setting for a movie

T yler Ellis’s gorgeous French-style mansion in

Brentwood, a stone’s throw from Bel Air,
would make the perfect setting for a movie. And
she wouldn’t need to look far for the plot – no
further than her own life story, in fact. In this
peaceful spot, surrounded by greenery, she tells
us all about it.
Since hers is the name behind some of the
most popular handbags on the red carpet –
Princess Beatrice, Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, Cate
Blanchett and Selena Gomez are all fans – it’s no
surprise to hear that Tyler’s background was
creative. Her father was designer Perry Ellis, who
put sportswear on the fashion map; her mother is
TV screenwriter and producer Barbara Gallagher.
“My father was very advanced for his time
and so was my mother. She was a writer on The
Mary Tyler Moore Show and produced Saturday
Live. She was and is an elegant and very

interesting woman,” Tyler, 39, tells us.
Her parents may have had a lot in common,
but they weren’t a couple. Back in 1984,

when such arrangements were still rare,

 Tyler was born of their shared
wish to have a child.
It was a mutual friend who
introduced them. Perry, who
was gay, told Barbara he wanted
to be a father. Barbara, who was
39, told him she wanted to be a
mother and that she didn’t have
a partner, but was going to wait
a couple of years to see if she
could do it the traditional way.
As she was gorgeous and
Perry liked her all-American
look, he decided to see what
happened. And after a while,
they both decided that they’d
found the ideal candidate in
each other. They were right.
BATTLING ON

When almost ever yone was
wearing pretty, classic clothes,
he offered young people
unstructured designs with double
shoulder pads, wide trousers and
tops two sizes too big – pretty
much what you see on the street
these days. Now, original Perry
Ellis jumpers are collectors’ items.
Along with his creative side, he
was a savvy entrepreneur who had
studied business administration.
By the time he died, he had built
a multinational company with a
turnover of hundreds of millions
of dollars.

FAMILY TRAITS
“My mother says we have very
similar personalities: we both take
our profession very seriously,
dream big and are content only
with the best of the best,” Tyler says.
She laughs off suggestions that
she has inherited her parents’
talents. “I wish! What your parents
do provide, through your
upbringing, is your approach to
life and your work ethic.”

she decided to gain experience in

the industry by working as an
intern with Michael Kors.
“I started as an assistant at his
New York Fashion Week show,”
she says. “It was there, watching
Michael adding a belt or deciding
to raise a hemline by a centimetre,
that I discovered the value of
details, those little things that
change everything.
“Later, I spent some time in his
Madison Avenue store, behind
the counter. When I finally said
goodbye, I asked him for advice.
He told me: ‘Surround yourself
with the best team you can get.’”

IN THE BAG
She launched her own line of
bags, made in France, in 2011, and
called it Tyler Alexandra, her two
given names. “I had discovered to
my amazement that, all around
the world, the women carrying
luxury bags were all using the
same brands and practically
the same models,” she says.
“I said to myself: ‘It doesn’t make
sense.’ So I decided to make my
designs luxurious but also special,
unique and more modern.” 11
At first, finding artisans

to produce them proved a

 challenge. “The best and most sought-
after workshops were not interested in
a company as small as mine and
refused to consider working with me.
It was frustrating,” she recalls.
Finally, after three years of struggle,
she found a small factory in Florence,
where the owners, a father and son,
understood that she wanted quality,
not quantity. They use only the very
best materials and finishes, and
ever ything can be customised
according to the client’s taste.
“My bags are lined in a shade I call
‘Thayer blue’, in memory of Thayer
Avenue in Los Angeles, where I grew
up. It’s a vibrant shade, which makes
it much more practical than classic
black when you’re trying to find
something inside them,” she says.
“I don’t have a logo as such, but I
do use a little emblem of a pine cone,
which represents spiritual awakening,
and also a reproduction of my father’s
penmanship, taken from an envelope
he addressed to me on my first
birthday. That’s my tribute to him and
a way of having him by my side.”

MAJOR MILESTONE
Once she felt that her father could be
proud of her, she decided to include
h i m i n h e r c o m p a n y ’s n a m e ,
changing it to Tyler Ellis.
Today, her success is undisputed,
but she explains it with typical
modesty. “In the past few years,
following Michael Kors’s advice, I’ve
put together my perfect team and I’m
happy with the results. Honestly, I

the bag is a supporting actor, I fit in
with the couturier’s vision. I want my
clients to be happy; I don’t need to
be the most important,” she says.
Tyler credits her husband,
investment expert Ben Shriner,
for his support. He deals with the
finances and sometimes advises on
contracts or sales strategies. The
couple met in 2012, on a blind date
at a bar in New York. “He knew he
was going to meet me; I didn’t know
I would meet him,” she says. “We
immediately hit it off.
“Luckily, I was living in London at
the time, which meant we enjoyed a
friendship, which then turned into a
long-distance, slow, old-fashioned
courtship.
EMERALD ISLE HERITAGE
“We got married in 2014 and our
son arrived in 2021. I had a very easy
pregnancy and, as it was during the
Covid-19 pandemic, a very quiet one.
We chose the name FitzHarold Ellis
Shriner: Fitz because we both have
Irish backgrounds and it means ‘son
of our families’ in Irish, and Harold
after my maternal grandfather.”
Fitz is a cheerful soul, like his
mother, and just as active. She tells
us that he’s full of curiosity, a
“discoverer” who doesn’t like
conventional toys. His first word was
“car” – Bentleys are his favourites –
and “garage” was his second.
“So we’re off to a good start,” says
Tyler, who shares his passion.
“I’m lucky to be able to work
from home a lot, so I can enjoy his
childhood as much as possible.
Although I have an office close by,
I’m often with him right here in the
kitchen.”

