑛 𝑢[𝑛]
2

(c)

A DT LTI system is causal if ℎ[𝑛] = 0, 𝑛 < 0, which is the case here. The system is therefore causal.

A DT LTI system is BIBO stable if ∑ |ℎ[𝑛]| < ∞. For the current system, this leads to a truncated
𝑛
1
geometric series with ratio 𝑟 = 2
, which is a convergent series. The system is therefore stable.
