broad range of topics, including but not limited to

• The latter of the two patents is the basis of which a successful company
was formed using the same technology.
• On completing academia spent 4 ½ years at JTI working in R&D filing over
200 patents on topics including

• Consumer authentication
• Handheld electronic devices
• Flavor-enhancing consumables

IP – Protect your idea
• Patents offer 20 years of protection for an idea

• They can be an asset to a business being sold or licensed

• They allow you to outperform rivals forced to settle for sub-optimal solutions

• The downside? They are expensive

• A filed patent in the UK costs £5-15k depending on the patent firm used
• A PCT which covers you in 142 countries for 18 months costs ~£3k
• Then a fee is required to maintain the patent in each jurisdiction after 18 months
• Then a further yearly maintenance fee in each jurisdiction

• They are an essential investment for many but also a costly mistake if not undertaken
effectively