She and Ben have created an
idyllic environment for Fitz to grow
up in. Having acquired the French-
style villa in 2017, they restored it for
family use before adding a new
guesthouse that is almost as large.
The result is beautiful, bold and
modern – entirely in keeping

S parks flew at the M&T Bank Stadium in
Baltimore as pop superstar Taylor Swift’s
Love Story with boyfriend Travis Kelce
continued its winning streak.
The smitten couple, who first went public
with their relationship in October last year,
enjoyed a passionate kiss after Travis’s
American football team – the Kansas City
Chiefs – defeated the Baltimore Ravens 17-10.
It was a sweet moment for the lovebirds,
who didn’t hide their affection as they
celebrated. While Travis, 34, waited for the
AFC Championship trophy presentation, an
emotional Taylor, also 34, made her way
down to the pitch to congratulate her beau.
In clips that went viral, she was seen wrapping
her arms around Travis’s neck, before
puckering up for a romcom-worthy kiss.
The Shake it Off singer co-ordinated her
outfit with the Chiefs player’s kit in a scarlet
jumper teamed with a black miniskirt, sheer
tights and thigh-grazing leather boots. She

football star mentioning the pop sensation on his weekly podcast, New Heights, which has been a pop of punchy red lipstick – her trademark

A BLOSSOMING ROMANCE
The hottest new celebrity couple have been
going from strength to strength since they
made their debut as a duo towards the end of
last year. Rumours started swirling after the
Taylor was spotted at a Chiefs game in New
Jersey. She turned up at another game a
month later, in October, alongside a string of
A-list pals including Sophie Turner, Blake
Lively and Hugh Jackman.
While the lovers have kept much of their
budding romance under wraps, both Taylor
and Travis have offered glimpses inside their
relationship. During a recent interview with
Journall, the Chiefs tight end

said: “Everybody knows I’m a family guy. Her
team is her family. Her family does a lot of
stuff in terms of the tour, the marketing,
being around, so I think she has a lot of those
values as well, which is right up my alley.”

Mollie Pearce is back in her comfort
zone. The resilient 22-year-old had the
nation watching through their fingers
in horror as she was taken in by
treacherous Harry in the finale of the
BBC’s smash hit series The Traitorss last
week, finishing as runner-up.
But although many would struggle
to bounce back from such a crushing
moment – and the associated loss of a
potential fortune – Harry’s betrayal is
nothing compared with what she has
already had to contend with in her life,
and she’s got it all in perspective now.
“I never went in there thinking I
was going to win,” she tells hello!
hello!..
“Getting my story out there, spreading
some awareness about stomas, meant
more to me than actually winning.”
From the age of 11, Mollie struggled
with ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory
condition that had a dramatic impact
on her health, leaving her constantly ill
and unable to lead a normal life. At 18,
her condition became so serious that
she needed surgery to remove her
colon, leaving her with a stoma bag.

“Before the surgery, I struggled to
come to terms with the fact that I was
going to have a bag for the rest of my
life. But I’ve been given a taste of life,”
she says. “I would rather have this bag
stuck to me forever than go back to
how I was living before.”

TACKLING TABOOS
For Mollie, the idea of having a stoma
bag was a huge taboo. “We look at it as
something disgusting. You have this
negative opinion – I did, anyway. I want
to change that and make people realise
that it can have a positive effect. It’s not
the worst thing in the world. I call mine
Sid,” she says with a laugh. “You can
even get jumpers for them – it’s cute.”
The condition inevitably affected
Mollie’s confidence during her teenage
years. She was also born with missing
digits on her right hand.
However, she turned this to her
advantage by embarking on a career as
a disability model. She hadn’t realised
that such a career was possible until,
while out shopping in Primark with her
mum, she saw a photo of a model with
one hand and thought: “If I can do
that, I would love to do it.”
She initially joined Models of
Diversity aged 16, before being signed
up to the inclusive agency Zebedee
Inclusive Talent Agency in 2019 after a
casting meeting in London.
“Disability modelling was just
becoming more of a thing, so it was
the perfect time for me,” says Mollie,
18 who has since starred in campaigns
for Tommy Hilfiger, Kurt Geiger

and Adidas, to name a few.

it.” I needed that’
Her mum also made sure Mollie
didn’t let anything stop her when it
came to romance. “She always used to
say: ‘Someone will love you for who you
are. This gives you a head start, because
you can filter out the bad ones before
you even speak to them,’” she says.
The model certainly found a good
one in her boyfriend Max Backwell, 25.
Her partner of over two years is a friend
of her older brother Sam, and the trio
would hang out together before Max
asked her brother whether he would
mind if the pair dated.
“We were at Max’s one night and he
said to my brother: ‘Mate, I actually fancy
your sister – is that all right?’ I think for
my brother, he’d rather have a friend
around the house. They get on so well.
When we go on trips away, he’s got his
best mate there, so it’s perfect.”
And Max is also the perfect partner
when it comes to Mollie’s differences.
“He doesn’t care about my stoma at all.
He would stick a bag on his stomach on

I f there’s one person who knows about
ditching the winter gloom and flying
somewhere more appealing, it’s Tamara
Ecclestone. Little wonder, then, that she was
among the VIP guests at a special screening
of new children’s film Migration, about a
family of wild ducks.

and three-year-old Serena, who posed happily

P roof that what happens
in Vegas doesn’t always
stay in Vegas, last week Adele
announced plans to follow up
her sell-out residency at the
Colosseum at Caesars Palace
with a series of concerts in
Germany. And Rumour Has It
the shows will be a scaled-up
version of her Las Vegas gigs.
The singer shared the news
on Instagram, explaining
that her decision had been
prompted by the possibility of
creating a “pop-up stadium
designed around whatever
show I want to put on”. The
result was revealed to be four
dates in Munich, which Adele
called “a bit random, but still
fabulous”.
On Instagram, she told fans:
“I haven’t played in Europe
since 2016! I couldn’t think
of a more wonderful way to
spend my summer and end
this beautiful phase of my
life and career with shows
closer to home.”
The announcement came
after Adele posted photos from
Weekend 36 of her residency,
which comes to an end in June.
She recently called putting the
show together “a labour of
love, on another level” and
was heavily involved in the
production process, famously
postponing at the last minute
because, as she later explained,
“there was just no soul in it”.
Finally kicking off in November
2022, Adele has called the
shows “a truly extraordinary,
restorative experience”.

blended whisky he launched last summer, is

singer decided to check it out for himself –

Sir Rod is famously proud of his Scottish
heritage, though it wasn’t the Western Isles
but the booze aisle that he headed for when
he and his wife Penny Lancaster dropped

debut hitting the big screen, you’d
have thought Dua Lipa would
have no trouble finding a date.
While she appears to have found
love with British actor and Masters
of the Air star Callum Turner now,
the singer says she’s had the same
problems as many other women
when it comes to men – so much
so that her experience has inspired
her new single.
“I had been on a string of bad
dates, and the last one was the
final straw,” says Dua, 28. “The
next morning, I arrived at the
studio and immediately declared:
‘Training season is over.’
“And like the best day-after
debriefs with your mates, we had a
lot of laughs and it all quickly
came together from there.”
Explaining the meaning of
the song’s title, she continues:
“Although it’s about that feeling
when you’re absolutely done with
telling people – men specifically,
in this case – how to date you right,
it’s also about my training season
being over and me growing with
every experience.
“I have never felt more
confident, clear or empowered.
And while it may be that training
season is never over for any of us,
you start to see the beauty in
finding that person to experience
it with. You stop looking for the
trainees and become more
interested in finding someone to
grow with.”

