they would want to create. They even conduct
experiments on materials especially recyclable
ones, to find out which materials would work in
the production of their artwork. In the previous
lesson, local materials-(resources that can be
found readily in large quantity at a particular
location or area at a certain time, locally
available materials like timber
and stone) were used by contemporary artists
in creating their artwork.
What is meant by the word “Local”?
This can refer to material that is easily available
to the immediate environment
Ex: Bamboo (for places with lots of bamboos)
Can also refer to wherever the artist finds
himself Sometimes contemporary artist salvage
materials that can be recycled and made into
creative forms

HYBRIDITY

TIME
History paintings documenting important
events were among the most significant
subjects for artists.
A specific moment in time can be the subject of
an artwork, but artists today can also
manipulate how that moment is experienced.
Others employ media such as film and video,
which require us to invest time in order to fully
experience it. These media also allow artists to
manipulate time—slow motion, fast forward,
rewind, and repeat— as an expressive element.
SPACE
Many contemporary artists work with space by
focusing on real space—the dimensions of a
room, the spaces we move through in the city or
in the natural world, and even the limitless
spaces of the sky or the virtual space of the
Internet. They work with fine-art or industrial
materials—from wood and stone to
steel and plastics—to frame space or install a
work to fill a space. Materials such as electric
light, film, video, or digital media can also
transform, document, or create spaces. When
an artist creates a work for a room or specific
space, it is called installation art
PERFORMANCE
Performative art describes artists’ explorations
of the processes, motions, and actions they use
to create art. Some artists transform their
bodies into paintbrushes or musical
instruments or raw materials for a finished
product. Others create public or private
performances, rituals, or multimedia
events in which an artwork is a documentation
or by-product.

How to Critique Artworks
Art Criticism may be considered to be art within
the art, and each art critique may approach an
artwork uniquely differently. There is a defined
procedure for the discipline of critiquing an
artwork. Just follow these steps.
1. Describe what you see – it involves a
technical description-Artist’s name, title of
work, Type of artwork, colors used, shapes,
lines, and texture.
2. Analyze the artwork – an in-depth
examination of how the technical elements
such as color, shapes, forms, lines, texture,
light, and shadow were utilized by the artist to
create the overall impression conveyed by the
artwork or how these elements contribute to the
mood, meaning, and aesthetic
the sensation of the artwork.
3. Interpret the artwork – This is the subjective
part of an artwork criticism and will try to
accomplish the following things when
formulating the interpretation
a. Describe what you think the artist is trying
to say through the work of art
b. Describe what the artwork means to you,
and why.

You can make the sun shine

Open up your eyes and your imagination

Come on let's write a song

A little poetry, Take a photograph
Let's make some memories
You can make it anything That you want it to be
If you follow your heart, Life is a work of art

Oh, every night is like looking at a dark screen

You're never too young or too old to dream
You can make a fantasy into a reality
'Cause you're creating your own masterpiece
Close your eyes and dream it
Seeing is believing
