 This module is about the different elements used in descriptions of a specific
contemporary arts and different ways of applying the methods, techniques and
process in making these. It is also shows the skills on how to categorize the
appropriate used of the materials and techniques by means of the elements through
this lesson so learners will realize the importance of learning the skills, techniques
and production of contemporary arts.

Following the techniques in application of the process in making

contemporary arts helps the learners to appreciate learning these skills for their
future references for them in pursuing this area of their career. They will allow them
acquiring skills that can help them in developing their work in production of their
outputs. The learners will able to understand this and will give importance to their
works and assessing the outputs of being a professional practitioner in doing their
own specific contemporary arts.

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

1. define the three elements that explain the description of contemporary art;
2. apply the skills in understanding the elements in describing contemporary art;
and
3. enhance the learned skills in understanding the elements in describing
contemporary art.

Recall what you have learned in your previous lessons on local materials used
in creating arts critiques available materials and appropriate techniques.

2. The type of contemporary art

 It requires knowledge regarding arts in order to describe an artwork especially
when it is contemporary style. These consider the following in describing
contemporary arts; the scope, principles, and production and understanding of the
artist and the factors that affect art-making. In order to explain contemporary arts you
must know about the community and environment in which the artist makes arts
because many contemporary artist responses to some issues of the society wherein
they can use their perspective in doing their own artwork.

In this lesson, you will have an idea or learn how to categorize contemporary
arts by discussing these; subject matter, material, art elements and principles. This
concepts or idea can help or design for the need of describing a contemporary arts.
There are a lot of materials and mediums you will come-up in making contemporary
arts and make variations of contemporary arts.

The contemporary arts consider these three elements as the constitute

description. The subject matter defines as what you see that is described in the
artwork. You may think of a form of human wherein by means of subject matter they
will now connect in into an activity, using the texture and different colours. The
second element which is the materials defines where the specific contemporary arts
are made of. They are using objects to combine into an artwork. While the last is the
art element and principle explained as it denotes physical descriptions of an image
or picture. Colour, lines, space and other elements are being using in making visual
images. These making visual elements are arranged in well manner formations
which observe unity, harmony, rhythm, or other principles considering design that
should be using in a creative way.

These elements or descriptions of contemporary arts are being used as to

explicate them. In considering their own subject matter you can able to understand
what is the purpose of doing them maybe the artist includes his own experience in
making a contemporary art. While the materials itself will be the means how to
categorized a contemporary art whatever be the materials there will be a aligned
category by each. Lastly, the art element and principles gives importance in using
different elements in making visual images and considering this element will motivate
more in making an art into the interest and creativity of an artist.
Discussion of Activity 1
These different elements of contemporary arts such as subject matter,
materials, art element and principle are joining together to assess and evaluate the
descriptions of a contemporary art. The three elements enhance the value and
characteristics of the contemporary arts to give a clearer explanation for the
audience of the artist.

Using the questions aligned to the elements of describing or categorizing

contemporary arts, evaluate the art work by Michael Cacnio’s Sculpture Balloons. Do
this in your answer sheet.

There are different contemporary arts that can be furthermore explained by

means of these elements.

 How is the main figure put within the artistic
setting?

How do other figures in the artwork relate to the

Do these tools or objects bring out the projected

effect of the artist?

What are the combining structures in the artistic

arrangement?

The use of these elements in contemporary arts helps to acknowledge more

the importance of its meaning that can help to categorize and have clearer
information for the audience of the artist.

The contemporary arts adapt more new ways and category nowadays. So that
people or artists can cope-up to the new interest and availability of the materials that
can be used. As learners of this time, you can answer the following questions with
the use of the different elements of contemporary arts.

1. Explain every element by means of their aligned sample questions.

2. What are the benefits of knowing these elements?
3. Do you think these different questions can help in explaining well a particular
contemporary art?
The subject matter is one of the elements which allows more to give information with
regard to contemporary arts. Let’s use this question: “What is the main figure in the
artwork of Elito Circa?” Write your answer in your abswer sheet.

From the Independent Activity 2, write an essay about the painting using your
own idea or observation oh how it was being made and how its meaning was
conveyed. Write your answer in your answer sheet.

The contemporary arts also change along the way on its journey. In order to
cope-up with the changes of the modern ways maybe in culture or trends. Some
artists parallel their work to the interests of the society during these days.

The materials, being one of the elements, allows categorizing its output according to
the use of materials in contemporary arts. What do you think are the materials used

1. If you will be asked to make your own artwork aside from the materials
used in the artwork above, What would be the materials you will be using to
make the same artwork but different in materials?

2. Give at least 3 contemporary arts and write all the possible materials used
in that particular artwork.

3. Draw (5) materials used in making contemporary arts

 4. Write down their use in contemporary arts.

5. Why do you think we need to identify the materials used in making

contemporary arts?

It is important to enhance our knowledge in categorizing different

contemporary arts to have a depth idea and concepts because it is for the aspiring
artist to have a deeper perspective with regards to what are issues and concerns of
their environment.

lesson, make any type of contemporary art depicting the new normal in the
educational setting. The materials to be used should be those which are available in
your surroundings. Explain your artwork using the 3 elements which were discussed.