GOING PUBLIC
Dua’s relationship with Callum
certainly seems to be growing. Last
week, they were spotted stepping
out for coffee in Beverly Hills with
their arms around each other and
Callum, 33, was seen planting a
loving kiss on Dua’s head.
Rumours of the couple’s
romance had been swirling since
they were seen together at a party
for Masters of the Air, Air , Steven
Spielberg and Tom Hanks’s new
Apple TV series, in which Callum
stars alongside Elvis ’s Austin Butler,

always been plain sailing, Dua –

as well as excited to be asked to do
this, but I’m grateful that Matthew
[Vaughn, the film’s director] had
that kind of faith and belief in me.
“I had such a blast. Everyone
was so supportive: Henry, John,
Ariana. Everybody was so lovely
and generous. I feel as though
they held my hand through it all,
John especially.”

BACK ON STAGE

Sunday’s Grammys, Dua is also
looking forward to performing
at next month’s Brit Awards,
where she has been nominated
for three gongs, potentially
adding to the six she has
already won.
“Music has always been and
will always be my first love,”
says Dua, who was born in
London to Kosovan-Albanian
parents and landed a record
contract at 18 after uploading
her songs to YouTube.
“There is so much love for
Barbie and so much effort put
into the film and the music. I
love that everyone reacted to
it so positively. I’m proud to be
a small part of it.”
Meanwhile, she is touring
Europe in the summer and her
next album, which features her
new single, is due for release later
this year.
“It’s a pop record and it’s
definitely got a dancey vibe but
it’s more psychedelic,” she says. “I
really wanted to change it up a
little bit, because I never want to
repeat myself. I feel as though it
reflects a certain time in my life.
It’s a very personal album; I’m so
excited about it.
“I think I have changed a lot,
I’ve learnt a lot and grown up a
lot. Writing songs and making
music has got me through so
many things in my life. Things
have changed a lot but in a
good way. I’m very grateful.”

T hey say the apple doesn’t fall
far from the tree, and that
certainly seems to be the case for
Zara and Mike Tindall’s younger
daughter Lena.
The King’s five-year-old great-
niece stole the show at the Rugby
for Heroes charity fun run in
Gloucestershire, taking part with
her rugby union ace father. He
attended as patron of the charity,
which helps military veterans.
Tackling a challenging 5km
(three-mile) course, Lena was in
her element, braving the cold with
a beaming smile.
She’d donned patterned
leggings, a purple puffer jacket, a
red charity T-shirt and cute cat-face
gloves for the event, which took
place near the family’s home on
the Gatcombe Park estate.
Mike, 45, also went for
sportswear in a padded black
jacket, grey joggers and a matching
charity T-shirt.
Father and daughter had a blast,
with Mike jogging beside Lena as
they navigated the course, holding
her hand and spurring her on
when the going proved a challenge.
Following their success, the pair
were all smiles as they celebrated
with their gleaming medals.

GOING FOR GOLD

Sport is an integral part of the
Tindall household. Skilled
equestrian Zara won a team silver
medal at the 2012 Olympics,
while Mike was a key member of
England’s 2003 Rugby World Cup-
winning squad.
Lena and her siblings – Mia, ten,
and Lucas, who turns three next
month, are also keen, with Mike
telling hello! last year: “Both Mia
and Lena go to Minchinhampton
Rugby Club on a Sunday… They
love all sports.”

DEATH ANNOUNCED
from cancer at the age of 50, after bravely living
with the disease for over three years.
The heartbreaking news was announced on his
Instagram page last week in a post remembering the
Escape to the Countryy star’s “kindness, warmth, and
infectious spirit” and saying his family were asking for
privacy as they navigated their “immeasurable grief”.
Jonnie first revealed that his cancer was terminal in
a moving and emotional interview with hello! in
November 2022. Two years earlier, he had been
diagnosed with lung cancer, which had spread to his
brain. It was while he was filming in Italy for A Place in
the Sun that he first began to suspect that something
might be wrong with his health.
“Within a week of flying back from filming, I was
being given six months to live,” he told hello!
hello!.. “I
had to go home and tell my wife, who was looking
after our babies, that she was on her own, pretty
much. That was devastating. All I could do was
apologise to her. I felt so responsible.”
But Jonnie, who shared son Rex, now five, and
three-year-old twins Rafa and Cormac, with his wife
Jessica, 41, tried to stay positive about his diagnosis –
and in November he celebrated his 50th birthday.

TRIUMPHING OVER ADVERSITY

“I never thought I’d be here for this, so I’m chuffed to
bits,” Jonnie told us at the time. “I view it as a complete
triumph. I have been spending all day with the kids.
This morning I couldn’t get out of bed, but I’m not
sorry and I’ll do it again. I’ll rest when I absolutely
need to but I’ll have fun until I drop.”
Jonnie and Jess married in 2016 following a
whirlwind romance, after they’d been introduced by a
friend less than a year earlier. The TV star popped the
question following a hike to the top of the Red Fort in
Jaipur, India, and the couple wed a few months later.
The devoted parents put their children first and
were determined to carry on with life as usual for their
sakes after Jonnie’s diagnosis. In an interview with
hello! last June to celebrate Father’s Day, Jonnie
revealed that they had chosen not to tell their sons
about their dad’s illness. “I keep being asked: ‘Are you
going to tell them?’ but tell them what?” Jonnie asked.
“It would be horrible news that they’d have to get
their heads around.”
Tributes swiftly flooded in after the announcement,
with Jonnie’s A Place in the Sun colleague Lucy
Alexander posting: “A true legend. RIP Jonnie.” H

intimate event, he said: “Over the
years I have met so many young
people whose lives have been
impacted by the work of the
Prince’s Trust.”
The Irish-American actor – he
became a US citizen in 2004 – went
on to say: “To see this work grow
from its success in the UK to more
than 20 countries around the
world, and now here in the USA, is
fantastic. I cannot wait to meet
many more young people who
have been given the chance to
succeed against the odds.”
SUPPORTING YOUNG PEOPLE
Other British stars there to support
the charity included X-Men n star
Nicholas Hoult and writer and
comedian Stephen Fry, who wore a
blue jacket with a tie as colourful as
Dame Joan’s dress.
Reflecting on his involvement,
Stephen said: “Put simply, the
Prince’s Trust has transformed over
one million young people’s lives,
and I am delighted to support their
mission to support many more.
“Over 30 years ago I started to
support the work of the Prince’s
Trust. I believed then, as I do now,
our future generations need our
support to fulfil their dreams and it

