Peter, strategy analyst of Deloitte, is proposing to Sam (Project director of Hindustan Zinc limited
(HZL)) for a Fertilizer project of 0.50 MTPA to support in utilizing the captive Sulphuric acid from
smelters of Hindustan Zinc limited (HZL). HZL is one of the world’s largest and India’s only
integrated Zinc-Lead-Silver producer. HZL production capacity today stands at 1.2
million tonne per annum. However, a major byproduct of Zinc smelter is Sulphuric acid
(H2SO4) whose production is 1.4 million ton from zinc smelter. HZL always struggle to
dispose/sell HZ2SO4 in market and sometimes smelters need to be shut down due to
accumulation of acid which is huge loss for a company (~92 Cr). Sulphuric acid is itself
Hazardous as it is highly concentrated and difficult to handle. Sulphuric acid is a key raw
material for Fertilizers and could be utilised to enhance business profits.

New Fertilizer business will eliminate the shutdown risk due to sulphuric acid and will
also help to Rajasthan Farmers to get Fertilisers in low prices as it will be a Rajasthan’s
First fertilizer plant and they could save huge transportation cost. Indian Market is also
supportive for Fertilizer business as currently 50% fertilizer is imported which is a huge
burden of cost for Farmers. HZL can easily grab the near vicinity market and ensure the
business growth.

The proposed project shall further strengthen HZL commitments on CSR investment for
overall upliftment of socio-economic index of the communities around the project site by
way of financial and administrative support. The project will open large employment
opportunities, directly and indirectly. There shall be opportunities for entrepreneurs to
engage in many service sectors directly or indirectly associated with the project.
