In this module, Contemporary art differs from modern and traditional art, thus
is relevant to ask if different methods should be used for teaching. This module
shows a variety of skills, art techniques, and art production, such as installation of
birds and animals made from leaves and twigs, ropes and strings meshed in a form;
body art performance; digital presentation; music performance amidst paintings, and
many others.

This lesson describes the art skills, techniques, and production employed by
artists in contemporary art.

At the end of this module, you are expected to:


name and describe different types of techniques in art-making;
explain the difference between collage and decollage; and
make an illustration showing collage and decollage.

Many contemporary artists do not have formal studies in the fine arts but are
self-taught. Concerned with the development of their talents and skills in art-making,
they study on their own, interact with artists, and read a lot about the lives of artists
and their artworks. Thy also explore the materials in hardware stores or experiment
which chemical reactions on their base material. There are those who learn welding
simple engineering skills. Some hire resin makers, house painters, and materials
fabricators to help them in constructing their artworks.
There are different types of techniques that artists can choose from:
Collage is made by adhering flat elements such as newspaper or different
materials. Decollage is the contrary of collage, instead of an image is being build up
all or parts of existing images.
Decoupage is done by gluing decorative paper cutouts onto an object and
then coating these with one or more coats of transparent coating.
Frottage is the technique of rubbing crayon on a piece of paper which has
been placed over an object or an image. Montage is used for photography or film
where a pictorial image is juxtaposed or placed overlapping to make another picture
or design.
Land art it is also an art form that is generated in nature, using normal
materials such as soil, rock and organic media.
Graffiti are writings or drawings that have been correspondent, scratched or
painted illicitly on a wall or other aspect.
Digital arts is an artistic work or practice that uses digital technology as a
crucial part of the creative or demonstration process.
Mixed media it refers to the artwork in the building of which more than one
means has been employed.
Print making is the process of making artworks by painting, ordinarily in the
paper.

Discussion of Activity 1

Mixing different materials is popular among contemporary arts. Texture is a


fascinating thing and can go beautifully with painting. Visual and performance artists
combine their talents and skills for public performances, such as the visual art, music
and performances by Midanao artist at the Project Bakawan Arts Festival held at the
University of the Philippines, Diliman.

In art production, an art can work alone interact with fellow artist. Interactive
and collaborative works are gaining popularity among Filipino artists. Visual and
performance artists combine their talents and skills for public performances, such as
the visual art, music and performances.
Search the Internet for interactive or collaborative art done by contemporary
artists. You may browse at the website of the National Commission for Culture and
the Arts (NCCA) or webpages of art associations of the different regions. Choose
one interactive or collaborative artwork and then answer the following questions:

Collage may sometimes include magazines and newspaper clippings,


ribbons, a pint, bits of colored or handmade papers, portions of other artworks or
texts, photographs, and other found objects, glued to a manila paper.
Create a collage presenting the cause and effects of climate change.
Materials:
 Pages of colored magazine
 Paste  Manila Paper
 Scissors  Pentel Pen
Procedure:
 Gather pages of used colored magazines, cut into pieces.
 Assemble the cut pieces of colored magazines.
 Create figures that would represent the causes and effect of climate change.
 Paste them to the manila paper.
 Label the cause and the effects using the black pen.
 Put a title to your collage.

Direction:
Given the Venn diagram below try to compare and contrast collage and
decollage. Do it in your answer sheet.

Collage Decollage
The French word “Decollage” in English means” Take-Off” or “To become
Unglued” or “To become unstuck”. Example of decollage include cut-up technique.
Similar technique is the lacerated poster, a poster in which one has been placed over
another or others and the top posters have been ripped, revealing to a greater or
lesser degree the poster or posters underneath.
Now, create a decollage using newspaper.

Materials:
 Pages of colored newspaper  Manila Paper
 Paste  Pentel Pen
 Scissors

Procedure:
 Gather pages of used colored newspaper, cut into pieces.
 Assemble the cut pieces of colored newspaper.
 Paste them to the manila paper.
 Label the cause and the effects using the black pen.
 Put a title to your decollage.