Since its launch in 1976, the
Prince’s Trust has helped more
than 1.2 million young people in
the UK and beyond, supporting

A s she looks forward to spending half-term

with her three children, the Princess of
Wales will be breathing a sigh of relief.
After a fortnight in hospital following
abdominal surgery, she is finally surrounded by
her loved ones and “making good progress” as
she continues her extended recovery. “She’s
relieved to be home,” a friend tells hello!
hello!..
With Prince George, ten, Princess Charlotte,
eight, and five-year-old Prince Louis all at school
during the first few weeks of her convalescence,
she has been able to rest and recuperate at
Adelaide Cottage, the family’s four-bedroom
home on the King’s Windsor estate.
Her husband the Prince of Wales has been by
her side throughout, while also shouldering the
responsibility of school runs and carrying out
the more physical aspects of parenting.

IN SAFE HANDS
It’s an idyllic spot in which Kate can focus on
her health in privacy, and although the royal
couple have no live-in staff, they are well
supported by their team.
This includes their loyal and long-serving
personal assistant Natasha Archer – seen driving
away from The London Clinic after the Princess
was discharged last month – and María Turrión,
the Norland nanny who has worked for the Kate is happy to be back at the family home –

Kate, who is famously active and
outdoorsy, may have to put on hold
her regular runs in Windsor Great
Park and her trampolining sessions
with the children while she heals.
But her team are in close contact
with all the organisations of which
she is patron and are also taking
updates from her key work projects,
including the Royal Foundation
Centre for Early Childhood, as they
look ahead to her return to work.
The timing of that will depend
on medical advice, according to a
royal source.
hello! understands that Kate’s
focus is on her recuperation, but
when she feels stronger, she will
want to catch up with her projects.
Meanwhile, Prince William
returns to work this week for
the first time since 11 January. We
understand that he will carry out a
small number of engagements while
continuing to spend time with Kate
and their family at home. Aides
have said the couple will not travel
overseas in the coming months.

and about while the King is
recuperating,” a royal source tells
us. “She has twin responsibilities:
on the one hand, helping support
him in his recovery, but also
keeping the show on the road.”
At 76, Camilla might be forgiven
for wanting to postpone some
of her visits to take care of her
husband and get some rest herself.
But the source adds: “She thinks it’s
good for the institution for her to
be seen out and about while the
King is indisposed.
“She’s also determined to be
there for the causes that are dear to
her. There was no question of her
cancelling anything.
“She’s a tremendously resilient
woman and she’s quite fit. She loves
being around people and she likes
going out to work.”

on, doing his best,” as she met donors,
patients and staff at a new Maggie’s cancer
support centre at the Royal Free Hospital
in North London.
In Bath a day later, she was cheered by
900 schoolchildren from seven local
primary schools who screamed “Camilla!”
as she arrived, and waved Union flags.
She was there to attend a service at
Bath Abbey to mark 850 years of St John’s
Foundation – another of the organisations
of which she is patron – after a visit to
elderly residents supported by the charity,
during which she said the King was
“recovering well”.
Camilla also shared her favourite
hobbies, telling the group: “I can
recommend Silver Swans ballet for older
people. The first one I ever came to was in
Bath. You ought to try it, it’s wonderful.”
And she said of gardening: “It gets
everybody outside. I find it the most
relaxing thing in the world – you come in
and everything starts stiffening up. It’s
worth it.”

The busy Queen had begun her week by
meeting 20 authors, including Sebastian
Faulks, Sir Tom Stoppard, Alan Bennett,
Dame Jacqueline Wilson and Charlie
Mackesy, at Windsor Castle to admire
miniature books that they had created to
mark the 100th anniversary of Queen
Mary’s Doll’s House.
Her Majesty had handwritten her own
tiny book for the display of items from the
1:12-scale replica Edwardian home, which
was presented to Queen Mary in 1924.
She told guests: “These new books
highlight the richness of 21st-century
literary talent and show how fortunate we
are to have so many outstanding writers,
whose work brings joy, comfort, laughter,
companionship and hope, opening our
eyes to others’ experiences and
reminding us that we are not alone.” H

L azing on a palm-fringed beach as the azure

sun, Davina McCall admits it’s a hard job,
holidaying in the Maldives.
“It was very difficult, obviously,” she says,
grinning. “My kids were like: ‘What? You’re
going where? Without us?’”
Looking fabulous in a range of swimsuits and
sun dresses, the mother of three and former Big
other presenter is modelling for a shoot on the

South Malé Atoll.
Luckily, her partner, celebrity hairstylist
Michael Douglas, was able to join her. “I was
very lucky because my boyfriend also does my
hair, so we got to go as a couple. We had an

than clung on to my legs and never
wanted to leave.”

the empty nest, to understand that
letting go of something is the birth
of something else.
“And once you’ve let go of your
kids, and they’ve gone on to live
their lives, you can start thinking:
‘Well, what do I want to do with this
next act?’
“I’ve met so many women who
are fulfilling lifelong dreams of

travelling or setting up businesses, work in to feel good”, she says – but she is less concerned about her
doing all the things they weren’t image as she gets older. “I feel less encumbered by self-obsession,”

look like, less about what people

“A friend of mine started a thing
called the Zero F**ks Club, and I
was like: ‘I’m joining that!’”
Not caring what you look like is
easier, though, when you have a
figure like Davina’s – which is “part
genetic, but also hard work”, she
admits. “I watch what I eat and try
to exercise three times a week at
least, so you do have to put the work
in to feel good about yourself – or
for me to feel good about myself.”
LOVE AGAIN
It must also help that she has found
love again. A year or so after her
divorce from her children’s father,
Matthew Robertson, Davina fell in
love with Michael, 50, previously
married with two children, who had
been styling her hair for 20 years.
The pair present a podcast, Making
Cut, and often appear together

on Celebrity Gogglebox.

