This booklet covers both the single axle gear

RP832 and the bogie axle gear RBP832. Unless
otherwise instructed, the procedures apply to
both types of central gear. Numbers in the
directions refer to associated illustrations or
exploded view drawings at the front of the
booklet.

Setting press force

• The press force attained depends directly on
the hydraulic pressure from the air driven B Connection for compressed air
pump. The hydraulic pressure delivered by C Manometer
the pump depends on the input air pressure,
which is governed by a pressure regulator. D Adjuster knob
E Diagram on pump housing
• The air pressure can be changed with knob
D. Pull the red locking ring towards the
knob and set the desired pressure which can
be read on the manometer C.

• Set the press force to 120 kN (12 tonnes) as

follows:

• Follow the press force axis (the bottom axis)

to the right until you reach 120 kN.
• Then follow the line straight up until it
meets the bold diagonal line.
• Draw a horizontal line to the left from this
intersection. This will end up on 5.2 bar,
which is the pressure required for a press
force of 120 kN.

Differential housing and crownwheel

Setting tooth clearance and differential

housing bearing preload
1 Set up dial gauge 98 075 perpendicular to
one of the teeth on the crownwheel. Zero the
dial.

2 Adjust the tooth clearance by moving the

whole differential housing sideways using
the adjusting rings. Turn both the rings
equal amounts and make sure the ring
notches correspond with the holes for the
split pins.

3 The tooth clearance must be 0.30-0.41 mm

on all gear ratios except 5.88, where the
clearance must be 0.25-0.36 mm. It is better
to be closer to the minimum limit as the
clearance can increase slightly when the
bearing caps are tightened. Take
measurements at 4 points and calculate the
average.
4 Tighten the bearing cap bolts to 330 Nm.
Rotate the crownwheel ten or so times and
check the tooth clearance.

Note: Make sure all the bearing rollers are

rotating and not sliding. Alternatively, use a
screwdriver to feel whether any of them are
loose. When the central gear is positioned with
the crownwheel upwards, check the bearing
preload at the top bearing.

5 Fit the split pins.

Checking mesh image

1 Apply a thin layer of colour marker on two
adjacent teeth. Turn the crownwheel one
half turn and repeat the procedure.
2 Make sure the colour marker makes contact
with the pinion. Rotate the end yoke a few
turns in either direction. Meanwhile, brake
the crownwheel with your hand.
3 Make sure the mesh image corresponds with
figure 1 on both the leading and trailing
flanks of the teeth.
4 If the image is similar to figure 2 then the
pinion is too far from the centre of the
crownwheel.
If the image is similar to figure 3 then the
pinion is too close to the centre of the
crownwheel.
Adjust the pinion and crownwheel in the
direction of the arrows and maintain the
prescribed tooth clearance.

Assembly
1 Place the crownwheel 48 onto the
differential housing half 52 and screw in
two bolts 49 opposite each other.
2 Tighten the bolts alternately until the
crownwheel abuts the differential housing
half.
3 Fit the remaining bolts.

4 Mount the differential housing half in a

press to prevent it from twisting when the
crownwheel bolts are tightened. Use support
ring 99 139 and drift 87 579. Press with
100-150 kN.

5 Tighten the crownwheel bolts. Tightening

torque 1000 Nm.

Alternative tightening method:

• Tighten the crownwheel bolts with a torque
wrench to 300 Nm first. Mark the
crownwheel at the socket and then tighten a
further 40°. This will provide a clamping
force corresponding to 1000 Nm.

• 40° can be marked out on a socket in the

following way.
Example:
• Measure the diameter of the socket with a
sliding caliper, e.g. 46 mm. Multiply with
3.14 to obtain the circumference of the
socket: 46 x 3.14 = 144 mm.

• 40° is the same as one ninth of a revolution.

Divide the circumference 144 mm by 9 to
give 16 mm. Mark two lines on the
circumference of the socket 16 mm apart.

Assembly
1 Press the rear pinion bearing 10 onto the
pinion using drift 87 550 and 99 092.

2 Fit the oil collector into the gear housing.

Apply locking compound to the bolts and
tighten them.

3 Press the front pinion bearing outer ring 7

into the gear housing using assembly sleeve
98 524, drift 87 247 and shank 98 450.

4 Turn over the housing and fit the shims 11

that were used earlier under the rear pinion
bearing outer ring.
5 Fit the setting ring 98 779 instead of the rear
pinion bearing outer ring. This has a slightly
smaller outer diameter, which makes it
easier to change the number of washers.

6 There is a two-digit number painted on the

pinion. This is the deviation measurement A
given in hundredths of a mm. The pinion
setting dimension is 0.50 + A +/- 0.05 mm.

7 Lubricate the running surface of the ring

with oil. Fit the pinion and rotate it a few
turns so the rollers take their correct
positions.
8 Place the pinion position template 99 072 in
the bottom of the differential bearing seat.
Make sure the template is vertical and
parallel to the centre line of the differential.
Hold down the template lightly so it does
not wobble when measuring.

9 Measure the setting dimension of the pinion

with a feeler gauge between the end plane of
the pinion and the template.
Example: The number 58 is on the pinion.
This gives a setting dimension of
0.50 + 0.50=1.08. The setting dimension
must be 1.03 - 1.13 mm.
10 Adjust if necessary by changing shims
between the pinion bearing housing and the
gear housing.
Shims are available in thickness 0.25, 0.30
and 0.40 mm.

11 Remove the pinion and the setting ring.

Instead of them, press in the outer bearing 98 450
ring belonging to the bearing using support
ring 98 613, drift 98 566 and shank 98 450. 98 566

on support drift 98 332, drift 99 253 and
assembly drift 98 364.

18 Press in place the transfer gear using drift

87 932.

19 Fit the spacing ring 6 and the front pinion

bearing 7. Use drift 87 932 to press together
the bearings with max. 70-80 kN. Rotate the
gear housing at the same time. Stop pressing
if the gear housing becomes difficult to
rotate and change to a thicker shim or longer
spacing ring.

Note: The larger diameter of the spacing ring

must be placed against the transfer gear.

20 Attach a dynamometer to the gear housing

in the hole closest to the differential lock
operation. Measure the force required to
rotate the gear housing.
The bearing preload is correct when the
rolling resistance measured with the
dynamometer is 8-14 N with worn bearings
and 25-45 N with new bearings at a press
force of 70-80 kN.
Shims are available in thickness 0.30, 0.40
and 0.50 mm.
Spacing rings are available in lengths 22.48,
