The Department of Education (DepEd) supports Every Child a Reader Program, which aims to
make every Filipino child a reader and a writer at his/her grade level. Thus, the DepEd through
the Bureau of Learning Delivery-Teaching and Learning Division (BLD-TLD) continue to
administer the Revised Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) assessment to learners
in public high schools nationwide.

One of its objectives is to use the Phil-IRI data to serve as one of the bases in planning,
designing/redesigning the reading instruction of the teachers and the school’s reading programs
or activities to improve the overall school’s reading performance.

Tictapul National High School order to attain the objectives of country's Education For All.
Based on the reading passages and findings of the Phil-IRI which was conducted in to all Grade
7 to 10 students, it showed that some of the students had poor comprehension skills in reading
and there are those reading levels were frustration.

By conducting remedial instructions to those identified poor in comprehension, the students

increased their reading levels from frustration to instructional and independent levels. The
teachers served as the reading coordinators who conducted remedial reading to those identified
students who had reading difficulties based on the Phil-IRI Pretest.

To assess the reading levels of the students, the Phil-IRI Pre-Test was conducted. The result of
the pretest
is shown in the graph below.

INDEPENDENT INSTRUCTIONAL FRUSTRATION

Interpretation:

For the pretest conducted on September 25, 2023, the data shows the number of readers in different
categories across 4 grades.
In Grade 7: 17% of the students are independent readers, meaning they can read on their own without
any help. The majority, 70%, are instructional readers. They can read with some guidance or help.
13% of the students fall into the frustration category, indicating they have difficulty reading even
with help.
In Grade 8: The percentage of independent readers increased slightly to 24%. The percentage of
instructional readers decreased to 63%, which could suggest that some students have moved from the
instructional category to the independent category. The frustration category remains almost the same
at 13%.
In Grade 9: The independent readers increased significantly to 29%, showing a positive trend in
reading ability. The percentage of instructional readers at 59%. The frustration readers decreased to
12%, showing an improvement in reading skills.
In Grade 10: The percentage of independent readers at 33%. The percentage of instructional readers
decreased slightly to 61%. The frustration readers decreased significantly to 6%, showing a
substantial improvement in reading skills.
Overall, it seems like there's a positive trend in reading skills from Grade 7 to Grade 10 with an
increase in independent readers and a decrease in frustration readers. However, the majority of
students across all grades still fall into the instructional category, indicating that they require some
assistance in reading.