But she dismisses the idea that
looking good has anything to do with
being in love. “It’s not about being in
a relationship, because lots of women
end up not being in a relationship,”
she says. “It’s about self-love: how you 57
feel about yourself, and that

me and hear me, and I’m
going to be opinionated”’
“In midlife, you can begin to feel invisible, and
do you lean into that? Some people probably
enjoy slipping into the shadows – or are you
somebody who thinks: ‘No, I don’t want to feel
like that’?”
She makes an interesting comparison between
teenagers and midlifers, both of whom can be
victims of their hormones.
“We’re all attention-seekers when we’re
teenagers, because we feel invisible, and when we
turn into second-springers, we seek the same level
of attention because we feel invisible again.
“We get there and think: ‘You’re going to see
me and hear me, and I’m going to be opinionated.’
Just look at Miriam Margoyles!” she cries, naming
the controversial actress loved (and feared) for
her outrageous candour.
58 “Sometimes you might not agree with what
she’s saying, but the lovely thing about being an
older statesperson is that you’re allowed an
opinion, and I don’t mind if it’s different from
mine,” she adds.
“Younger people are terrified of having an
opinion in case they get cancelled. But somebody
older is like: ‘I don’t care; I’m just going to say it.’”
STARTING AGAIN
Her passion for championing the over-50s is clear
from her reality TV show My Mum, Your Dad, Dad, in
which teenage children play matchmakers for
their middle-aged, single parents.
“I love it so much. It was so heartwarming,” says
Davina, who will be presenting a second series of
the hit show. “I looked at all the contestants and
thought: ‘You are my people.’
“It’s so exciting as you don’t see them represented
on TV anywhere – but they’re fun, they’re vibrant
and they want to get dressed up and talk about
relationships, sex and how they feel.”
Her role as brand ambassador for Tui’s global
hotel label, Tui Blue, is another job she was
thrilled to throw herself into.
Staying at its Olhuveli Romance hotel, the
presenter spent a week with the resort’s guides
and hosts, sampling some of the holiday pastimes
on offer.
“I’m not very good at lying down and doing
nothing for a week – I need activities,” says Davina,
who enjoyed a lesson from the hotel chef in
Maldivian cooking, joined an exercise session by
the ocean and discovered the spectacular marine
inhabitants of a deserted shipwreck.
“We went on an hour’s boat ride into the
middle of nowhere and I was thinking: ‘Where are
we going?’ I couldn’t see anything. Then you
could see a mast sticking out of the water. We all
got in and went snorkelling around it – the sea life
is unbelievable.”
Her partner Michael was also able to join her.
“Well, he was supposed to be working, but he

came out on the boat – he can’t do much to my

hair when I’m under water,” she points out.

Now back in the UK, Davina is focusing on
her next major project – her own lingerie
brand, Sessi, which launches in April and has
already been snapped up by M&S.
“It’s been interesting but also incredibly scary
and difficult because I’m not a businesswoman
at all; I’m learning as we go,” she says.
“As you get into midlife, your brain works in a
certain way: multi-tasking becomes harder. But I
like learning new things, as it’s easy to get into a
lazy mindset where keeping the status quo is a
comfortable place to be.
“Don’t go quietly,” she cautions with a
smile. “And don’t keep the status quo.” H

avina McCall has told hello! about her “fun

D day” at Buckingham Palace after receiving an
MBE from the Princess Royal as her proud
boyfriend and daughter looked on.
The presenter and campaigner, a fervent
royalist who wrote to Queen Elizabeth II as a child,
beamed with joy last week as Princess Anne
presented her award for services to broadcasting,
in recognition of her three-decade TV career.
“I’m so pleased it was her,” Davina told us after
the ceremony. “When I was growing up, she was
60 always the girl who could do everything a bloke
could do – sailing, riding. She was so capable and
inspiring for that.”
Davina, 56, who wore a blue floral Rebecca
Vallance dress with a blue velvet hat by Camilla
Rose Millinery and Gina stiletto heels, added:
“Buckingham Palace is obviously something else.
Somebody quite brilliantly said to us on the way
in: ‘Keep looking up because the ceilings are part
of the best bit,’ and they weren’t wrong.
“The other thing that was so nice was being
with all the other people getting their honours
and finding out a bit about them, like how did
they get theirs and what did they do?
“It’s just a really fun day and we were all so
supportive of each other in the queue. It was a
lovely day.”
The star, who was joined by her daughter Holly
Robertson, 22, and hairdresser partner Michael
Douglas, 50, also passed on her best wishes to the
King and the Princess of Wales following their
recent operations.
CALMING HER NERVES
“I was absolutely terrified – I was really nervous –
but she made it easy,” Davina said of Anne in a TV
interview. “I went through so many emotions. It’s
the waiting that’s so nice; you get to talk to other
people who are getting awards. That calmed me
down, because I had been very quiet all day –
which, as you can imagine, is not usual for me. I
 ‘I’m so pleased it was Anne.

couldn’t say the word ‘honour’ earlier because
I couldn’t stop crying every time I said it.”
Davina has previously revealed that she is a
huge royal fan who has been writing to members
of the family since she was eight.
“It is a little bit weird,” she said. “I started off
with a letter to the Queen; I got a letter with wax
on the back. I then wrote to Princess Margaret and
to Princess Diana after the Panoramaama interview.

second are childhood sweethearts
reuniting after two decades and the
third are parents whose daughter
has locked herself in the bathroom
on her wedding day.
Theatregoers have been paying
up to £300 for tickets, with
champagne packages selling for
£395, although the show has
received mixed reviews.

HONING HIS CRAFT
“Performing on stage and acting is something that
I’m passionate about,” says Raff, who showed his
dedication to the part by spending an extra hour
and a half in make-up each day to cover his 30-
plus tattoos before the cameras rolled.
“They had to airbrush my whole body,” he
recalls. “I had a crazy year of getting so many; my
mum has said I’m banned from getting any more.
But I don’t regret them. I’ve got silly ones like a
jelly baby and loads of random ones.”

