The study makes an effort to understand the durability of clayey soils based on the findings of
available studies. However, I can only recommend the article for publication if the following queries/concerns are addressed.
L16-17: The sentence needs to be rephrased for a better understanding
L34: The usage of tense is not consistent and needs attention L35: Is the figure directly copied from the paper mentioned? If yes, it must be redrawn to highlight the swell/shrink behavior. L25-40: The Introduction is very poorly written. I see no references for the claims made in the first paragraph of the Introduction section. L42: What is meant by additive’s? L46: Why does “Sulphur” start with Uppercase “S” and the same is not consistent? L47-55 needs a better explanation. L70 - 71 grammar usage needs attention. Moreover, the Introduction does not somehow match the Journal’s standards and needs to be proofread by a native speaker. L90-92: The impact of adding other additives along with nanoparticles to soil is not mentioned, then what is the point of adding this line? L112-115: Why the disparity in the behavior of clayey soil post-inclusion of nano clay? L205: How enhancement of cation reactions can lead to an increased strength? It needs to be explained well. Cation complexion and increased surface area might result in lesser strength owing to the large water intrusion. L241: Is it absorption or adsorption? When you talk about diffused double layer, how absorption is important? L256: If the hydrophilic nature is enhanced owing to higher SSA, then how the pore spaces are reduced? A better mechanism is essential to explain this concept. L269: The self-healing capacity of the GCLs are mostly possible in the hydrated conditions, then how in unsaturated conditions such a sealing potential is enhanced? As surface tension is brought in, this can lead to confusion amongst the readers. L270: “Sharo and Alawneh [23] reported that Nano clay particles displayed higher affinity towards water due to higher specific surface area and increased water absorption capacity”. Then how the interaction of water is reduced as mentioned in the very next line? L274: Is it Vander wall or Van der Waals. Please confirm. L278: Fig. 8 is very poorly represented. If it’s copied directly it needs to be redrawn to highlight a similar mechanism. All the figures are somehow very inappropriately dragged making it very blurred in appearance. I urge the authors to pay thorough attention to this. L279: The title suggests it’s the stabilization of clayey soil with nano-additives, then why the liquefaction of sand is brought in suddenly? The study has given a simple summary of very limited available work. The figures presented were directly taken from a single study and made no effort to make a comparative study of various works. Analysis of available results (for a particular nano-additive) in the form of figures would have been interesting. Likewise, the review does not provide any new insights into the existing and well-established mechanisms. Kindly amend accordingly.
