DESIGN & DRAWING OF STEEL STRUCTURES
(Civil Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 70
Use of IS 800, IS: 875, steel tables & railway design standards code are to be permitted.

PART – A
(Answer any one question, 01 × 28 = 28 marks)
*****
1 Design a gusset base for the column section consisting of one SC 250 with two cover plates
300 x 25 mm carrying an axial load of 2500 kN. SBC of soil is 250 kN/m2 and permissible bearing
pressure on concrete is 4000 kN/m2. Draw:
(a) Side view of gusseted base
(b) Plan view of gusseted base.

2 A welded plate girder with an effective span of 16 m supports concentrated loads of 150 kN each
at 4 m intervals. Design the plate girders section, intermediate and end bearing stiffeners. Draw the
following view to a suitable scale.
(a) Elevation of girder showing the stiffeners.
(b) Cross section of the girder at midspan.
(c) Plan of the girder.

PART – B
(Answer any three questions, 03 × 14 = 42 marks)
3 The tension members of a roof truss consist of a single angle 150 x 115 x 8. The member carries a
tension of 180 kN. Find the lengths of 6 mm fillet welds at the extremities of the longer leg for its
connection to the gusset plate. Safe shear stress in the weld is 110 N/mm2.

4 Design a beam of span 6.50 m to carry a U.D.L of 15 kN/m and two concentrate load of 75 kN each
at 2 m, from eight ends of the beam. The only rolled steel I-section available is ISMB 350 @
524 N/m. Design the beam section if the compression flange is supported laterally.

5 A tension member carrying a tension of 22.5 kN meets the principal rafter in a truss carrying a
compressive force of 83.5 kN. Design the members. The panel length of the principal rafter is 1.75 m.
Design also the welded joint if the tension member meets the principal rafter at right angles.

6 (a) A simply supported beam of span 5 m is subjected to a superimposed load of 30 kN/m over entire
span and a concentrated load of 200 kN at mid span. Design the beam and check for deflection and
shear. The beam is laterally supported throughout.
(b) Differentiate between laterally supported beam and laterally unsupported beam with neat sketches.

7 Design a hand operated travelling crane simply supported by gantry girder for the given data: Span of
gantry girder = 5 m, span of crane girder = 15 m, crane capacity = 200 kN, self-weight of crane girder
excluding trolley = 200 kN, self-weight of trolley = 30 kN, minimum hook approach = 1 m, distance
between wheels = 3.5 m c/c, self-weight of rails = 0.3 kN/m. Checks for buckling and deflections are
not required.