His passion for acting, he says, stems from his
love of learning new things and taking on new

play 1940s blues harmonica. It’s amazing to learn

I feel really honoured to be playing Master
Sergeant Ken.”
There are, of course, “positives and hindrances”
in being born into a famous family, particularly
when following in your parents’ footsteps.
Raff’s acting credentials have been scrutinised
and he has faced abuse on social media, but
having developed a thick skin, he accepts his
situation for what it is.
“At the end of the day, that is my life. My family
are my family and that isn’t going to change,” he
says with a shrug.
“As long as I know what I want to do, and that is
act in some really great series and films, that’s
what I will do.”
He spent his teenage years struggling to find his
way, but it was the advice of his parents to

“It’s made me really want to
speak out about mental health,
not only in regard to men but
women as well,” he says.
There have been times when
he admits he “felt down”, but he
discovered that reducing sugar,
pizza and pasta, and regular
exercise, improved his mood.
“Some people may laugh if
they hear me talking about
meditating, but it makes me a
better person, more present and
productive,” he says.
“You need to look after
yourself.” H

Fitness coach Joe Wicks has
announced that his wife Rosie

his wife’s growing bump.
“Baby number 4 incoming #20 weeks,” he
wrote in a caption. The couple, who married in

Ramsay writing: “Such fabulous news, so happy for

Rodrigo has been removed
from TikTok after Universal
Music Group failed to strike a
new licensing agreement with
the social media site.
The songs were taken off
the popular app after an
existing deal came to an end.
Other stars whose music has been pulled include
Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish and Justin Bieber.
The record company accused TikTok of
promoting established stars on the site, while
removing developing artists. In an open letter,
Universal Music Group wrote: “TikTok proposed
paying our artists at a rate that is a fraction of the rate
that similarly situated major social platforms pay.”
TikTok responded by saying the label was
promoting a “false narrative and rhetoric”.
She continued: “As the road to resuming
my performing career continues, I have
[realised] how much I have missed it and
being able to see my fans.
“During this absence, I decided I wanted
to document this part of my life, to try to
raise awareness of this little-known
condition, to help others who share this
diagnosis.” The documentary is billed as an
“emotional, energetic and poetic love letter
to music”.
The My Heart Will Go On singer first
spoke publicly about her rare neurological
disorder in December 2022.
Last May, she cancelled her planned
world tour, telling fans: “I’m so sorry to
disappoint all of you once again. It’s not fair
to you to keep postponing the shows, and
even though it breaks my heart, it’s best
that we cancel everything until I’m really
ready to be back on stage again.”
Although a release date for the film has
yet to be announced, it is believed that it
will be out later this year.

Draper to rest at the same North London church
where they married almost 19 years ago.
Wearing a long black coat, a string of pearls and
Derek’s watch on her wrist, the broadcaster
followed Derek’s flower-covered coffin inside the
church of St Mary the Virgin in Primrose Hill,
while daughter Darcey, 17, bravely took on the
role of pallbearer.
Among the dozens of mourners joining the
family at the requiem mass on Friday morning was
Sir Elton John, who was with husband David

hands/Let me fly to distant lands.”

A SUPPORTIVE FRIENDSHIP
The pop legend and Kate became friends after
he reached out to her when Derek fell gravely
ill. She told of her surprise at receiving a phone
call out of the blue, in which Sir Elton offered to
find information about antiviral drugs.
Last April, he invited Kate, Derek and the
children to be special guests at his farewell show
at London’s O2 Arena, where he dedicated his
hit song Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me to
them, telling the crowd that they had endured
“really tough times”.
The funeral was followed by a private
committal and burial.
Derek, 56, fell seriously ill at the start of the
pandemic in March 2020, and spent a year in

hospital before returning to the family home,

where loyal Kate devoted her life to caring for
him. He was confined to a wheelchair and
needed care around the clock. The political
lobbyist turned psychotherapist died last month
after suffering a heart attack before Christmas,
brought on by his long battle with the effects of
the virus.
Kate announced the sad news in a heartfelt

the heartbreaking but inspiring
story of her visit to Turkey
last year, during which she
saw the aftermath of the
devastating earthquakes that
struck the south of the country
and neighbouring Syria. Syria.

‘
When earthquakes ripped
through Turkey and Syria last
February, more than 55,000 people
were killed and 2.7 million were
forced from their homes.
Visiting eight months after the
disaster, I was shocked by the level of
devastation that was still visible. I saw
endless mountains of rubble and
damaged buildings, with families
and children living on the side of the
road among the ruins in tents and
containers. It was the end of October
and you could already feel the cold
coming in.
It was heartbreaking but also
astonishing to meet these
extraordinary people, who showed
so much resilience in the aftermath
of the disaster, which at the time
received a lot of global attention. But
because there’s so much going on in
the world, including conflict in Israel
and war in Ukraine, it feels as if these
people have been forgotten.
That’s why I wanted to shine a
light on the disaster, particularly in
Hatay and Adiyaman, two of the
worst-hit provinces, and the work The model joins a colourful play
that Save the Children is doing to session designed to help children
help these families rebuild their recover from trauma in Adiyaman
lives by providing much-needed province (also pictured above)
facilities, such as showers and toilets,
as well as mental health support,
hygiene kits and winter supplies.

TRIUMPH OF HOPE
I felt overwhelmed by how
welcoming people were, and how
open and honest they were in
sharing their experiences with me. I
was inspired by their resilience and
their strength to look to the future.
They had lost everything – their
loved ones, their homes and all their
belongings – yet amid their shattered
lives, I saw hope.
One woman I will never forget.
We were distributing tarpaulins to
help insulate the containers people
were living in when we met Sefika, a
grandmother in her 80s, who was
living in one of them with her
grandson Yucel.
He was around eight or nine, and
had lost both his parents in the 79
earthquake. She had lost her

daughter and son-in-law but was

 wonder fully resilient, with a
twinkle in her eye.
I met another woman, Munira,
with her nine-month-old daughter
Hiba, at a nutrition session run
by TEMAS, an organisation that
works alongside Save the Children
to create safe places for women
to learn about looking after
newborns and how to breastfeed.
They can also visit to socialise and
talk to other mothers who’ve gone
through similar experiences.

