CIVE 4302 – Reinforced and Pre-stressed Concrete Design (Fall 2013)

ASSIGNMENT #3
(Due Date: November 04, 2013)
Question:
The slab shown below supports a superimposed dead load of 1.20 kPa and a live load of 2.20
kPa. The slab extends 150 mm past the exterior face of the column to support a cladding wall
which weighs 5.8 kN/m of length of wall. The storey-to-storey height is 3.30 m. Use 30 MPa
concrete and Grade 400 reinforcement.

(a) Select the thickness of the slab

(Hint: check the minimum thickness required by CSA A23.3-04. Then check the
punching shear resistance of the slab to be exceeding the punching shear force for all

columns (interior, edge, and corner) to ensure the sufficiency of the selected slab
thickness);

(b) Check the CSA A23.3-04 requirements for using Direct Design Method (DDM).
Then, if applicable, use DDM to compute the moments for the slab strips (including
middle and column strip moments) running north-to-south along gridlines 1 and 2
(Hint: take advantage of symmetry, i.e., span A-B is identical to span C-D).

(c) Design the reinforcement for the column strip along gridline 2 (Hint: take advantage
of symmetry).

(d) Assuming that there is one storey above and one storey below the slab under study,
based on the Elastic Frame Method (EFM), calculate the analysis parameters that you
need to carry out a moment distribution analysis for the three-span panel along
gridline 1. Do not carry out the moment distribution analysis. Assume the same slab
thickness that you used in section (b).

Bonus Question (20%): Carry out the moment distribution analysis to obtain the column and the
slab strip moments along gridline 1. Compare the EFM slab strip moments with DDM slab strip
moments. Distribute the total slab beam moments to the column and middle strips.
