41. Summarize the attempts of Diocletian and Constantine to stave off the collapse of the empire. What may
have been their most effective policies? Which had negative effects?
Ans: Essays should show a grasp of the various measures taken in administration, the military, and the
economy. Evaluations will vary but should be backed up by examples. Particularly important is an
appreciation of the long-term effects of increased governmental penetration of society.
42. Discuss the loss of Roman control of the West and the rise of Germanic kingdoms. What were some of the
characteristics of the main groups mentioned in the chapter, such as the Germans and the Huns? What was
unique about the Franks? How were the Romans responsible for the changes that took place?
Ans: Look for a simple account of the chaotic migrations into the empire, administrative problems, and the
establishment of new kingdoms. Contrasts among them include the agriculturalism of the Germans and the
nomadic character of the Huns. The Franks were the only major German group to become Catholic and
thus became champions of Romanism and Catholicism against the Arian tribes.
43. Summarize the main features of the reign of Justinian and Theodora.
Ans: Essays should include as a minimum the attempt to reunite the empire, the compilation of the
Justinian Code, and the building of Hagia Sophia.
44. Discuss the process by which both free farmers and slaves tended to become coloni in the late empire.
Ans: The significance of this development is that it was an integral part of medieval
manorialism/feudalism, so make sure that students grasp the concept now. During the late empire, the rents
of the coloni (future serfs) could still be paid in money; in early medieval times, they were almost always
paid in crop shares.
45. Summarize the development of the Christian church in Late Antiquity with reference to institutional
structure and authority, the development of a scriptural canon, the standardization of doctrines, and the
position of the church in society.
Ans: Students should show an appreciation of the evolving nature of Christianity and its unique position in
a declining civilization. The stronger answers will provide accurate explanations of doctrinal disputes.
46. Discuss the effects of Christianity on the status and lives of women in Late Antiquity.
Ans: Answers should include the “democracy of sin,” the call for virginity and celibacy, the new role
models, such as Mary the Mother of God, and new (but temporary) functions in the church.
47. How does the pontificate of Pope Saint Gregory I, “the Great,” illustrate the position of the papacy in the
late sixth century? Why do you think he is called “the Great”?
Ans: Essays should focus on the measures he took to compensate for the deficiencies of the Roman
administration, as well as his holiness and diplomacy. They should also make a comment towards the
future, with Gregory’s evangelization of Britain.
48. Survey the development of monasticism in the late Roman Empire. How did its eastern and western forms
differ?
Ans: Students should explain what monasticism means, who began it and where, and its attraction for many
Christians. They should be able to detail major differences in practices, with mention of the harshness of
much Eastern asceticism and the moderation of Benedict.
49. Survey the great Christian writers of Late Antiquity, including the contributions of Saint Jerome, Saint
Ambrose, Saint Augustine, and Cassiodorus.
Ans: Other figures than those mentioned could be discussed if the students happen to know about them. By
necessity the answers will likely concentrate on Saint Augustine. There should be some consideration of the
relation between Christian and pagan culture.
50. Demonstrate how Late Antiquity was a transition from Greco-Roman civilization to the Middle Ages.
Ans: A comprehensive survey is required, although some students may write insightful essays stressing only
some of the wider trends. This should include the elaboration of the Catholic Church, the rise of
Constantinople, and the incorporation of barbarian groups.
51. This era is marked by confrontations between the papacy and the various emperors. How is this shown using
Pope Gelasius and Emperor Anastasius?
Ans: Students should reference the letter Pope Gelasius wrote to Emperor Anastasius claiming that the
world was governed by a king’s “power” by the “authority” of the church. They should mention that
Gelasius felt that most cases were clean and distinct, but when not, the church has precedence; and the
king’s concern was with mortal souls, while the pope’s was with the immortal souls. This pope was
emphasizing the power and elevation of the church. Although popes could say and write all they wanted,
they (the church) had very few ways to enforce. This incident and letter symbolizes the growing alienation
of kings and especially the East and the pope.
52. Using the examples given in this chapter, discuss the art and architecture of the time, and the role it played
in the development of the early Christian church. Use specific examples to illustrate your points.
Ans: Good answers will mention the Ravenna Mosaics, as well as Hagia Sophia. The answers should
include discussion of how the religion itself shaped the art and how in turn the religion was used by the
rulers to cement their importance. They might also mention how Christianity employed art in ways that
were not employed by the other Monotheistic religions.