Another of the jobs I took part
in was distributing hygiene kits,
including items such as shampoo
and soap, as well as menstrual
products. We can pop down to our
local shop to pick up these things,
privilege, and that I’m able to tell
people about this situation and
encourage them to open their eyes.
I’m on the board for an annual
Save the Children fundraiser – we’ve
raised around £7m in seven years –
so that when these emergencies
occur, we can respond quickly. It’s
about spreading the word, which is
process what I’ve experienced. And
when I shut my eyes and think about
Turkey, I remember the extraordinary
resilience, hope and strength of
the people who need our help.

o you ever stop to look
at the birds?” Elsa Pataky
asks with a smile. It may seem like
an odd question, but under the
circumstances, it isn’t at all. The
actress and model has just arrived
in Spain from her home in
Australia and plans to repeat the
24-hour journey within days.
It’s an exhausting schedule, but
she looks fabulous. That’s because
she’s filled with enthusiasm for
the project that brings her here,
but also eager to get back to her
husband, actor Chris Hemsworth,
and their three children. And
when Elsa asks about the birds, it’s
a clue to her success in life.
“I’m always looking at them,”
she says. “I’m on the move all day,
so I force myself to stop and see the
little things that bring happiness.”
At 47, she’s as committed as
ever to her career, but she’s more
serene, she says, because she’s
better able to prioritise. She’s in
Spain for a project that means a lot
to her – teaming up with Biotherm.
Sporty and committed to ocean
conservation, Elsa couldn’t be a
better fit for a beauty brand known
for its marine-based products. Its
push for “health betterment” –
looking, feeling and acting better
– is certainly something she shares.

“I’m always full of energy, but I’m
living each day as it comes. As you
get older, your ambitions are no
longer the same. It’s about trying to
do things consciously so they fulfil
you, not rushing through them as if

Do you still set yourself challenges?
“If I do, it’s for the children to be
happy. They’re growing up – India
is 12 this year and her twin brothers,
Sasha and Tristan, will turn ten.
“They have a lot of questions
about life and you don’t know if
you can give the right answers to
everything, but you have to try.”
You’ve just teamed up with

He spends a lot of time outdoors,
so he protects it a lot. Sometimes
we share one of my serums.”
How are you coping with ageing?
“Age gives you maturity, wisdom
and experience, and I wouldn’t
trade those for anything. That said,
if you asked me whether I’d like to
have the skin I did in my 20s, of
course I would.”
There’s a concept called “well-
ageing” – having a healthy
approach, physically and mentally…
“That makes sense. Striving to

look younger is stressful, and stress
ages you, so it’s counterproductive.
It’s better to say: ‘I’m going to do
everything in my power to feel
good and be healthy,’ but accept
the passage of time.”
How do you take care of your
mental health?
“I think therapy – talking about the
emotional baggage we all carry, with
a person who knows how to help –
is liberating. I’ve done it.”
What are your fears?
“I’m afraid of losing vitality; I want
to be able to keep up with my
children and do the sports I

Are you still a great team?
“Yes, but it’s not always easy.
Marriages require a lot of time and
work: they’re built little by little
from good moments, incredible
moments and other, more difficult
ones. I think that’s beautiful.
“I’ve learnt a lot – to be less
stubborn, to calm down and to get
to know my husband.”
What is his real-life superpower?

like I couldn’t really complain, but there was
enough going on that it was obviously
perimenopause. I was experiencing low-level
anxiety, not feeling joy in lots of things, feeling
‘meh’ about stuff and being a bit more irritable.
“Then everything felt dry – my hair and skin
– and no amount of moisturiser was changing
that. I’ve always loved exercise and training but
it felt harder to do, I wasn’t able to gain or keep
muscle in the same way and it wasn’t giving me
the same emotional lift. Now I know that’s to
do with the drop-off of hormones.”
THE TREATMENTS I LOVE
“It’s a combination of things. I went on bio-
identical HRT – Oestrogel, Testogel and
progesterone. Also, taking supplements like
Menopace, where everything is designed to
help the most common symptoms, that was
important to me. Then I looked at foods and
drinks – I’m not a massive drinker, but I
definitely wasn’t responding well to alcohol.

“When your metabolism slows down and

mindlessly. I love food and eating well, but I’ve
realised that sometimes portions have got to be
a bit smaller. I’m a three-solid-meals-a-day
person. For breakfast, I’ll have protein, some
kind of fish and green vegetable or high-
protein Greek yoghurt with fruit, nuts and
seeds. For lunch today, my daughter, bless her,
made this jamboree of spinach, chicken and
mushrooms and called it a protein bowl. It
wasn’t that big a portion and I realised I
didn’t actually need bigger than what she
gave me. However, when you feed your kids
and husband, you’re in the habit of eating
massive portions. I certainly am in our house.
“Tonight, my son is home and wants
spaghetti bolognese. It’s a family favourite, but
I don’t have red meat very often. I tend to have
fish, white meat or vegetarian meals.”
MAKE TIME FOR MOVEMENT
“I love Pilates because you’re using your own
body weight. I also try to do two sessions a
week using weights, and last year I was cycling
loads. Now I’m doing more running because
I’m doing a half-marathon. My body’s not
really built for running so I find that
challenging, but it’s good to do something
that’s out of your comfort zone.
“You’ve got to keep pushing yourself and be
a bit uncomfortable with exercise. If it all feels

too easy, then you’re not actually developing
anything. I also love a cold-water swim at the
weekend, or cold showers. It’s really good for
inflammation, which is important for all kinds
of illnesses and diseases. Immunity can drop a
lot for people during menopause, so you have
to be mindful.”

Your valentine

by these gin cocktail
and gin-infused
sweet treats
RASPBERRY RIPPLE MERINGUE KISSES
Enjoy these with a Mon Cheri
cocktail (see recipe overleaf).
INGREDIENTS
• 2 large egg whites
• 150g/5oz golden
caster sugar
• Pink food-colouring gel
• Yellow food-colouring gel
For the filling
• 150ml/¼pt double cream
• 50ml/2fl oz Eden Mill Love Gin
• 2 tbsp icing sugar
• 60g/2½oz fresh raspberries
C U LT U R E
1. Preheat the oven to 120°C,
fan 100°C, gas 1 and line 2
large baking trays with non-stick
greaseproof paper.
2. Place the egg whites in a
large, clean mixing bowl and
whisk for 5 minutes until stiff peaks
form. Add the sugar to the egg
whites a tablespoon at a time,
continuing to whisk until the sugar
is well incorporated and the mixture
is glossy and stiff.
3. Add a large star nozzle to a
piping bag. Using a paint brush

