SOLUTION

CLO1: Apply basic knowledge of signals and systems to categorize, and perform basic operations
on, signals and systems.

Problem 1 [0.5+0.5+0.5 Points]

Evaluate the following integrals (justify all steps)

(a) ∫−∞(𝛿 (𝑡 − 2) + 𝛿(𝑡 + 2) + 𝛿(𝑡 − 4)) 𝑑𝑡

(b) 𝑒 2 ∫−∞ 𝑒 −𝑡 𝑢(𝑡)𝛿(𝑡 − 2)𝑑𝑡

(c) ∫−∞ 𝑢(−𝑡)𝛿(𝑡 + 𝛼)𝑑𝑡 (where 𝛼 is a real positive constant)

Solution:
(a) 3 (integral of each term is 1)

(b) 1, since

Leading to 𝑒 2 𝑒 −2 = 1
(c) One, since the impulse is at 𝑡 = −𝛼 , leading to the whole integral being equal to 𝑢(𝛼)
which equals one as 𝛼 is a positive number.

Problem 2 [0.5+0.5+0.5 Points]

Determine whether the following signals are periodic (provide proper justification). In case
of periodic signals, find the fundamental period.

(a) 𝑥(𝑡) = cos(2𝜋𝑡) + 5𝑢(𝑡) , −∞ < 𝑡 < ∞

FES ES332 – Signals and Systems - Dr. Naveed R. Butt GIKI

(b) 𝑥(𝑡) = cos(2𝜋𝑡) + 5 , −∞ < 𝑡 < ∞
(c) 𝑥(𝑡) = cos(2𝜋𝑡) + 5cos(6𝜋𝑡) , −∞ < 𝑡 < ∞

Solution:
(a) The signal is not periodic since it is zero for 𝑡 < 0
2𝜋 2𝜋
(b) The signal is periodic with period 𝑇 = = 2𝜋 = 1
𝜔

(c)
