Subjects: Art and craft

Children’s previous relevant experience: In the previous class, children have been
introduced to the parts of their face. Children are taught to recognize the parts on their face
which are eyes, nose, mouth and ears. Children have learn to name of the parts and can point
to the respective parts. For example, children can name “eyes”, and point to their eyes.

Learning Objective(s): To enable children to:

a) Draw their face with eyes, nose, ears and mouth.


b) Design their hair by using different types and size of leaf.

Learning Outcome(s): At the end of this lesson:

a) Children are able to draw their face with eyes, nose, ears and mouth by dipping their
fingers with water colour, then draw it on the drawing paper.
b) Children are able to design their hair with different types of leaves by sticking the
leaves on the drawing paper.

Integration(s):
a) Mathematics: Children will count their parts of face. For example, they can count one
until two and say “two eyes” and “two ears”.

b) English language: Children learned to say the words such as “leaf”, “long”, “short”,
“hair”, “eye”, “nose”, “ears” and “mouth”. Besides, children can share ideas and talk
about how they design their hair with different types of leaves by sticking the leaves on
the drawing paper.
c) Physical: Children will use finger to dip the water colour and draw their parts of face
like eyes and mouth on the drawing paper with hand.

d) Science: Children will have sensory learning during the art class. They will observe
different types of leaf and feel by touching it. For example, children touch and feel the
texture of leaf. Children will also learn to identify the colour of the water colour they use
to draw the face.

Materials:
a) For introduction, I will prepare 1 big round plastic container, 50 pieces different types
of leaves and 1 sample of the leaves and face art work (Image 1).

b) For steps, I will prepare 6 sheets of newspaper, 50 pieces different types of leaves, 6
water palletes filled with six water colours which are red, yellow, blue, green, orange
and black (I have put the colour on the pallete before I start the class), 1 cup of water
(to be pour on the water pallete later), 6 pieces of drawing block and 6 child size
glues.

c) For closing, there is nothing to prepare.

Procedures of activity:
(a) Introduction - 5 minutes (Involved whole group activity)

Before the class start, I will bring children to the backyard at the corner of school field. After
that, I will gather children to sit at the round table and greet them by saying “good afternoon
children”. I will let children to greet me with “good afternoon Ms Xin Wei”. I will place the
big round plastic container on the table. There are 50 pieces of different types of leaves such
as long leaf, short leaf, dead leaf, leaves with different size and different colour which are
yellow, brown and green. “Let’s have a look, can you tell me what is in the plastic
container?” I will let children to answers until I get the answer is “leaf”. Then, I will take one
piece of leaf on my hand, and ask children “have you see leaf in your daily life? Where do
you see it?” I will let children to share it one by one. After that, I will let children to observe
the leaves by exploring their senses. I will let children to touch and feel the texture of leaf,
and observe the leaf. When children are observing, I will ask questions like “what is the
colour of leaf?” “Can you tell me what the size of this leaf is, is it long?” “Alright children,
the activity today is to draw your face and decorate it with this leaves! (I point to the leaf).
Come on, let’s start our art class today!

(b) Steps – 12 minutes (Involved whole group, small group and individual activities)
 Children will sit in floor and I will sit in front of them. Before the class start, I have
place 6 sheets of newspaper, 6 pieces of drawing paper, 6 water palletes filled with six
water colours which are red, yellow, blue, green, orange. After that, I will show
children the sample of face drawing and decorated with leaves (Image 1) “Children,
can you see this is a little girl’s face drawing, and there are many leaves stick on his
hair and the parts of face is coloured using water colour! You are going to draw your
own face by using hand with watercolour and use these leaves to decorate your hair.
 Then, I tell children: “so, you are going to draw your own face at this drawing paper.
Then, I place the sample of face drawing decorated with leaves on the centre of
newspaper to let children refer when they are creating their drawing. I also take a cup
of water and pour a little on each child’s water colour palette and mix with the water
colour.” Next, I tell children: “you can now use your hand and dip into the water
colour on the palette, then draw it on your drawing paper! During the drawing
process, I will always guide children and ready to help them if they meet problems.
 After children have complete their drawing, I will say: “well done children, you have
complete your drawing! Now let’s decorate your hair by using the leaves!” (I point to
the leaves) “Now you can choose the leaves that suitable for your hair, then stick it on
the drawing paper by using glue.” I will demonstrate the correct way to use glue to
stick the leaf and paste it on the drawing paper. After that, I will give children ideas
when they are decorating their hair, for example I will say: “you have long hair, you
can stick the leaves until your shoulder!” “Children, you can choose any colour and
size of leaf to create your hair, you are the creator!”
 When it is almost time up, I will give reminder to children like: “dear children, we
have 3 minutes left to complete your artwork, keep going!” After children have
decorated their hair on the drawing, I will praised them by saying: “Well done
children, you have complete your face drawing with leaf!”
c) Closing - 4 minutes (Involved whole group activity)
I will let children to show their creation to their peer. They can share ideas and talk about
how they decorate their hair using those types of leaf. I will praise children by saying: “all of
your design is creative and nice, good job! “Alright, thank you for sharing, you can bring
your artwork home to show to your parents! I am sure that they will be very happy!” I
dismiss the class.

Children’s fine/gross motor skills development: During the art and craft lesson, children
will use finger to dip the water colour and use finger to draw the face with eyes, nose, mouth
and ears on the drawing paper. Besides, children learn to use the child-size glue, which is
they put the glue on the leaf and stick it on the drawing paper to create their own hair.

Children’s informal literacy and numeracy development : Listening to teacher instruction


and act upon them. For example, teacher will let children to observe the leaves by exploring
their senses. Children will listen to teacher’s instruction and will touch and feel the texture of
leaf, and observe the leaf. Besides, children will learn numeracy for example children can
know they have drew two eyes on the drawing paper.

Children’s play-based/experiential learning approaches: Children will have sensory


learning during the art class. They will observe different types of leaf and feel by touching it.
For example, children touch and feel the texture of leaf. Besides, children are able to applying
the creativity on leaf, which they use glue to stick different kinds of leaf and paste it on the
drawing paper to decorate as their hair.

Evaluation of Learning Outcome(s):


a) All of the children are able to draw their face with eyes, nose, ears and mouth by
dipping their fingers with water colour, then draw it on the drawing paper.
b) All of the children are able to design their hair with different types of leaves by
sticking the leaves on the drawing paper.
Reflection upon lesson implemented:
I am very happy because children are excited and engage with my activity. Besides, children
are very cooperative as they will always focus on my teaching and follow instruction given
by teacher. I am also very surprise because children give their passion throughout the activity
today. They draw their face with fun, they also excited to explore with the leaf. I appreciate
children’s cooperative and praise them for doing a great job.

Follow up activity: I will let children to do hand painting during next naturalistic learning
activity. They will use hand to touch with the paint and print their handprint onto the mah-
jong paper.