Makes 20 Takes 50-55 minutes
and the food colouring gel, paint
3 pink stripes and 3 yellow stripes
on the inside of the piping bag,
starting at the nozzle end.
4. Spoon the meringue into the
piping bag and pipe 40 rosettes
around 3cm/1¼in wide onto the
baking trays, leaving some space
between each one.
5. Transfer to the oven and bake for
40 minutes. Once cooked, remove
from the oven and leave on the
baking trays to cool completely.
6. To make the filling, add the double
cream and gin to a large mixing
bowl and whisk until the cream is
just thick and holding its shape.
7. Add the raspberries and icing
sugar to a bowl and use a fork to
mash them together, then add the
raspberries to the whipped cream
and fold through. When you’re
ready to serve, take a meringue kiss
and spread 1 heaped tsp of filling
on to the flat end, then gently press
another meringue kiss on the end.
8. Repeat with the remaining kisses
and serve immediately. 101

MON CHERI COCKTAIL
Makes 2 Takes 5-10 minutes
INGREDIENTS
• 4 small strawberries, rinsed,
hulled and halved
• Granulated sugar, for dipping
• 4 maraschino cherries, halved,
plus extra to garnish
• 2 tsp maraschino cherry syrup
• 100ml/4fl oz Eden Mill Love Gin
• Ice cubes
• 200ml/7fl oz lemonade
1. Wet half of the rim of each of 2

glasses with a halved strawberry,
then dip in the sugar to coat.
2. Add the remaining strawberries
and the cherries to a jug, add the
cherry syrup and muddle.
3. Add the gin and a handful of ice
cubes. Stir with a bar spoon,
bringing the muddled fruit up to the
top. Top with lemonade and serve
shared between the sugar-rimmed
glasses, each drink garnished with a
maraschino cherry.

These recipes employ Love Gin – a
hibiscus-infused pink gin – from
Eden Mill. The distillery was
established in 2012 on the banks of
the Eden Estuary in St Andrews,
where brewing and distilling were
once integral, and was the first
distillery to make spirits in the
region for more than 150 years.

single malts and gins crafted using

BOOZY RASPBERRY PANNA COTTA
Makes 2 Takes 25-30 minutes, plus 6 hours (or overnight) chilling
Serve these fruity melt-in-the mouth
desserts with a Hot Pink cocktail.

INGREDIENTS
• 160g/5½oz fresh raspberries,
plus extra to garnish
• 50ml/2fl oz Eden Mill Love Gin
• 2½ gelatine leaves
• 200ml/7fl oz double cream
• 75ml/3fl oz milk
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• 5 tbsp caster sugar
• Edible heart-shaped sprinkles
(optional)
For the raspberry sauce
• 100g/4oz fresh raspberries
• 25ml/1fl oz Eden Mill Love Gin
• 3 tbsp icing sugar
1. Add the raspberries and gin to
a blender and blitz until smooth.
Strain the pureed raspberries
through a fine sieve to remove the
seeds, then set aside.
2. Meanwhile, add the gelatine
leaves to a bowl of cold water
to soak.
3. Place the double cream, milk,
vanilla extract and caster sugar
in a small saucepan over a low
heat. Bring the mixture to just
under a simmer, stirring all the

and doesn’t seem grainy.
4. Take the pan off the heat.
Squeeze the gelatine leaves to
remove any excess water, then add
the gelatine and sieved raspberry
puree to the pan and stir until the
gelatine dissolves and the mixture
is light pink with no streaks.
5. Pour the mixture into 2 large
ramekins and set aside to cool down
slightly, then transfer to the fridge to
chill for 6 hours or overnight.
6. To make the raspberry sauce,
add the raspberries and gin to a
blender and blitz until smooth. Add
the icing sugar and blitz again.
Strain the raspberry sauce
through a sieve to remove the
seeds, then pour the sauce into
an airtight container and chill.
7. When ready to serve, fill a bowl
halfway with boiling water and
lower the ramekins into the bowl.
8. Leave for 20 seconds, then
remove and run a knife around
the top edge of each ramekin
before turning out the panna cotta
onto a plate. Top with the chilled
raspberry sauce, a few fresh
raspberries and heart-shaped
sprinkles, if using, then serve. 103

emma Atkinson has always danced to the

beat of her own drum. Never one to bow to
the pressure to put her “perfect” self on
social media or “snap back” after having
children, the actress and radio presenter has
made a point of being refreshingly honest.
And now the 39-year-old, who shares daughter Mia, four,
and son Thiago, six months, with her fiancé, Strictly Come
Dancing star Gorka Márquez, wants to spread the message
that it’s okay to be different. To that end, she has written a
children’s book called Dogs Don’t Dance, which encourages

young readers to find their own way in the world.
Talking exclusively to hello!,
Gemma reveals she was inspired
by her childrens’ personalities.
“Mia and Thiago may be
brother and sister, but they’re
different,” she says. “I wanted to
write a story saying that you can
be different and it doesn’t
matter. It’s about encouraging
children to try new things.”
She has adopted that attitude
when it comes to parenting,
citing her experiences on Strictly
– where she met professional
dancer Gorka, 33 – in 2017.
Dogs Don’t’t Dance tells the tale
of two pooches, one of whom
likes dancing, much to the
dismay of his fellow canines.
‘My daughter Mia is Gemma’s words, illustrated by

“With films, there’s a start and end date, so you can make it
work logistically,” she says. “That’s now the priority – making
sure I can do the job but also be around for the children.”
Gorka, too, is charting new territory this year, having just
signed up to be a judge on Bailando con las estrellas
ellas – the
Spanish version of Strictly. And Gemma couldn’t be prouder.
“I think he will be fabulous. They’ve asked him to do it a few
times, and this time, he felt as though he was ready,” she says.
Regular gym-goer Gemma fits in exercise around her
children’s schedules, but was determined not to bow to any
pressure after her pregnancies. “If you lose weight too quickly,
you get shamed for setting a bad example,” she says. “And if
you lose it too slowly, you get shamed for being lazy. There’s
no right or wrong: everyone’s body responds differently.”
It’s that refreshing honesty that has made her so popular
online, with nearly two million followers on Instagram.
“There’s always a tendency to think I should put make-up
on or at least wash my hair, but I often haven’t got time. So
if people like it, fine, and if they don’t, that’s fine,” she says.
“By being yourself, the right people will surround you –
and if they don’t support you, they’re not your people.”
