1 Fit the dust cover. Renew the dust cover if it 99 377
is damaged.

drift 99 377. Make sure the seal is turned the
right way round, see illustration. The seal
must not be knocked in place.

Removal
1 If the vehicle is loaded, relieve the rear axle
housing before removing the gear. 2

2 Lift the vehicle and support the rear axle on
stands under the springs. Remove the
wheels.
3 Drain the oil from the rear axle housing.
4 Turn the hub so that plug 3 is at the bottom.

9 Remove the brake chambers.

Fitting
1 Clean inside the rear axle housing and on
the contact surface to the gear housing.
2 Position the axle gear with the pinion down.
Pour approx. 0.5 litres of oil into the gear
housing, see Workshop Manual group 0,
"Fuel, lubricants and fluids". Rotate the
pinion a few turns. This is essential to
ensure lubrication of the front pinion
bearing during the initial operating period.

4 Apply a zigzag bead of sealing agent
584 010 (silicon rubber) around the rear
axle housing contact surface. The bead must
be 2-3 mm thick.

end yoke using splined socket 98 765.

1 Press the outer bearing rings 15 into the
front cover 9 using drift 98 610 and shank
98 450.

3 Place the input shaft onto 99 147 and press
on the rear bearing inner ring using drift
87 932. Place the spacing ring 16 between
the bearing ring and the drift.

Removal
1 Remove the differential lock sleeve 43. If
the lock sleeve has to be dismantled, remove
the retaining ring 46 and bearing washers 45
and separate the lock sleeve from the thrust
ring 44.
2 Remove the bolts 36 for the support bracket 43 Differential lock sleeve
35 and take out the lever 34 with associated 44 Thrust ring

Fitting
1 Clean the threads on the adjusting rings and
the threads in the gear housing and bearing
caps.
2 Lubricate the roller bearings, adjusting rings
and bearing cap bolts with oil.

crownwheel side and pull off the
crownwheel bearing using tool 98 567 and

renewed as well.

Assembly
1 Place the crownwheel 48 onto the
differential housing half 52 and screw in
two bolts 49 opposite each other.
2 Tighten the bolts alternately until the
crownwheel abuts the differential housing
half.
3 Fit the remaining bolts.

pinion using drift 87 550 and 99 092.

2 Insert the levers together with the spring Differential lock operation
into the gear housing, lubricate and tighten
shaft 44 to 75 Nm. Make sure the levers are
opposite the holes for the switch and the
piston.

Dismantling
1 Turn over the gear housing. Remove the
lifting eyes 87 564. Strike the staking to
